From what I gather, everone expected Kai Leng to be an awesome assassin. But even in ME: Retribution, he wasn't skilled as Shepard. Anderson managed to get the better of him.

Besides his real power lies in his lies, his ability to deceive people and of course trolling. That was the case in the books, and that was the case in ME3. True he was very skilled, but Thane giving him a hard time wasn't a surprise because Thane was the best Assassin out there and he would have beaten him if he wasn't sick.

And in Thessia, he didn't beat Shepard in fight, but thats not what counts, he was able to get the VI from Shepard and he planned that gunship being there, that gunship helping him was his plan and Shepard should have been prepared for every suprise. Shepard knew that. He doesn't complain that Kai Leng is better than him, he complains that he was suprised by his attack.

In Cerberus base, Kai Leng needs those guys to even the things because Shepard isn't alone and every one of his squadmates worth at least 5 Cerberus troopers. And in the final scene where you stab him Bioware shows who is the boss.

But I think his part in the leaked script was better. Him tricking the VS (Not Udina), that epic fight in the monastery with those windows blowing up. And Kai Leng can actually defeat Shepard. It was well written.

I liked Leng in the books. I was excited to see his character in-game.

Then I saw him in game. He was entirely unremarkable. He never even killed anybody on-screen in my playthrough. He caught Miranda completely by surprise-- had her on her back-- and she escaped with a cut on her face. In the boss battles, I'd drain his shield while he talked smack and never touched me. Then continue to talk smack, and tell me how I didn't live up to his expectations. Oh, the irony.

Then again, I was also very disappointed in Thane. An assassin of his caliber should know that the ol' "point the gun to the head" route is not the way to go. He ruined his moment of surprise by stopping and looking badass instead of swiftly snapping the guy's neck. Or, you know, just pulling the trigger instead of holding it there. Looking badass.

Both assassins should be ashamed of themselves.

nice post above ^

i also believe that kai leng was well written. I do , however, think he needed to kill (or horribly injure) liara on thessia. What powerfully compelling story telling that would be.

I too was pretty disappointed with Kai Leng. He was fairly badass in the books, and I figured TIM was going to turbo-charge him into something really epic. Instead he's just a dancing idiot. He's not even the toughest space ninja in Cerberus, the Phantoms are way more dangerous than him. Pretty embarrasing when your group's mooks are harder than your major boss.

I mean, jeez...I walloped him so bad he couldn't even finish his taunts before he had to run away and recharge his shields :/

what pissed me off is that I hate artificial boss battle's if I am able to shoot him and get his shields down I should be able to kill him, and not be stopped by him just standing there taking .50 mg rounds to the face from my black widow without so much as flinching and then calling in cannon fodder or a bloody gunship which in mass effect 2 we took down multiple times, so its just another one of those "lol we'll let you fight him but because of the magic of cut scenes there is no way you can win"

I thought Shep was pissed because all the people who died to get her to that temple (gunship pilots, soldiers on the bridge...) did so in vain.
