So it is clear that many people are deeply unhappy with the mass effect ending, some are unhappy with a great many other things, but lets focus on the ending. Considering everything that happened in 1&2 how would you wrap up mass effect 3.
The rules, you are not allowed to rewrite the whole game, we are talking the last scene only. Yes them being able to build the catalyst in 2 weeks during a giant interstellar war is stupid...but hey. For those of you with super long posts include a summary.
My thoughts, the grand reveal is that the mass effect relays and the citadel were not constructed by the reapers but the reapers creators. The Catalyst inside the citadel remains the long dormant A.I of the race that created the reapers. It is explained that the repears were created long ago but in a singularity event determined that organic life was a threat to them and hence began their cycle of purges including their creators.
Instead of creating the reapers for this purpose the creator made this A.I in their dying days to try and save future organic races. The reapers themselves allowing civilization to flourish as despite their brilliance they find themselves unable to innovate in the way organics do and thus every 50k years they take whatever advances were made and incorporate them into themselves before hitting the reset before the species in power can become a threat. Thus the reapers needed to keep the mass effect relays in place so technology would develop along a path that would remain useful to them. Thus they could not simply destroy the citadel and the catalyst.
Thus in M.E 1 when they were stopped from overrunning the citadel they were unable to shut off the catalyst, making sure that Sheppard had access to it today.
The catalyst though says that despite all this the reapers are far more advanced today than they were in his day and that even with his aid chances for success are limited. He then offers several options
destruction: He can send out a pulse that will scramble the mental processes of the reapers giving the alliance a huge tactical edge...depending on the war readyness this would lead to complete failure..the reapers win, failure at a cost:sheppard dies and the sol system is incerated in the nuclear/mass effect armageddon battle, or complete success...sol system is ravaged shep lives and a badly crippled alliance can hobble back together and the reapers flee for the first time ever...but victory is not complete, they will rebuild and return...who knows when.
Detonate the citadel: This renegade option allows the catalyst to override all the mass effect fields in the citadel making it generate a pulse that will wipe out all life in the sol system...but garauntee the reapers never return. The ultimate sacrifice is made by humanity and the few humans left on colonies become the ultimate heroes of the alliance space, making the ultimate sacrifice of their homeworld to save the galaxy.
Control the reapers: The reapers are enslaved much like tims plan..however it only works on a small portion of the reapers, before they realize what is going on and alter their codes to prevent being "indoctrinated". The ensuing battle rages and depending on the war readyness the Alliance with their new reaper allies lose or win, and the collateral damage changes. Sheppard also depending on his paragon/renegade rating isnt killed but is affected by this melding of the minds with the reapers. If he isnt ferverant enough in his belief he will die...or if he lives he remains barely in control of this genocidal army of killing machines...
After the last scene and losses for Readyness, you cut to each squadmate and their fate.
anyway, not brilliant but my idea trying to stay in theme of what mass effect was and what the writers wrote for ME3.

I just expanded on the shepard lives ending. It is pretty simple.
Do to overcrouding Shep takes a colony ship out to the nearest habitable system and winds up landing on the same planet the normady did. When he touches down he meets ______insert LI name here, and they have lots of babies. The end

Release an Expansion like dragon age:awakening, call it Mass Effect: Awakening. Shows the ME3 ending as you picked it then you wake up in the Normandy SR1 with ashley telling the doc you are waking up after having a "Vision" and you continue your journey to stop Saren.
I'm not sure what kind of ending I would like. More closure I would say, the ending didn't really answer all the questions, but maybe that is what they are planning with potential expansions or dlc etc.

Wipe the original endings from your mind, and experience this instead. The ending should be as "HOLY SH** EPIC" as the mother of all Thresher Maws eating the Reaper.

First off, during the actual battle scenes, if you saved the Rachni, you are treated to swarms of Rachni soldiers overwhelming a screaming Reaper on the ground, covering it like ants; if you saved the Geth, you get to see Geth flyers and ground troops destroying husks and a Reaper Destroyer.
Finally, your Shepard struggles to the top of the Citadel. The God-Child explains that he is an ancient AI created to protect organics from being permanently wiped out by their created synthetics, and that the Reapers are his tool. He still seems fairly emotionless, but does explain that he took the form of Shepard's "regret and loss, because that is my existence." Shepard is given the choice to Control or Destroy the Reapers, or to use Synthesis: combine all organic & synthetic life to forever end the cycle. He/she is told all of the following:
All three choices will make the Mass Relays non-functional, but they won't explode (this would, after all, destroy all of the planets nearby). If he/she chooses to Control the Reapers, the Relays can be rebuilt by the Reapers in weeks. If he/she chooses Synthesis, the same happens; the Reapers will be asked by the AI God-Child to rebuild the Relays, and then leave to pursue their own destinies. If the Reapers are flat-out destroyed, the Relays will take decades to rebuild, and many of the Quarians and Turians will die of starvation before they can take the Relays home. The Geth and EDI will also die. Synthesis and Control endings will both end in Shepard's death.
Shepard may obey and choose one of the previous 3, or may rebel instead, and refuse all three choices offered him/her, if full Paragon (this is wrong) or Renegade (we don't need you). Depending on War Assets (success requires a max readiness score and Geth help), a rebellion means that either the Reapers are destroyed without the Relays or Geth being damaged, or they are victorious and finish the cycle.
Shepard makes a choice and collapses or burns in the green laser, or if he/she rebels, turns and points out at the fleet and makes a speech to the god-child about how synthetics and organics are already working together, and that the god-child AI isn't a catalyst at all, but that the catalyst for victory is rather the spirit of humanity, which Shepard then declares is the spirit of life, and determination, and is in all things--even the Geth (if they were saved). He/she finishes the speech with "THIS ENDS NOW." Then he/she collapses from his or her wounds.

