ME1's gameplay or mechanics did not make this
series. Yes, likeable characters and voice actors are a plus, but they too only added to the story/game. Going back to the first game, it resonated a feeling with Decent: FreeSpace/2, which is the scope of the overall story. Luke destroyed the Death Star, Sheared defeated Sovereign, The victory against the SD Lucifer in FreeSpace had its’ own personal cost—We saved Earth, but now are unable to retur.
ME1 and 2 had this, agreeable and with a strong array of characters invested the audience in each game. But, take away a looming destruction-Death Star, Reapers, Shivans, hell even B5’s Shadows or DS9 Dominion war- (Though cliché,but yet works) and you give the story hard to care about.
So did ME 1 & 2 work? Yes. But with one criticism. M4, Pt. II by Faunts was one of the best ending licensed
songs used during a game’s credits. Anyone else enjoy that song in ME1? What happened, Bioware? A lyrical song should’ve been used in both ME2&3. Minus -10000 Bioware points for lack of effort.
Now on to ME3. Yeah, everyone knew what was going to happen (From the ending t ME2 to the trailers) SPOILERS! Until new we haven’t seen Earth, now you expect us to care? Was the little boy supposed to make it all the more tragic? ME3 is like the ‘Harry Potter’ series (Got to kill them all off and hope the audience
cries)
First off, the invasion happens too soon. Give us time to see Earth before the trailer happens. I’m on earth for 3 minute then I’m gone, gone to Mars (Oh Watchmen forgive me.) Then after hours of gameplay we get to Earth which is GoW, but has no character motivation. On Mars you ‘kill’ a squad member, but, oh what, he’s okay. I’m sorry, but actions without consequences is Twilight stuff. You could have either killed him (bad idea) or just skip the whole fake out. Then latter on have Kaidan or Ashley called back to Udina himself or something/someone else. What a useless scene, damn.
Once we leave Earth, the game actually starts to feel more like a Mas Effect game, now I can start to care about places more interesting than Act 1. Bailey was also dropped from the story for no reason. This character could’ve been used in a much better way, but no, I guess you just ran out of time and had to come up with an ending by the next day. In ME2, we had somewhat control over who live or not. In ME3, you failed. Either 1) scripted deaths or 2) Allow us the chance to save them.
The ending….well…come on. Deus-ex human revolution did the same damn thing, and did it better than ME3. I was going to ask my agent about writing with Bioware, but….now…I may not call trident for the opportunity. The sad thing is here is Bioware can tell a great story, but this poor effort, makes RotJ look almost perfect in comparisons. As RLM would say, “What were you thinking."
