Its seems semi-audio related, as there has been some conversation going (cutscene or various npcs) when my machine locks up, though that might just be coincidence... as there's almost always someone talking  XD

No video glitches though, the screen just freezes where its at and the audio jitters on the same note or goes silent. Most of the time i cant ctrl-alt-del, or anything... sometimes i get lucky and it will let me alt tab out and it seems to recover after 5-10 seconds. Usually i'll have to force a reboot for my whole system though  :/

I did manage to catch a Nvidia driver failure during one of the recoverable hiccups, though that was before i updated to the latest driver (i was on v290 i believe)

Possibly related... during cutscenes i do get some odd white circle/spots popping around the shadows (i think) its usually around a characters ears and under their chin. Very brief though and kinda funny... looks like theyre sparkling

(probably not useful, but for reference, i have been playing Kingdom of Amalur, SWTOR, BF3 and other recent games for hours on end without problems)

Here's a chunk of my dxdiag:

Same problem with XP
AMD Athalon 64 Dual Core 6000+ MMX
3GB DDR RAM
SB Audigy 1
Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT 512MB DDR2

The driver update for my video card has all sorts of ME3 screenshots while its installing, kinda think this might help the problem.

UPDATE:

Updating Video card did help the crashes are more manageable, but they are still happening.

why not try the on-board sound? i think those windows drivers haven't been updated for eons by creative.
plus the quality of the latest realtek/via chipsets are better than any audigy 1/2 chipset can provide nowadays.

the audigy 1/2 are EOL and are no longer supported by creative.

I've been having the same problems, although it happens completely randomly. I have an exceedingly similar configuration too. Except that I have an I7 870@2.98ghz. Same windows, same graphical card, same ram. Same problem, system locks up, sound jitters on the same note, and I'm forced to restart. Every other games I play are fine (Skyrim, league of legends and starcraft 2 mainly). I'm using the latest nvidia drivers too.

Same problem lots of these posts scattered around the forum list.

Despite crashing out every few minutes, I have completed several missions...I am moving forward, just slowly.

Just flash updated my BIOS...maybe that'll get me somewhere new.

I also experience random lockups, then have to alt-tab out and back in to get the game going again. I went to device manager and diabled the four nvidia HD audio devices, and from then on the game has run smoothly. I run win7 64, have a gtx 560 ti and  onboard realtek sound. Dont know if the realtek and nvidia clash somehow, but this has worked for me so far.
