On top of the endings themselves being terrible most everyone hates how the Reapers went from individual biosynthetic dreadnoughts that can take away your will to...the army of a horrible plot device ghost child.

So I propose we brainstorm on some ways that the Reapers could have a better origin? Personally I think the Reapers should have come about from a professor or scientist coming increasingly unhinged as his or her people die around him. Cures fail, surgery/implants don't seem to work, and soon he/she feels like the only hope is to preserve the race.

In the professor's insanity the person would become half man, half machine, and take the sick and dying to join in ever lasting unity. We are one. As the professor became more machine than organic it would design a signal to attract the rest of its people to it, to draw in the sick, the dying, the hiding. It would become a nation contained within a shell, free of all weakness, immense in its power to preserve itself.

But it would think: why should I be the only one to ascend to such a higher plane of existence? So it continued to build until it was immense in its size that it could block out the sun wherever it landed. Its signal so strong, all intelligent life feeling a tingle at the back of the skull, growing into loud whispers that cannot leave, and themselves slipping away...

But it was all for a greater cause, they would no longer know suffering, they would achieve the apex of life, to be immortal, to be unstoppable.

But it would encounter a problem: all resources were harvested in the construction of itself and its kin, all organics were gone.

So it schemed and concluded that organic life could be herded, building the mass relays, allowing organics a fraction of the perfection that was its being, not strong enough to stop it, but requiring enough intellect to show that the species was deemed worthy of becoming like it.

So it retreated into the blackness beyond the galaxy in order to wait, to slumber with its handful of siblings.

It would be the Harbinger of their perfection.

My Reaper origin?

The Reapers have no beginning. They have no end. They are infinite.

Because that's how Sovereign described it. Attempting to give an origin and justification of actions to something like that, cheapens them. Would've liked it a lot better if there was no attempt made to explain the Reapers.

This. They should be horror far beyond our understanding. Like in Lovecraft stories. You can win, but you should not completly understand, for your own sanity sake.

I liked the explanation for them as a rogue AI that twisted its original purpose, which floated on these forums for a while.

And I don't really understand why people give Sovereign's words so much credit. Of course a Reaper is going to boast that they're divine and immeasurable. Doesn't make that true.

I think part of the horror of the Reapers was their enigmatic nature.
"You cannot comprehend your salvation" and all that. I'm fine with just leaving them as terrifying unknowns. Besides, that leaves a little nibbling doubt that maybe they do know more than you and your actions, while saving you in the short term, are actually damning the universe in the long term.

No origin given. Just leave them as horrible monsters from dark space that occasionally harvest life for reasons incomprehensible to us. They are each a nation, infinitely more complex than a human mind. Giving them any motivation that a human can think of is downright silly.
