I am still confused as to why, if the catalyst is the citadel, it didn't just simply open up the citadel's link to dark space and let in the reapers in the first game? Why did the reapers need Saren to do this, if they already control (sort of) the citadel?
What is the Catalyst? AI? I think not!

I'm guessing its because the Crucible was the trigger that activated the Catalyst. The Catalyst was always there dormant within the Citadel. It just couldn't be activated until the Crucible was completed. Javik mentioned that the Crucible wasn't the Protheans creation, they merely found incomplete plans just as this cycle did. The Catalyst even mentions that each Cycle added to the Crucible. It just wasn't until this cycle that the Crucible was finally completed

I thought it was space jesus at first or something. That made me unhappy.
Then someone suggested it was an AI so I was like OK I can...wait, no, it's just slightly less worse.
