I'm a BIG Mass Effect fan (I have played through Mass Effect
1 and 2 with 4 different characters) and I'm an even bigger Bioware fan. For
over a decade I have played so many great games created by Bioware and have
derived countless hours of entertainment from these games. For that Bioware I
owe you a tremendous thank you, but GOD DAMN IT, I'm filled with anger and
utter contempt for them right now after seeing how the Mass Effect Trilogy was
ended. I'm so disgusted that I feel the need to explain my dissatisfaction with
the ending to the game and to the trilogy.

I just completed Mass Effect 3 an hour ago. After seeing the different endings
I feel like I just had my nads kicked and my lunch money taken. I wasn't angry
that no matter what Shepard ends up sacrificing himself (I saw the scene where
he takes a deep breath at the end, was not impressed mostly because I was so
pissed about everything else). Before finishing Mass Effect 3 I absolutely
loved it. The game play was action packed, and the story had me totally
enthralled and emotionally invested. I was so hooked on the game that I
actually stayed home instead of going to work to finish it.  The fact that
I totally adored this game and the series overall made the disappointment and
the anger over the ending so much worse. The ending was so bad that it almost
soured my experience for the entire series and made what was an epic and
amazing game to just good.

First off there should have been bigger differences in the endings. The three
choices offered to Shepard were suppose to have three totally different consequences;
the endings could have done more to show these different consequences. Instead
Bioware gave us three very similar ending cut scenes that don’t deal with any
of the consequences of Shepard's galaxy altering decision.

Second did Mac Walters watch Matrix Reloaded before writing the last 20 minutes
of Mass Effect 3? The Architect character didn't work then and it doesn't work
now. Especially since the higher being who was in charge of the Reapers
came out of left field in Mass Effect 3. I know there were some hints dropped
in a couple of lines of dialogue in random parts of the  game, but it
still felt so out of place when put in the context of all three mass effect
games. If Mac Walters had the Catalyst in mind since Mass Effect 1 he should
have dropped hints of it since the first game. Because right now it just looks
like Walters wrote himself in a corner and created a dues ex machina device to
get him self out of a jam.

Third the reason behind the Reapers existence was dumb. The reason why Reaper’s
systematically harvest organic life forms every 50,000 years was because it was
inevitable that synthetic life forms will rebel against their organic creators.
So why don't the Reapers just harvest the rebelling synthetic life forms then? If
the rule of the universe is that synthetic life forms will always rebel against
their creators, why haven't the Reapers rebelled against the Catalyst then? There
are so many other plot holes opened up with the revelation of the Catalyst that
I can't list them all. Bioware should have kept things simple and just left the
Reapers as the big bad guys of the universe who saw organic life forms as
cattle.

Four, was a scene cut out showing why the Normandy  was in mid FTL travel
when the Mass Relays went off-line or did you guys just don't like the Normandy
and were looking for any excuse to make it crash? As I recall the Normandy was suppose to
be taking part in the big battle over Earth. If you guys decide to give a
completely unsatisfactory fate to the Normandy
and its crew at least make it fit into the continuity of the story.

Five, for an epic game and an epic trilogy the ending didn't have an epic feel.
Where was the big celebrations and the state funeral for the person who just
single handily saved the galaxy. I never thought I would ever be saying this
but Bioware could have learned something from the ending of Return of the
Jedi.  Granted that no matter what Bioware did to end the Mass Effect series
it would have almost been impossible to live up to everyone's expectations. But
what they did, with the final cut scene being the Normandy crashing and different variations
of characters walking out depending on the ending you chose made the ending feel
like a fizzle and a little bit of an insult to the fans.

Bioware has been in the video game business for two decades now, they should
have known better on how to provide a satisfactory ending to the loyal
fans who have followed the series for the past five years, especially after
some of the flak they got for the ending of Dragon Age 2. What's worse is that
we've seen Bioware do some great endings for their games. I remember Knights of
the Old Republic didn't have a very long or
complex ending but both of the endings for that game felt very satisfying.
Hell, I would have been happier with a text only ending that depicted the
consequences of my decisions which they did for Jade Empire and Dragon Age
Origins and would have provided some closure on characters I've come to love
over the course of the three games. I know I'm not the only one that was
disappointed by this ending and I'm sure there were people working at Bioware
that realized that the ending they were putting in Mass Effect 3 was going to
get a strong negative reaction from the fans.

Bioware couldn't pull off a smart bittersweet ending and what's worse they
forced this ending with some small variation on all the players, who
are accustomed to having vastly different endings. If Bioware was considerate
of their fans they should have at least made an option for the players to
have a traditional cliché happy ending. Honestly it would have been easy
to please the fans of Mass Effect, we would have all liked an option to just
see our Shepard being able to ride off into the sunset with the girl or
guy love interest and have some final closure on characters we have all grown
to love over the years.
