I honestly think so. Up until the little white platform started to carry shepard away, that was the greatest gaming experience I've ever had, no question. ME1 was love at first sight, ME2 was the world's greatest second date, but ME3 surpassed them both for me up until the last 10 minutes.
so, if you can black out the ending for a moment, how would you rank ME3 in the trilogy?
If you IGNORE THE ENDING, is ME3 the best game in the series?

Likely the best game I've played in a long, long time.
Just turn the game off when it's you and Anderson left on the Citadel at the end. The game teleports you back to pre-Cerberus assault mission anyway so what's the difference?
Use your imagination for the rest.

No, I don't think so. As far as action goes, it's better, but I prefer ME1 for the customization options it presents. My preference, anyway.

Definitely. Excellent character interactions, very powerful moments, huge stakes, better gameplay and for the most part, it combines the best aspects of ME1 and ME2. It's lighter on dialogue options than I would have liked, but that doesn't bring it down all that much in my book.

Yep. If there was a way to get rid of the last 5 minutes it would be the best one

It was so terrific. I am sort-of content with the ending, but I can say pretty confidently that I may not have to play a video for the rest of my life.

Yes. But that's reflective of how bad the ending is.

For me it was definitely the best game in the series without the ending. Lots of great moments, loved the final squad...really came to love EDI and her sense of humor. Loved the varying looks for in the Normandy. I absolutely was joygasmic how my romance played out. I would say this or 1 are my faves. And that isn't a knock against 2 because it really expanded on other species and the universe very well.

No. ME1 is much better in story-telling. ME3 is better in action, not the story

Yes, if Bioware ignores us (which they likely will) my advice is to just get up and go do something for like ten-fifteen minutes after you make your 'choice'.

Yep, without the endings it's -by far- the best game of the series.

Everything up until the end was really, really enjoyable for me. Honestly, it was what kept convincing me the ending couldn't be *that* bad.
Memorable, powerful, and emotional moments, stunning dialogue at times, and pretty fluid gameplay (combat's a bit fast for me, but I don't play many shooters). Soundtrack was gorgeous, and Jennifer Hale deserves every bit of praise (and hopefully awards) she gets from her performance.
I can't think of any other game, short of Aeris's death in FF7, that has generated this level of an emotional response from me. I actually liked the blending of elements from 1 & 2 with the exception of the amazingly unhelpful Journal.
And then it was all stripped away in the last few minutes.
In terms of endings, 2 (which I consider the most rewarding ending to a game I've ever played) -> 1 - > multiple root canals in one sitting -> 3.

I mean I liked the rest of it but I just don't really like how they dropped so many sub plots they set up in the other 2, I mean what was the point of the cipher, thorian, dark energy and the reapers wanting Shepard's body? And TIM being indoctrinated, ugh I didn't think they would take such a predictable route I totally get why all the Cerberus loyalists were pissed that was poorly handled.

Even without the ending I prefer 2 over 3. I thought the story and definitely the characters were better in 2.

Yes. And it's good enough that I might just play through again and just close out ME3 after I kill TIM and activate the Citadel.

hmmm, deciding whether it was better than 1 my be impossible for me. It was love at first sight, but ME2 to this day is still one my most hated games of all time.
If the ending was better, i might actualy be able to say it was better than 1. But it all comes down to feeling, and the ending did give me a ugly horrible feeling.... so i cant really say its better then the masterpiece that is Mass Effect 1 can I? That game only left me with an amazing feeling

Even with the ending it's still the best game I've ever played. Those last 5 minutes will not ruin what was an incredible journey for me.

Without a doubt. ME3 (sans ending) is one of the best games ever. I've never played a game so emotionally engaging.

As a stand alone, no.
I believe you at least need to have played Mass Effet 2 to truly appreciate the beauty of Mass Effect 3, and I do believe it's a beauty. I definitely preferred the cutscenes and the voice acting in this game, but Mass Effect 2 had all that character development that makes it one of the best.
It's a tough choice, but ignoring the ending, I still think Mass Effect 2 had a better final assault. I mean, look at all the CHOICES you had. You had to think outside the box if you wanted all of your squad to come back alive, and their death cutscenes were enough to make you a little teary eyed.
Loved the story in 3, but overall, I think the 2nd game is just a "bit" better.
BUT, if we're talking about LI's... 3 takes the cake. lol

If it wasn't for the catalyst/endings and the vast amount of auto-dialogue, then yes. But those things cannot be forgotten.
