Vanguard Feels Like Cheating

I went through ME and ME2 as a Soldier, and enjoyed it, despite the tedium of ME2's combat.  Upon starting ME3, however, I learned that the burst fire assault rifles really, really suck without upgrades, and the new enemy AI that allows them to actually advance and try to kill you rather than sitting in cover all day long convinced me to give Vanguard a shot.

It really does feel like cheating compared to the Soldier.  I often don't even need guns, I can just bomb around a given fight using Biotic Charge like some sort of comic book character, occasionally blowing Nova in the middle of a group.  Fights end very, very quickly.  On Hardcore at the moment, feel like I need to up it to Insanity.

At the same time, now that I've gotten far enough along to upgrade assault rifles fairly significantly, I've discovered they're actually pretty damn good, which is making me wonder if I shouldn't restart with Soldier again, as it seems to trivialize the content a little less than Vanguard.

SPOILER BELOW:

I just finished rescuing the Krogan female; am I too far along that restarting as a Soldier would be a bad idea?

Honestly, ME2 Vanguards were tough and rewarding. ME3 Vanguards are easy-mode.

Since you don't actually have to headshot things anymore with Vanguards, just spam AoE novas and warp-charge biotic explosions, I'd agree it's easier than ME2.

I agree.

There is a fix though - just ignore Nova. Insanity will still be easier than ME2, but No-Nova still helps.

I am indeed ignoring Nova at the moment. It feels like the old vanguard, but with many shotguns you can get below the cooldown you had in ME2, so it's a bit more powerful this time around.

I did try the claymore plus reload trick, but that didn't work out too well since you don't really fire while meleeing anymore. You watch the melee animation and THEN you fire. Instead you can use the sprint button, but that will often force you into cover.

ME3 is too focused on power spamming. Cooldowns already are extremely fast and Vanguards have Nova available in between.

I typically don't play MP with people using vanguard, simply because it takes all the fun out of needing to work together.

To answer the OP's question though - you're not THAT far into the game. Maybe a fourth or so, depending on how much time you spend scanning and whatnot.

Easy mode? Ridiculous. The hardest part of the game were avoiding the reaper lasers.

No shields? Charge!
Brute charging you? Challenge accepted!

I disagree. Vanguards are finally fun. If you feel like the game is too easy, don't import and up the difficulty to Insanity.

Play on Gold, then you're HAPPY to have one of us Vanguards along for the ride.

Maybe you should be a little more thankful to us Vanguards. We Vanguards are often the heroes to the rescue, especially on Gold. When you puny Infiltators/Engineers/Adepts get downed... AGAIN, we Vanguards often Charge right towards you, securing the area around you and then ressurect your sorry asses, loooooong before any other (non-Vanguard) team mate can reach your location.

We Vanguards are not only proud warriors, we are also capable medics, saving your downed asses. B)

MP makes me sad, because vanguard is the most popular class now :(  My hipster heart is breaking.

I guess our complaints that it's easy might be a bit elitist. We're the people who stomped ME2 on insanity with vanguard, with faster clear times than any other class could achieve. As for not importing, I pity anyone who plays ME3 without an import. If I could import and start at level 1 I'd try it.

You're implying that someone was downed away from the group. If that's the case, you probably need to re-consider who you're playing with. On gold, the people that typically go down in my games are the ones [biotic] charging out there. That's why I never play gold and rarely play silver when playing with randoms.

Not to mention - on more than one occasion - as I go to revive the vanguards who foolish charge an engineer without realizing that there's a nearby turret, they often leave the match out of shame/embarrassment/rage.

YOU might be a useful vanguard; but because it's what everyone's referring to as the "easy button," everyone's reverting to it - so either you're stuck with 1.) a person who's good to the point that the game becomes boring or 2.) a person who thinks they're so good to the point that it winds up getting the rest of the team wiped.

Or 3.) a person who's good but not THAT good that the game becomes boring for everyone else. <- that's me

And sometimes as person gets separated from the team because of the enemies pushing him/her away from the group. It's entirely possible, even with good teamwork. Especially on those fetch-quest waves (enable/disable 4 devices), that's often the moment when a team member can get separated from the group. At that point, the team member who's alone can get killed quickly (unless he's REALLY good). Luckily, I can simply Charge towards my team member and help him.

Do you play on PC or Xbox 360? I'm an Xbox player, so if you're too, feel free to add me.

Of course, I forgot how remarkably boring Soldier really is. Adrenaline Rush -> Shoot -> Cover -> Cooldown -> Adrenaline Rush.

I'll admit, the vanguard got a hell of a massive buff in this game. I'm currently using the Revenant and the Carnfiex as my load out, but even then the cooldown times are still trivial once you get the proper Armor and Weapon Upgrades.

Not complaining though. I like being a biotic god.

Hmm. An AR Vanguard might be the best of both worlds, then.

I did.  Started from scratch, Insanity, and was tearing up like no tomorrow.  Didn't even need a gun... or squadmates.

I practically ignored nova, it seemed like a death wish in insanity, seeing how quickly you die anyway. I'm breezing through insanity on my infiltrator but I will be playing vanguard next. What builds are you all using? Also I assume that you only nova when charge is off CD for the shield boost instantly?

Singularity/Warp/Overload > Charge > 2 blasts with the AT-12 Raider > Nova > Repeat ^^

Nova is an awesome power if used correctly. Just make sure you're wearing either Full Rosenkov or Inferno  so that you can use Charge right after Nova to replenish your barrier.

Oh, pish posh. You want a challenge that far exceeds anything you can do in the game conventionally, try a little self-imposed challenge I made up last night on the spot called "guardian angel". Get on an engineer or adept, find a bad vanguard, and try to keep him alive throughout the round. If he goes down, you have to revive him at all costs; if he dies, you lose the challenge.

Your Charge will be off Cooldown just before completing Nova animation if done right. So basically.... Liara said it best:

"The Commander is also a powerful Biotic and he is nearly unstoppable when he Charges into battle."

Ignore Nova for a minute. The reason Vanguard is easier in ME3 I think is largely due to the enemy deployment.

Arrival style enemy deployment favors Vanguard. Even in ME2 -Arrival, Vanguard have the easiest time.

Vanguards are design to fight multiple fronts and multiple direction without cover. While other classes too can fight out of cover, they do not fare as well as Vanguards and they are so slow to reach their target.

In ME3, Shepard is extremely agile and much faster, combine that agility and speed with Charge... well.
