Does the "Destroyer Reaper" HD texture conflict with using "Ships of Reapers HD"? Whenever there are conflicts, my game crashes during the loading so I want to make sure I don't have any overlapping re-textures when using similar files.

They are different.

IMPORTANT:

The MODs created by the user "wadres" are of very good quality, but you should be careful with them, because they are in JPG format, so they are very sensitive to cause the game to crash.

I've changed the format of these MODs and left them in the Skydrive site (link in first page).

If the game is crashing on your PC, check that all files created by the user "wadres", containing the legend "Optimized 2" in the name.

Thank you. I noticed this as well. The Rannoch and Geth Dreadnaught textures always cause trouble for me.

Diffuse maps are different to normal maps. If you look in the game files for each object (most of the time) there should be a texture with the filename: Blahdiblah_Diff, as well as one with BlahdiBlah_Nrm or something.

The diffuse map is the one that looks the most like the end product, whereas the normal is that bluey-purple one. And they do quite different things. I think we might just be arguing about terminology, because they do have a few different names depending on who's talking about them.

Sources: Unreal Developer Network
ModWiki.Net
(If you want to read some more about them)

Sounds like the diffuse map is the orange / green / red texture.

That's the normal, but it depends which program you open it in. Case in point:

Posted Image

The same file opened in 2 different programs, IrfanView on the left, DirectX Texture Tool on the right (it also looks like this in photoshop).

This is the normal map (also called the relief map). The diffuse is the main thing you see on the model:

*Snip* One quick question, sorry if it's been asked before. I recently met Jack again in ME3. Do you guys know if there ever was made any high res text for Jack in ME3 ? And can point me there ? Thank you very much :)

It looks like most chars got a recoded me2 file for ME3, like there is a "Zaeed Default Armor HD Recoded from ME2 for ME3" on the first page. But not one for Jack. Would it be possible to request one for Jack as well ? It's so horrible to meet her in ME3 with low textures. I haven't been able to find a single ME3 Jack high res file anywhere.

I could not find these two on smarteck's skydrive. However they did not cause any crash on my PC.

So I finished the Shepard retextures. There are six versions. Three which are compatible with Smartek's High resolution skin for default Shepard. I've also updated the smoooth skin Shepard I posted earlier

You can see the full project here

Let me know what you guys think of of it or anything I should change

Edit: Screenshots, these are of the darker Sheploo less wrinkles version

Oh my god, this is great! This is exactly what I've been looking for. I've wanted a Sheploo with no wrinkles since the game's release. Thank you so much for doing this.

I have a couple questions. In your project description, you say we can use your reskin along with Smarttek's high res default Shepard face. What's the difference if we use both or just your texture? Also, I just tested out your "no wrinkles" darker hair texture and watched some cutscenes but noticed that his forehead becomes really wrinkled when he talks. Is this just how the face is animated and there's nothing one can do?

I also tried using the following file:

"Normal maps only:
High-res No Wrinkles
http://www.mediafire...kru967x25cccsn6"

I don't know if something got mislabled but the "no wrinkles" file here still had a lot of wrinkles. I didn't like the darker hair version so tried using this but see no difference from an unmodded Sheploo.

you're welcome :)

Yes you can use any of the normal map only versions with Smartek's retexture. Most high resolution textures include both a normal map file and a diffuse file. The normal map edits things like wrinkles or any indents/bumps on the face while the diffuse file edits things like color and shading.
Smatek's version only includes a diffuse file, while the normal map only version of my mod of cource only includes a normal map.
It is not nessecary to use them together but I only recommended to use it with his otherwise Shepard won't appear as high-res.

Unfortunately it is just how the face gets animated in some cutscenes, very sorry about that, I don't think there's anything I can do.

it probably didn't show as much of a difference as the darker hair version since that one doesn't have a diffuse file but I went ahead and took some screenshots to show the difference:

Maybe you could take one of the screenshots and circle the wrinkles you want gone, I'd be happy to do it

How come the normal hair colour no-wrinkles isn't as smooth as the dark hair no wrinkles?

Because I didn't include a diffuse map. I mainly made that version to be compatible with other mods, which was why I didn't add one. Diffuse maps don't affect wrinkles,  just shade them. I don't actually have any comparisons to show that the one version is smoother than the other, I only meant that it could be possible. If there was any difference it would be hardly noticable. I could just make a normal hair colored version of my Darker Shepard mod for you. But you wouldn't be able to use it with Smartek's Shepard retexture then. And I'm not sure it would make a difference on the wrinkles.

They're probably really unoptimized though - and would explain the awful performance hit I got during testing.

Thanks for the update Smarteck, I'll replace the current files with your optimized ones - and check again to see if any of the Rannoch ones are optimized later on Skydrive.

EDIT: Rachni Queen doesn't have an optimized version either.

Jack had an almost complete redesign since ME2. Her ME2 textures are incompatible with her ME3 model. I have all kinds of ideas for the game, such as recoding all their loyalty / secondary outfits for use in ME3, and doing high resolution versions of jack etc. However, I put priority on Shepard's armors, weapons, and squad mates as you see them more frequently. Characters like jack show up very rarely in the actual game all things considered. Jacks texture is also hardly the worst in the game. In terms of what I think needs to be done, it's low on the list.

I'm going to try to fix up the textures in my project some and I will also work on your request DJepic. I'm setting it to private for now, but will have it up soon again.

Also I just saw those N7 armor retextures both the one for squadmates and the new Shepard's version and they look great, thankyou guys

I actually decided to try and optimize those files myself - using the Nvidia plugin in photoshop, I saved the files as .dds and put them back together in Texmod.

Under MIPS maps I selected "generate" since otherwise it refused to save it for not "being a multiple of 4." I looked at the file afterward and don't see a difference in appearance. This appears to have made the actual file larger though as an individual .dds file compared to .jpg. Also, the two files I saved as dds are now the exact same file size, despite being different originally as jpgs.

My file appears to be slightly larger and Smarteck's optimized files were significantly smaller than Wadres' originals.

I'm not sure I did it right, if I could get advice/help that would be great- I'm going to upload a rachni queen file, could someone check for me to see if I optimized it correctly?

Mipmapping will not show up in the actual texture when viewed. You won't see that outside of the actual game.

Should I have it enabled then? And does it sound like I did the process correctly? The file displays correctly but might not be optimized or even worse if I did it incorrectly.

Thanks for your help.

A lot of what you like will depend greatly on trial and error. The way I do normal maps for instance requires different settings than what others might use.

Note:
(Working on Kasa Fabrication Armor set pieces now.)

Yes, is there, is the file called "rachni queen HD v6 fixed".

My mistake .. corrected. New file is called "Rachni Queen OPTIMIZED 2 v6 Fixed". :P

Also added to Skydrive site (Contributions folder):

- tuchanka main krogans hd OPTIMIZED 2

- Rannoch geth capsules and ground textures HD OPTIMIZED 2

The queen doesn't even need mip maps, it's not like she runs around or zooms up on her rocket throne.

I sort of don't understand what they are and was trying to simply optimize someone else's file. Good point though - looking up, it's apparently related to movement.

No big issue,

- if the file has no alpha channel, save in DXT1 (no MIP maps).
- If the file has an alpha channel, save in DXT5 (no MIP maps).

That's it. With the files in those formats the game works much better with the MODs and you prevent the game crash. :D
