How is Origin supposed to be considered a serious competitor to Steam if EA won't insist on providing a basic PC game feature in one of its flagship products?

Because they aren't a competitor to steam, Steam is superior in every respect, I think EA realizes this, and is instead using forced use tactics, so you have to use their service to play as opposed to making their service better in order to attract more consumers in that respect.
Although I concede it probably isn't feasible to provide the same level of support as Valve provides for Steam, but whatever.
But I will never buy anything through Origin...EVER.

agreed, as it was supposed to be a feature (there was a non functional key command for it in demo)...and really how hard can it be to implement a TEXT chat?

I just played a game where I joined in wave 10, in the middle of two phantoms. I ended the game with a score of 42 and people in there thought I was leeching. There's no notice that a new player join either. Shesh.

I haven't read the last 40,000 pages in favour, but personally I would prefer it if my team-mates were fighting rather than calling each other 'Nubzors' or whatever the current juvenile term might be.
Having played WoW for years, it always amazes me that the ones most active on text chat, usually being insulting, are the least productive for the team.
Just my opinion

I can talk to my team mates sure. Though its not much help if i have to ask them "Hey can you spin like a idiot if you understand?" if they don't have a mic.

I probably wouldn't have purchased the game, had I known that text chat wasn't included. This is a seriously blatent console port no no. It's kind of sad that, as a company, they are where they are today due to PC gamer fans, and this is how we are treated. Talk about cutting corners!

Didn't the demo even include a key bind for it?? Why take it out... I would even kill for just some basic counter-strike like radio commands.. (go go go, fall back, regroup, hold this position etc).

No text chat in the first place was just a huge overlook - fire the responsible people for not having it (coder, design lead, testers, although i doubt this was tested on the PC any more than just office test).
Either text chat or at least some sort of voting options in the lobby - like change map/difficulty/opponent/etc.

If I recall correctly the Demo even had a Key Binding 'prepared' for Text Chat, just that it didn't work. So I was fairly sure it would be implemented on Release.
I was quite surprised and unimpressed that it did not. Text Chat is absolutely critical in such a Co-Op Game, especially if VOIP is not an option.
Though, I'm sure they'll add it in an upcoming Patch and/or DLC.This is not a matter they can simply ignore.
