Get the mage first, that'll help a ton, also applies to many other upcoming battles. Also, have a healer mage and plenty of Lyrium potions, that is another key to success.

I had another random encounter with two yellow shrieks and a horde of genlock and hurlock archers, i had to stay in starting area and use bows to kill the archers that had noticed me while the shrieks were stuck in a barricade to win it, so there are a lot tougher battles before you.

...The 10 Shrieks that attack you in the deep roads from both sides is seriously going to ****** you off if you can't do this mate.

Hmmm, that is odd. I did this battle at level 11 and found it quite easy with Morrigan, Leliana and Allistair with my character as the Tank. I've auto leveled Morrigan and Allistair up from when I got them and pretty much just let the AI do it's thing with me occasionally taking over Morrigan to throw out a Winter's Blast or Disorient.

Admittedly I was also using the Dragonblood Plate at the time which is some pretty nice armour and also have a shield with the skill Shield Tactics which prevents enemies getting a flanking bonus.

I also tried to get Leliana behind targets helping me out because I use Threaten and Taunt which usually keeps them off her and she backstabs the begeebies out of them.

Edit : Nope, sorry, I did this at level 11. Maybe that was why it was easier for me.

it's just normal difficulty... my warrior(s) usually die first in the front lines because they get all the aggro first. Again, just to be clear, I get cut down so fast from mass attacks from 11 enemies that it seems all tactics are equally fruitless. By the time my dog even gets near a group of enemies to stun them, my party is already at half health from the spells & ranged attacks.

I think the only way I beat it the first time was after all my other teammates had died and it was me and my main character (s&b war) and about 40 potions, both lesser and normal. Alternate eating them, and I was able to solo the last 6 guys. This was on Hard, by the way.

I'll agree with the OP that the difficulty curve could definitely use some work. I should not find an ally fight more challenging than *all* of the boss fights, nor should I find a pack of wolves the most challenging thing in the game.

And that is one of the main issues I have. I only have 5 potions left and this is after buying out all the ingredients and crafting as many as I can. I can't get any more potions before I have to fight this battle, which is why I'm stuck.

Try getting you mage to use disabling spells on the archers and most importantly the mage. I hit the Mage with everything Morrigan had to take them down asap. Then I got her to work on the archers with Winter's Blast and other debuffs, Allistair also went for them while myself and Leliana worked on most of the melee types. I only used two healing salves but once again i think that's because I built him as a pure damage soaking tank.

Do you have any group stun spells to handle the frontal bunch of enemies to give you a bit of time? Even Mind Blast is a 3 second group stun. Also have the fighters use their stun or knockdown talents.

I agree that the enemy Mage is a hassle, as well as worrying about everything else.

Have some potions ready to heal early.

Have you tried turning it down to Easy for just this one fight? It's got to be better than banging your head bloody against a brick wall. And if turning the difficulty down grates against you too much, try turning it down to Easy and using the Easy attempt(s) as practice run(s) until you figure out a strategy, then doing it again on Normal?

I wish you luck, with whatever you choose to do.

You should be able to return to the last location prior to entering camp without traveling across the map.

So that may give you an opportunity to stock up on potions.

@SeanMurphy2 - No I don't have an option. No matter what I do this battle occurs unless I back up to a fairly old saved game. It doesn't matter what my destination is.

I finally just gave in and changed the difficulty setting to "easy" and got through the battle with no problems at all. I still submit my original issue as having "very little options" to the game development team and I stand by it. I should not have have had so many issues on this one battle.... again even if my battle tactics were flawed there should have been some way to get out of this and take a slightly different path without losing a TON of time.

The packs of wolves can be extremely challenging, because there is a lot of them and they have some feats that can really kick the crap out of your players.  But while the pack of wolves is not a "boss fight", but it is a special encounter.  And depending on your party make up it could either be very easy or very hard.  IMO this is the charm of the game.

Oh, and if you think it's the most challenging thing in the game, then you either got a lot better, or got your characters some hack-roids! Image IPB

Throw your dog at the mage to kill her before she can do major damage. If you have overwhelm, point it at any normal mob and they're dead. Don't ever turn your back on Zevran (...). If you can get melee opponents into a tightly packed group, throw a bunch of grenades at them. Also don't forget to shield bash / pummel / dirty fight people early in the fight to disable them. Try not to be exposed to all archers at the same time, there is a broken wagon in the middle of the area if I remember correctly, this can shield your entire party from a half of the enemy archers.

Oh yeah, also two-handed warriors suck, but that's just my opinion.

HAHA!

You wrote your gripe without bumping down the difficulty first? And you're complaining the Gameplay is flawed because of this?

I'm so tired of the Bethesda-style feed you easy repetitive battles that are designed not the challenge you.

Yes. You get ambushed. It happens. A dozen people got together and studied on killing you and thought up a plan. You're supposed to die.

It's kinda wonky - since it's pretty obvious you're walking into ambush (but it's actually a bone from the devs to allow you to buff precombat). They could have just started the ambush cutscene with the log falling on you, you know???

Please don't take this the wrong way, because it is not an insult.

But do you seriously believe the problem was with the developers.  I mean of the plethora of things that you could have done wrong from spec'ing your characters horribly, to not knowing how to use them...  The developers still gave you an out.  The easy button!

Thats right.  It's there for you.  That is why they added it!  Because the developer knew there would be some people that would not know how to pass certain things.  And so they created this option so you could proceed further into the game, by pressing a button.

But you're right!  The developers should have gone further, they should have put a max limit of three re-logs and then forced you to use the easy button so you would not have wasted so much time.

Well, well – see now you simply cannot pause before the ‘overwhelms’ – typical ‘bouncing cat’s hex‘ in action.

Fortunately you still can donate some cat food to the chantry to have your gameplay fixed.

I am glad you got through it.

Though there will be other frustrating battles where you start in open alley, surrounded or heavily outnumbered. It is a tough game. So if you are feeling frustrated just drop the difficulty.

I never had any problems on my mage, a little Cone of Cold then lightning on Zevran always seems to do it.

I know I'm repeating myself here but that fight (OP) was a lot easier for me in Nightmare than it was in Hard. Just get the mage down first (focus fire) while trying to keep others busy, fighting their checks against an area spell... It should go smooth from there...

I had my 2 hander, Wynne, Morrigan and Leliana in that fight but I also use my 2hander, Alistair, Sten and Shale (Oghren later on prolly) for a all guys night out fun... in nightmare club... (I had them vs Trickster's random encounter and I think it was harder than Zev's)

Well, don't be too discouraged. I'm playing on hard and I try not to rely on potions very much at all. That's not saying some fights didn't take many many tries to beat, but I'm stubborn, and I really like playing the game so I'm in no hurry to get to the end. I also haven't had the wolf problem... yet.

I've spent a lot of time replaying battles just to practice different tactics. It took me a while to figure out what works and what doesn't with my party but it's really paid off. Sometimes I just watch carefully and see what or who is causing the most damage, and then deal directly with those threats first. If I can do any ranged damage before melee reaches me I will. I use anything that increases damage (poisons, traps etc.). I have 2 rogues in my party, so right off the bat 2 enemies get slowed up by dirty fighting, then one gets double back-stabbed while Alistair bashes from the front. Morrigan usually takes a third out for a few seconds with Winter's grasp. Alistair, Leliana and I will then finish him off as well, and so on. At that point if I'm being crowded I use mind blast or something similar, pull everyone back and use an acid flask or other AoE attack to weaken them further, then focus all offense on the enemy with the least health. Most of my fights are a variation on this strategy, it doesn't always work, but this game would be pretty boring if it did.
