1- Spam. If they had it, someone, somewhere, sometime, is going to spam the chat to the point where you either can't see the game, or you can't see what people are saying because it keeps getting over written.
2- Matches can get too hectic. In a firefight, I don't have time to stop and read a huge chunk of text instructions from someone that needs help and doesn't know where they are.
3- Language. I don't know how to read German or Korean or Spanish or Japanese or any number of other languages out there.
4- Chat speak. People's grammar and spelling are bad enough on forums, where I actually have time to decipher it. I'd rather play the game than spend an hour trying to figure out if you're pinned down or just needlessly complimenting my recent headshot.
On paper, text chat sounds good, but in practice it's really not all that it's cracked up to be. Going out and spending $10 on a headset is a much better idea.

I used to play Age of Empires III a lot and text chat was THE way to do anything in that game, so I have some experience on the following points:
1 is a very rare thing.
2 I can defniitely understand but it should exist as an option if someone can manage it. Just being able to outline a general gameplan (Like sentinel saying to vanguard "I warp everything, you charge it and nova it!" and Vanguard agreeing) would help tons.
3 is not the case, generally. Most gamers can speak marginal English, especially if they're Western European or Asian.
4 is not a huge issue for most people.

Based on my experience with the demo it's near impossible to set up a match with your friends. Mics are nice and all, but they won't help before you'll get into the lobby - and that's usually the problem.

Ofc there should be text chat. And the option to mute it obviously.

Why not leave guns out of the game because you can miss while firing them?KiraTsukasa wrote...

On a serious note, this is the dumbest collection of reasons I have ever read (no offense). Also, most of your "reasons" also apply to voicechat. Plus, I personally don't enjoy 14 year olds screaming into their mics the entire game.

At least put a chat on the lobby, i'm tired of seeing a bunch of low levels try to play on silver and gold also a lot of players with the same class like 3 soldiers in one lobby and they don't switch the classesCazlee wrote...
I'm not sure honestly. First of all, whose going to see the chat between all the combat spam? Second of all, I don't want teammates dying stupidly because they were typing PHANTOM ON STAIRS!!!1 instead of running away. Lastly, negative and rude feedback is way more likely via typing than voice chatting.

I used to play Jedi Knight and Mysteries of the Sith, in addition to Galactic Battlegrounds, and I know that these issues become even bigger in a shooter than they do in an RTS, where the gameplay has more times where things are slow and spots where things are fast are far and inbetween (not to mention that fast in an RTS and fast in a shooter are two different things).
1- It's not so rare anymore. Gaming today has really deteriorated from what it was in the mid-90s. People will often flood chats to ruin a game because they're doing poorly or simply because they don't like someone in the game. I believe the term "Griefer" is applied here.
2- Unless you are practiced in typing and know where the keys are even without looking, it's going to take awhile to type that out. If you rush, then it takes you to point #4.
3- A lot of those people post on forums saying "pardon my English" and their posts take three or more readings to understand. And that's after they used Google Translate. That feature isn't avaliable in-game and I doubt that they can even read English without Google Translate. Even second languange English speakers tend to have poor enough sentences that it takes a few tries to get the meaning while reading it.
4- As I've said before, chat has deteriorated from what it was, and it was pretty bad before. Things have dropped so far that there are acronyms that I can't even translate anymore. I don't have time to try to decipher "OMGWWJDWTFBBQHAXLOLLMAOWUT!!!!!!!!11111" during a match.
5- A point that I left out, activating chat leaves you vulnerable. Trying to tell people that there's a Phantom running amok leaves you laying on your back in the time that it takes to type it out. That just creates a pain to your team where you could have spent that time killing it instead.

You've never played a game with text chat have you? If they decide to put text chat into the game, this forum will be flooded with posts to take it back out for the reasons that I just mentioned.
It is, in fact, a BAD idea.

The reasons you are listing.. seriously? In every single game the chat has been nothing but a great thing. I've never seen anything that you listed in many years of playing to the point it would've been annoying. Sure there's someone who goes "omg noob", but so what, welcome to the world.
You're focusing on the point that you can't understand what they type. Alright, then don't pay attention to what they type. Just pretend there's no communication at all in the game and the other players are bots, like at the moment without chat.
Saying that the forum will be flooded with posts to take it back out if they add chat in the game...? Yeah, I hate to read Battlefield forums, they whine all the time about the chat and how horrible it is!
This is the first PC multiplayer game I've come across that doesn't have chat and you make it a good thing? The few threads about this is small, think about if some big multiplayer title would've removed chat, I can't even imagine what a response that would get.

eg. you might have gone through a bronze game easily, you can request the leader change to silver if you want, also ask if anyones got a different class they can change to etc. using it for coordination is good, also if you die and you know it's better just to be left behind, you can easily say that instead of your squadmates rushing to revive you.
Having it take up the screen would be stupid, give it like 3 lines above where your ammon meter is, it wouldn't be intrusive.
Left 4 Dead text chat system works fine, just nick that.

Or at least crack a few jokes before going off to watch people snipe EVERY freakin kill from me. 4 waves a sniper follows me around, snipes everything I start shooting and apparently only what I start shooting. Ever wish for Friendly Fire? That's the time.

Your personal preference not to communicate with fellow players does not make chat a bad idea.
I'm sure an option to turn off the chat display can be implemented.
