I've got five theories about why the ending is so bad, from most likely to least likely.
1: Bioware ran out of time and had to rush it.
This
seems most likely as other aspects of the game also feel unfinished.
Maybe another time they could have asked EA for a delay, but they were
no doubt under a great deal of pressure to deliver on schedule after the
DA2 disaster and TOR's troubled launch.
2: They got lazy or just ran out of inspiration.
I wouldn't rule this out. They haven't written anything unique or special for a while now.
3: They're withholding the "true"ending for an epilogue DLC.
EA are so shamelessly capitalistic that I wouldn't rule this out either. It would herald a new low in videogame marketing.
4: It's a middle finger to their fans.
Fans
have rightly been critical of Bioware of late, and Bioware have shown
that they can often be bitter and childish when it comes to criticism.
They censor criticism on their forums, and stoop to trolls' levels by
resorting to name-calling on Twitter. So they put this out because they
genuinely don't care about their fanbase any longer. Unlikely, but I
don't think it's impossible.
5: The head writers committed deliberate franchisicide.
Maybe
the higher-ups are just as disappointed with the direction that the
series has gone in as some fans are. Maybe they're sick of being reduced
to gears in EA's money factory. Maybe they wanted an ending that would
put this franchise in its grave so EA couldn't pervert it any further.
This is almost impossible, but I like to think Bioware hasn't lost their
soul entirely.
