If it's a question of latency or bandwidth hogging why not just add a character limit and a cooldown on how often you can reply so people can't spam it.

There should've been some sort of basic text chat for lobbies at least

Especially given how much empty space the loby features.  Seriously, with zero menu adjustments we've got room for at least a basic chat box.

Yea this would be a nice addition, for some reason implementing an archaic game communication system shouldn't be too extravagant, unless i am wrong abou ta great many things.

+1, you even have a keybind for it!

What did you guys do, remove it to add it on later as on disc DLC?

I think there's a few reasons they left it out.

1- Spam. If they had it, someone, somewhere, sometime, is going to spam the chat to the point where you either can't see the game, or you can't see what people are saying because it keeps getting over written.

2- Matches can get too hectic. In a firefight, I don't have time to stop and read a huge chunk of text instructions from someone that needs help and doesn't know where they are.

3- Language. I don't know how to read German or Korean or Spanish or Japanese or any number of other languages out there.

4- Chat speak. People's grammar and spelling are bad enough on forums, where I actually have time to decipher it. I'd rather play the game than spend an hour trying to figure out if you're pinned down or just needlessly complimenting my recent headshot.

On paper, text chat sounds good, but in practice it's really not all that it's cracked up to be. Going out and spending $10 on a headset is a much better idea.

Oh really? You know, some people can't talk... Not because they are shy, but because they are mute. :( And they aren't that rare in online gaming.

I asked one of our multiplayer designers about the lack of text chat. He's aware of the problem. I can't promise any fix because I can't speak for him and what he's able to do, but I just wanted to let you all know we're aware of the concern.

I don't see it as a "problem." In the demo the keybind was there.. meaning at one point it was being worked on and/or in. You guys couldn't finish it or fix it for launch, which was why it was inaccessable in the demo, so you removed the keybind all together.  I doubt any new features will be added to ME3.

I care more about lobby chat than in-game chat. In situations where there's trouble and I would want to communicate, I have no time to type.

one could chat through origin.
I suppose thats the reason a chat was omitted.

lobby chat is realy needed
for example, you just need to inform others for what reason you're not ready for game
voice chat don't resolve the problem

I constantly feel akward because I'm the only one not readying when we're waiting for a fourth. People think you can do it with three, but that's a gamble I don't want to make. I've been kicked several times when I know a bit of communication could have solved it.

Good news is, the characters actually communicate with eachother in game, pointing out threats. That's pretty cool imo.

This is definitely needed. I have a mic, but I don't really want to use it unless I'm playing with friends. In a 4 player co-op game like this, there needs to be some easy way of communicating.

Incredibly stupid that this is not in by default. Utterly impossible to communicate without having a mic plugged in, which not everyone has.

It gets really awkward really fast with only one guy talking; especially since, with no feedback from the others unless they're alsu using mics and in hte mood for talking, you have no idea if the others can actually hear you or not...

Me3 uses Unreal doesn't it? I would think it would have that functionality by default.
