I'm sitting here now as the credits roll on ME3. Abigail Shepard, the Ruthless Spacer Infilitrator who was so cold to that she gave no quoarter to anyone, has decided to do something unselfish for once and Merged with the Catalyst to allow Synthesis. Her last thoughts were of Joker, who went from a no-nonsense aloof pilot to a friend and a source of humor whenever the mood got to heavy, of Admiral Anderson who had guided her from an N7 Marine to the savior of the galaxy, and Liara who melted her cold heart and she would never see again.
I cried, I really did. It was the fifth time I cried, the others being Thane's and Mordin's death. Some of the things said right before the final battle on Earth, and then Admiral Anderson's death.
Overall I think this is the best game I've played in a long time. There were some combat issues here and there, some graphic glitches but all in all I found myself on the edge of my seat the entire time. Laughing, smiling, getting angry (at the right times) and just having a kick ass time the entire time.
Full discolosure, I was a spoilers junky going in and new all about the endings and most of the big details of the story before I even played the game for the first time. Some would say that it 'prepared me' for the "horendous" endings but honestly to me they weren't that horendous. From what I had seen with my own eyes on youtube and had read from those who actually beat the game I had expected that I was going to be like most people... hating the ruined experience at the end.
But I didn't...
Yes, the endings did come right out of left field and seemed to make no immediate sense at first. But they weren't bad, in fact going into my characters head and deciding on which option she would take, was some of the best roleplaying I've done in the entire Mass Effect series. It was something I had to stop and think about, and decide... knowing all that she had gone through... What would she decide?
I walked into the ending sequence totally expecting to pick Control. The option that given in the vacuum of knowning the ending, without experiencing the build up, made the most sense for Abigail Shepard. But by the time the Illusive Man had given his whole speech, and with Anderson dying after telling me how proud he was, about knowing that no matter what she wasn't going to see Liara and have "blue babies." She decided to leavethe galaxy a bit better than she left it, she would be the engine of destruction she was thought of and Destroy, she would be the ruthless **** everyone knew she was and Control... Those were Anderson and TIMs paths.
For the first time in the whole experience I felt that Abigail finally had control of her own destiny. So she ran to the Catalyst and sacrificed her essence to ensure the cycle would never happen again.
Having said all that: I will say I agree with the "haters" that the Normandy getting caught in the blast made absolutely no sense and wasn't necessary to do it all. But that one thing did not ruin the ending for me, nor did it ruin the experience of Mass Effect for me at all. I plan on finishing up some touches to my Vanguard, Carol Shepard and playing through again very soon.
The Game itself, beyond the endings:
The story was wonderfully told and just brilliant in so many ways. Callbacks to the other games were excellently pulled off and there wasn't once that I didn't think that this game was anything but a perfect closure to the events of all three games. The new characters were excellent in everyway. They were interesting, well acted and appealing. Specialist Traynor was a specific stand out for me because it actually made my Abigail consider leaving Liara because she realized how cold Liara had become aand how Traynor reminded her of the things about Liara she had fallen in love with.
However with that I do see so flaws. While in this playthrough I did romance Liara I can see that my Jack and Miranda romanced playthroughs are going to get a bit shafted. I never romanced Jacob it it seems that's going to be a problem as well. In addition while I got the point of not having dialouge trees everytime you talked to someone it did feel like they could have found more for people to say and interact with. Auto-Dialouge has never been a huge problem for me but there were a few glaring moments where I did go "she wouldn't have said anything remotely like that."
Combat this time, was a freaking godsend. Everything that was wrong about the combat in the first two games is gone and fixed. Cooldowns can get so fast that I could spend nearly the entire battles in cloak if I wanted to, picking which weapons I wanted rather than being forced to have certain ones was great. Add to that the battles were tough but fair, rather than just fair (ME1) or tough (ME2) making the game challenging but never once did I think I was being cheated or ripped off because of enemy strength. I also though being able to manually revive squadmates and save the medigel for later was a great idea that had me sometimes running off towards the squad mate because I knew I was going to need that medi-gel later.
The only real problem I had with the combat aspects was the ocasional wonkiness of having one button do three different things. Also it seems you can no longer spread out your powers to several different targets (ie Have Garrus Overload one person, while you incinerate another and Liara Stasises a third) which was disappointing but not a huge problem.
Overall: The game was a ton of fun and incredibly engaging. Combat was smooth for the most part, and the story was near expertly pulled off. And for all the flak the endings get, their real problem is coming out of nowhere rather than being poor in an academic sense. I will be definately playing through this game multiple times and I find it to be the worthy close of the Mass Effect story.
Some regrets:
1. Hitting the Paragon Interrupt on Liara when she was about to Biotic Javick into next week. I just saw the interrupt and hit it without thinking.
2. Apparently not having enough Reputation to Persuade the Illusive Man into "Sarening" himself.
3. Never saw Conrad, I renegaded him in ME2, wonder if that's why.

ad.3: What happens if you "renegade" Conrad in ME2?

You shoot him in the foot but later you hear a news report that he died in a car accident.

That is really sad for Conrad... I have to try the trilogy as a renegade someday.
