All throughout the game, I expected that at some point I would go back to Palaven and help the Turians against the Reapers. I ran all around the galaxy trying to get support for the planet, so I would have expected to liberate Palaven before or after the battle on Earth. I really dont understand why right after killing Kai Leng, we have no choice but to go to Earth and fight the Reapers. There is so much to do before that.
I understand that Earth is a priority for Shepard, since he or she is human. I would even understand that after we killed the Reapers in a better ending, we would go to  Palaven, Thessia, Sur'kesh and maybe even Khar'shan if the Batarians survived. I expected the game to keep going for at least 60 hours, like the previous two games. I finished ME3 in 37, completing every mission and exploring every planet I found.
Saving the homeworlds would have given us more substance to the universe and extended the gameplay to an acceptable length, which we have grown to expect from Bioware. Saving the homeworlds would have let us see what Palaven ACTUALLY looked like, besides the bunkers and outposts of its moon and the fires we see on the planet itself. We would see Salarian culture, architecture and military. I would have loved to explore Thessia with Liara as well. It would have been great to see how the Batarians actually lived, without all the propaganda, lies and exaggerations.
I also expected that we would raid Omega and give it back to Aria, since the she told Shepard about the raid and how she was going to rip Cerberus a new one. Raiding Omega seemed like something Shepard would have done, since we have been there before and it was a major hub world.
Right now, the game does not let us do any of this, because we are locked into the ending when we launch the attack on the base, and the ending does not allow for a continuation of the story as we want it.

Also, I would rather that these things were not added as paid DLC. I would really dislike it if Omega was added as a DLC, which I feel it will. The already brief game and abrupt ending almost broke my metaphorical nose when I walked into it. Charging more to add to the game which should have been longer would make Bioware and EA cash out on  their respect and reputation, gaining short-term profits while losing long-term relationships and fans.

I was thinking the same thing as you, like how we would go to Palavan and the other home worlds, except Thessia since they said that it was pretty much lost. I also thought that we were going to do another mission or Aria, or at least go to Omega at some point but all in all I feel like it was a great game and the only thing that bothers me about the game is the ending

I personally am not done yet but it's been every bit as long as ME2 so far.

There isnt much to do after you get the Sanctuary mission. That leads you right to the Cerberus base and then to the ending. What part are you at?

Pretty sure I got a codex entry at some point about the "Miracle on Palavan", about how combined forces ended up pushing the Reapers back? Or at the very least, about how things turned around to some extent. I know it's not the same as experiencing it, but it's some closure, at least.

Just about to meet up with the Asari Councilor, which I assume brings it into the third act. 28 hours so far.

Yeah then you do a mission on Thessia, fail, Specialist Trayner suggests going to Sanctuary, and after that you find TIM and attack his base. Then the ending. You have 25% of the game to go.

@Der Estr Bune: The entire universe is destroyed because everyone is part machine and part organic. The story from that point will drastically change because everyone is probably indestructible/immortal and their behaviors might change accordingly.

So that averages out to about 36 hours for the whole game, which is an hour longer than ME2.

Remember, ME2 has a lot lot of DLC content.

40 hours was my max for ME2, that was 100% on insanity.

I'm on 28 with the story and I'm at Thessia on this second run. Not trying to go fast too.

I was just offering an explanation for why you didn't get/bother to go back to Palavan: it is already under control.