For a Control choice, the Reaper ships are seen flying into the distant sun, and the pinpricks of light as they explode fade into white. This ending builds up more and more suspense as to what happened to your Shepard and his or her crew. The black or white then fades into a Secondary Ending.
Primary Ending 2 (chose Rebellion w/o enough War Assets):
We see the Reapers swarming over everything, to the tune of that sad dream music. The races you saved in your gameplay fall one by one in cinematic fashion, your crew is shown dying in epic last stands, your love interest (if any & if alive) is shown kneeling atop the Citadel, a shuttle behind them, holding your unconscious hand as an explosion hits, and then the Reapers are shown moving off toward the Relays and using them to leave, leaving cold, dead, dark planets behind. This zooms down onto the top of the Citadel. Shepard (and the love interest, if they arrived) is shown lying dead, and the little boy AI is shown standing over him/her/them, and says aloud "They came farther than any before. The cycles are nearly over." This then fades into Secondary Ending 2.

Then, depending on your choices throughout the first two games, the previous ending choice fades into one of the following Secondary Endings:

The shadowy figures close in, and then after a few moments the child turns into white light which sweeps over the landscape, changing it into the strange eden world of the current endings. The figures flash and become all of Shepard's dead friends, smiling and welcoming him/her. The Normandy lands at the edge of the trees, and the hatch opens; Shepard's crew emerges, also smiling, and the love interest, now dead even if not previously, greets Shepard with an embrace. (This is obviously an afterlife; Shepard is dead.)
Secondary Ending 2 (chose Destroy, or Rebellion w/ enough War Assets):
Shepard walks into the dark dream-forest, the child in the distance standing facing him/her. The shadowy figures close in, and then the child glows white, and the brightness sweeps over the landscape, changing it into the strange eden of the current endings. The figures flash and become all of Shepard's dead friends, clapping, smiling and thanking him/her. If Wrex is dead and you didn't cure the Genophage, he is standing a distance away and does not approach. If there was a love interest & they're dead, or another team member if not, they embrace Shepard and say something motivational, such as "Thank you. For everything." This fades into a sky, with a sun overhead breaking free of clouds; Shepard's love interest, if they survived (or another crew member if they didn't) is kneeling over him or her, and their voice fades in shouting "Shepard? Shepard!"

The Secondary Ending then either fades into black & credits if you got Primary Ending 2, or back to the Council giving their speech for Primary Ending 1. For Primary Ending 1:
If Shepard survived, the Council speech scene is picked up where it left off, and Shepard triumphantly moves onto the stage, to the cheering of the masses. His or her surviving crew takes up places behind him. This fades into a scene of Shepard either looking at a photo of the dead love interest, or being held against the love interest if they survived, or standing alone if there was no love interest; either way, the camera pans out to show Shepard from behind, looking down at Earth from a ship window, light flooding in around him/her to frame an angelic figure(s).
If Shepard died, the camera instead zooms out from the council to see a decorated coffin beneath their podium, or two if Shepard had a love interest. The speaking council member can be heard saying things along the lines of "pushed on when we did not believe; fought for us all when we would not fight; aimed for peace when we wanted only war" (for Paragon, for Renegade, "aimed for victory when faced with only defeat."). Any surviving crew files along in a line to lay flowers and so forth onto the coffin, and this fades to credits, while the voice of the speaking council member fades out with proud words, something along the lines of "And his (or her) sacrifice will never be forgotten."
Credits roll, and only the main menu comes after (no DLC text; no creepy Grandpa).

Even if you removed the Rebellion option, you'd still have a much better-fleshed-out ending IMO, but with the same options & consequences in the long run. Nothing would be changed; it would just be elaborated upon & much more satisfying, like eating a big piece of cake instead of being handed an unrecognizable crumb. Maybe it's a very thought-provoking crumb, but I'd still rather have the damn cake after baking it for this long.

mine involves shep sitting on a porch out in the middle of no where up on some moutain with about a half dozen little blue children running all over the place and she's napping maybe in a lawn chair, laying back tanning or something with a book over her face, the kids are playing with the all medals they gave shep, making up stories about fighting reapers and **** and liara is sitting inside infront of a wall of computers screens.
In every play through until they fix the endings, i am just going to stop playing after the crucible connects with the catalyst and come up with what ever suits me.
I'd also like to see some "where are they now" rolling after the lil scene with the my sheps kids for all squad mates and important crew members, maybe even important non crew

Permit my self indulgence but this is my imagined rewrite of Mass Effect 3 ending. Shep makes it to Citadel and "dies". Skip the "Choices" scene. Reapers co-opt his body and he is synthetic and becomes avatar for Harbinger. Key loyal characters have to quickly choose to capitulate, fight conventionally on and face eventual annihilation and/ or accept another option realized by Liara and the (DLC character) that the relays and the Citadel must be destroyed to stop the reapers. This deliberate decision throws sentient progress back but it was "borrowed and not earned" to begin with. Governing bodies condemn the loyal survivors as "Crazy" and they have to go about convincing factions that the relays need to be destroyed. Players decisions are respected in presence of loyal survivors and alliances. Surviving characters could set out to destroy the relays and citadel themselves or successfully convince Galaxy forces to do so. Galaxy forces beat a retreat to their own space, earth is sacrificed. They could have a bit of time to decide on self-imposed isolation or risk consequences of being the wrong part of space when the balloon goes up. Pay off is in ending of in relationships with surviving characters saying good bye and sending Shep to a glorious rest.
