If someone can figure out how many purchases minimum it will take to max out everything, how many credits this will require, and how much time on average this will take, I think it will put it all in perspective for a lot of people including the OP.
Since it's all random, it's nearly impossible to figure out.

What's with the idea that $200 is a lot of money?
It isn't, but the whole reason that I have money is that I don't do silly things like throw $200 at random unlocks in a PC game. As countless authors have pointed out, the only realistic way to make money is to control expenses. Progressive tax structures are so punitive that increasing your income has minimal impact after a certain point unless you have a business take off for the stratosphere.

Some assumptions need be made about the % chance of silver, gold, black in each pack, plus the requirement that none of the cards ever repeat then it's just math.KiraTsukasa wrote...

Except that all character cards DO repeat, even after you've unlocked everything for that class. You could buy a hundred packs and get nothing but character cards that you already have.

Consider that the Spectre packs cost about $2, the Veteran cost $1. It's like buying booster packs for said things. I recall the disappointment of getting a handful of Magic Booster packs and nothing rare in the bundle. I think the fact that there was art and descriptions on even the less useful things made the sting lighter.
Now we're older, and we have more disposable income with which to blow on the "booster packs". It's meant to have an addictive quality. It's the same concept as rare drops, etc. in MMORPGs. Psychologically, variable reinforcement is more effective. It's also somewhat more manipulative, but if people will pay (like the OP) it makes good business sense to people like Blizzard, etc. to create that draw.
I think folks in the single-player RPG realm are used to having a situation where you can get EVERYTHING if you're meticulous enough. This system works counter to that, and can seem frustrating. Also, there's no means of trading (as there would be with something like cards) so the net monetary investment is presumably more wasted (though it tends to be with cards as well).

I do admit I spent 400 BioWare points at the start as I wanted to boost my chances but I didn't really care if I got anything good or not

I agree with his original point, kinda ridiculous that you can unlock that many packs (100 Spectre Packs) and not unlock everything. I mostly have what I want but would be nice if we could instead just outright buy the items we want instead. Kinda sucks when you're just missing that one thing you want to play.

Think about it, if you're wealthy spending a few hundred on a game is actually much better usage of your money than say spending $30 million on an oil painting of a fat naked lady on a couch...

The whole POINT is to unlock all those weapons yourself... that's the fun part. It's not about being there, it's about GETTING there. (ie. the jouney)

Congrats EA and Bioware. You took out the nudity from your games, but put real gambling in it instead. It's for the children of course.
