Yes, I was very touched when Thane died as well.

Pity the ending swept all my emotional involvement aside.

I just reloaded a saved game near the beginning to replay the initial conversation at the hospital.  

The conversation is so short and lackluster, but it's all we get. 

ETA: And to anyone else who romanced him, their. . . reunion. . . animation looked so freaking weird to me LOL.

I was sad when he died too, but I felt like it was a nice way for him to go out.
