Wanted to give some feedback to the devs about the war assets mechanic and couldn't find an appropriate thread to do it, so here I go. (Note: this thread isn't about the endings)
As I was playing through the game, I really loved checking in on the war assets console and reading how allies, old and new, were contributing to the fight. It seemed like all those choices I made way back in ME1 and ME2 were finally paying off for better or worse.
BUT then I played the endgame missions.
First, there's no clear communication to the player how they're accumulated military strength affects the endgame. Low or high strength, the Crucible is undamaged and docks with the Citadel. Low or high, Hammer is nearly wiped out and everyone dies in the suicide run (except squadmates apparently depnding on strength). Yet depending on your effective strength, your options with the crucible may be limited and Earth may or may not be saved. The game shows the same events unfolding but then the outcomes can differ. There needed to be clearer feedback to the player that having more or fewer forces would have led to different outcomes. I shouldn't have to read a guide to find this out.
Second, the composition of my war assets doesn't change anything in the end missions. I can appreciate that it's hard to design and balance a multitude of branching levels, but even some scripted scenes would have been nice. Running through the ruins of London, I could have come across Reaper forces engaging a group of Geth primes or Quarian commandos or both working together, receive covering fire from STG forces or a Krogan companies depending on my choices. Instead the end missions involve Shepard and two squadmates completely alone in the middle of a warzone. The only time the composition seemed to affect anything is when the fleets jump into Sol and then it's the same there on.
So in summary, I liked reading the text entries on the war assets, but I didn't like how it boiled all my choices down to a single number and then didn't communicate to me how that number, low or high, actually affected the outcome.

Well, you're right about some sequences being the same with the ending sequence, but my first playthrough, where I only had 2k-2.5k EMA, the allied forces got owned in space and only about 20% of Hammer Force survived to fight the reaper forces en mass. My second playthrough, when I had more like 3k-3.5k EMA, the beginning scene when allied forces engage the reapers in space was more or less won and 50% of Hammer Force arrived en mass to fight the reapers. Oh, also when you are fighting your way to fire off the Thanix missiles at the Reaper destroyer, in my first playthrough, all the tanks I came across got destroyed pretty quickly. The second time through however, I believe most of them lived.
It would have been cool to see the colonists from Feros fighting as one or Wrex leading his krogan into a swarm of husks and what not, but I appreciated those differences.

Ok, I stand corrected then. I had 3.5k the first time and 5k the second, so I guess I was in the uppermost bracket both times. It just didn't seem as clear to me as in ME2 where you can tell when your ship upgrades make a difference. Not sure about those tanks though, all the ones I came across were burnt out or abandoned.
