But you should remember what Thane thought of him lol, he thought that guy was ambarassing for an assassin, being momentarily beaten by a near dying Drell. I agreed and I let Leng know about it clearly enough.

That fight should have been a real loss, Kai Leng truly beating Shepard, and honestly, he should have murdered someone in front of Shepard's eyes.
That would be the first time Shepard had seen, face to face (at least if you're a paragon do-gooder), someone die because he wasn't good enough. That would have been gripping, and it would have made a whole lot more sense than the random emo-rage he goes into as it is. Sure he doesn't get the VI. That doesn't change *anything* about Thessia's situation. At most it costs them what, a day? a week? Earth has been under siege for months by now, and he's gonna rage about the blues gettin it for a week?
Shepard should have lost someone there. Whether its Liara, or another Choose-Your-Own-Sacrifice event like Kaiden/Ashley, someone should have died there, in front of his eyes. As it is Kai Leng is a little pansy **** who wins against a dying Drell (doesn't even kill him fully, just wounds him enough so he can run his ass away, probably not even a mortal wound had Thane not already been on the verge of death), and wins against Sheperd because Cerberus has a freaking airship on scene.

I just think he's one of the worst fake-tough guys ever written in a story. He brings in help every freaking time we fight him. He's just a wimp who can move fast and recharge his shields.

he can't take us 1v3, he sucks lol

In a certain leak, he was going to straight-up murder one of your squadmates on Thessia while Shepard bled out on the floor.

They could have done so much more with him. Poor Troy 'Greedling' Baker got underutilized.

He only beat Shepard on Thessia cos he can't fight his own battles and had to use a gun ship, that gloating email he sends after you're back on the normandy just makes me shake my head.

@Beast - originally I read somewhere that Kai leng was supposed to do something to your squadmates that makes you have to choose between saving one or the other. That didn't make it in game though.

That would have been particularly hard for me if it was between Liara and someone else since Liara is my Shep's LI.

I think I would have cared more if he had been some character who came up through 1 and 2. Not even as a nemesis, but just a character in the universe that I got to see develop in some way. As it is, I was happy to see him die because the Thessia mission was some obnoxious stuff (unbeatable bosses will always be bad ideas, writers), but I didn't really care much.
Crap, if ME3 wasn't so closed off, I would have loved to have seen your idea worked on a little more.
I personally would have loved Kai Lang as an actual part of the Normandy 1 crew that had a conflict with Shepherd's moralty (whatever it might have been) only to later leave the Alliance with a dishonorable discharge and find what exactly he was looking for in the biomechanical manipulations of Cerberus.
That would have given a far more satisfying struggle for Shepherd when he confronted him again.

It would have been...ugly for me. Liara wasn't my LI, but Tali was...and they were both there. Either way would have been horrid. And thats why it should have been done if they wanted a moment to crush Shepard's determination. Simply having the floor shot out from under you by a gunship is not compelling. Especially when practically nothing changes because of it.
