Since literally tens of thousands of pope have gotten past this point without issue, you can hardly call the GAME flawed..

Really? Tens of thousands of pope? I didn't even know that the Church has HAD that many popes!

Clearly you are not aware of the Church of Discordia.  Everyone is a pope.

wow, ure all of great help.. idiots

to help u a bit more constructively, some input would be needed:

which char are u playing; who s in ur party; how many casters & which spells; which talents r u using etc

some general hints: turn off npcs tactics for harder battles (upper bar -> tactics -> disable tactics)

ur dog and morrigan would have some stunning-abilities at this moment -> use these to control the melees and go for the mage first

if i remeber correctly the archers are low of life, so use ur single-target spells and staff attack to get rid of em (a bow would be just as good if u have a thief around)

there are some traps set, so dont send ur melees up to the archers

watch out not to get surrounded by to many foes -> flanking attacks do extra damage

No need to start name calling. If you want to help the OP, that's great, but stop the insults.

@Stanley

I realize that there are virtually infinite options, but after I try 6-10 of them and I am still getting absolutely massacred on every attempt, it doesn't instill much confidence that I will ever win this battle, and especially given the fact that my game is stuck now and I can't play anymore until I win or regress by a large amount of time.

I've tried many of the suggestions on this thread including using the CC of the dog, fireballs/other spells, going after Zevran right off the bat, swarming, etc and I have the same exact problem every single time. The 11 enemies just overwhelm me and cut me down in no time flat, way too fast for the healer mage and health potions or any combination thereof. I can't seem to only pull a portion of them either. You have to fight all of them at once. So I'm still stuck, but I'm still trying a few more things... if anyone has more specific advice I'm all ears, but again after 10 miserably failed battles, it just starts to get frustrating.

Zevran just wants a hug. Attack him with the power of love.

I fought that battle last night.

There was a bunch of enemies directly in front on me. I used fireball on them. But other group spells, stuns or grenades should be effective.

I moved twardso the path on the right. Leliana had to disarm some traps first. But it is a protected position to defend from. Then once I dealt with the nearby enemies I used the path to go round to kill the archers on the Left cliff.

Yeah, do give up please. One more of these ‘game is flawed ’cause i suck’- type of posts does not make these forums a healthier place. You’ve reminded me of another good forum user who had problems with a dozen of wolves/traps early in the game and thus overly criticized it so had way too many unkind replies (closed DAO forums) so i’ve spared him/her/whatever – you are just inviting those, you are.

But just to be civilised with my first post here – get more xp/skills-spells/better equipment if you are a complete plonker, otherwise just switch off tactics and play. Your characters should barely make one or two vanilla attacks during that fight on nightmare (and only if you’re too drunk and missed a turn). 11 puny opponents, no bosses/elites, lvl9... do give up. (i feel a need to add that if you are impaired in any way – please disregard – no offence intended)

Yea Ok I realize the Original message might have sounded slightly trollish, so I retract that. It was my frustration speaking. Obviously many others have gotten past this point with not many issues. So please enlighten me with specific tactics to get past this point, because I'm stumped. I'm a 2H Great Sword warrior, I have a healer-mage, and my dog for CC, and I've been varying the 4th character but nothing works for me so far. I have limited healing potions and ingredients are almost out.

The dangers (in order of threat potential) as I see them are:

Mage, Zevran, melee fighters and archers.

Then again, I had Glyph of Warding up and Alistair on my team, so arrow defense was pretty good for us.

That caster can unleash some nasty spells though. Paralyze and Chain Lightning were nearly complete party wipes for me if not for Wynne's Group Heal and learning to take her out faster on subsequent playthroughs. Zevran is a good damage dealer, but frail. It won't take long to end him and I advise dealing with most of his minions first (I usually kill him after the caster and the melee bandits but before the archers).

My tactics for that fight involve locking down Zev and burning down the mage fast. Having 4-5 characters past that point I've done everything from having the tank stick on him to slamming him with crushing prison to using cone of cold. Cone of cold is probably the best option since you can potentially take their entire front line out of the battle for a while. There's also mind blast, mass paralyze, etc. It can be challenging but it's a good fight to really let your tactics shine.

I always move to the path on the right to reduce the flanking but it's not enough... even after I disable the traps.

Console commands are there for a reason, theres no harm in using them if you get stuck

Isn't that the battle where you can take the high ground on either side? If not, taking the high ground is good advice in general.

How are you so low level and figting Zev? Think you need to complete two major chains before he shows up. I've been trying to get a low level zev encounter forever. Never seen it.

Ah i remember that. The first thing i did was to alpha the mage girl. Because she had did this immense shock blast. The Archers are there for last, because the sideways are layed with traps. Then it wasnt as difficult as other encounters really.

@Brian - don't think so. The archers are on the hills and there are traps around them from what I hear.

@vhatever - I can't answer that, because I don't know the quest lines very well yet since I'm playing for the first time.... but there's no indications on any of these quests at how hard they might be so it's complete guesswork. I guess I happened to choose a harder quest line but I don't seem to have any way to tell one way or the other.

@Akridine - I figured there might be 'cheat' or 'admin' commands like in other games, but I didn't know about them. I would prefer not to use them though as I think for obvious reasons.

What difficulty level are you playing at, what exactly is killing you so hard ? Which one of your party members dies first ?

That fight is a little more challenging than your average encounter, but it's not that bad, despite their numbers, all enemies in the encounter are ranked 'normal', which means you can dispatch each of them very easily.

I was around the same level when I was ambushed by Zevran. I don't remember exactly how I beat that one though. I do remember there were several fights that were a lot easier by focusing ranged fire from all characters on one enemy at a time, that can thin their ranks pretty quickly.

Well I got to level 9-ish when I am now at a point where I was at camp and whenever I try to travel anywhere from camp I get ambushed by a huge party lead by Zevran. There are way too many enemies for me to defeat no matter what tactics I use and no matter which party members I choose. It's completely and utterly hopeless. My game is completely ended and I am not happy.  There is no way for me to back up and choose a different path as it seems this ambush is hard-coded into the game and it always happens.  There are 11 enemies to defeat at once, and no chances to try to pick them off a few at a time or retreat. No options whatsoever other than to die.

I've crafted as many health potions as I can but it's simply not enough. I would need like 10 of them to survive this damn battle, and I just don't have that many.

This was not the first time that sometime similar to this happened in this game, but the first time I have zero options available. So I'm done with this game. Not fun when you hit a brick wall with no options left.

just because your a loser who cant win on normal dosent mean that the game is flawed. it means your flawed.

Yeah the Mage behind the frontal group of enemies was the most dangerous enemy for me. She cast a fireball.
