Did the Ardat-Yakshi seriously get retconned or something?

Retcon to make banshees. Yes its very stupid as now Samara looks like an idiot. A 1000 year old Justicar who has Ardat-Yakshi who is ignorant on what she's talking about.

Actually, I just remembered something!

Samara also says something about Asari living in remote worlds and how there maybe Ardat Yakshi living there. So what she said doesn't preclude the existence of more Ardat Yakshi.

But it still doesn't make sense she didn't mention the existence of a monastery full of Ardat Yakshi.

It's made very clear that the Asari lie about (withold the truth) about the existence of them so other species will not know.

But... why would Samara lie, when she's telling us about their existence at all?

IIRC, the Asari soldier with PTSD on the hospital in the Citadel had a squad mate who is an Ardat-Yakshi. Shouldn't she be locked up in some monastery too?

Retcons in a Mass Effect game? Surely you jest.

They needed Banshees... but for some reason didn't want to make the actual Asari into them.

I don't really blame ME3 for this one because they were already really inconsistent about it in ME2 (see the Codex and the ambient dialogue). Really, I think either someone just forgot about Samara's "only three" line, or that was something they changed their mind about too late to fix, so they just decided to pretend she never said it.

Samara says "I have three children, and three Ardat-Yakshi are in existence today. It is as it seems."

However, she also talks about it being a rare condition but the codex in ME2 explains that it's not as rare as the asari would have you believe. It seems unlikely that Samara would lie, so maybe it's an omission of the full numbers, or she herself doesn't know.

I think that only people with the full blown disease (ie the ones that kill when they mate) are actaully called Ardat Yakshi, the others have the disease to a lesser degree, because the disorder is said to be a spectrum disease like Autism you could have many that fall on the lighter side of things, but still have to go to the monestary because they can seriously injure thier mates.

I'm so confused with the Ardat-Yakshi Monastery. I thought that according to Samara, there were only 3 Ardat-Yakshi in existence, and all 3 of them were her daughters.

Now we have a monastery full of them, and the codex entry makes even less sense?

The monastery was mentioned in LotSB.

Referring to Banshees, the codex says that any Asari with latent Ardat-Yakshi powers (i.e. not evident) could be made into banshees. Therefore many seemingly normal Asari could be made into banshees. This doesn't explain why other Asari mention more than 3 Ardat-Yakshi though; perhaps there are varying degrees of the disease.

I figure that there are three "known" Ardat-Yakshi to Samara in ME2, because one escaped and killed, so she and her sisters got labeled as such.

And if "Purebloods" have a higher possibility in having Ardat-Yakshi traits, I figure that there are plenty of Asari that could carry the traits without being dangerous themselves (they just have a higher chance of having children that could express those dangerous genes), thus why Asari want to meld with non-Asari I figure.

Then learning about a Top Secret Monastery in ME3 when contact is lost with it, is not a retcon IMHO, maybe shoehorning but not a retcon and Samara's two children did need a place to stay under house arrest for the better part of like ~300 to ~400 years chasing Morinth down.

And I just thought of how eerie Morinth's comment about being the Asari's Genetic Destiny after encountering Banshees...

Edit: Well in the Trivia section, there's mention of dialogue related to the Monastery, masseffect.wikia.com/wiki/Ardat-Yakshi

Actually, the quote Samara says is, "As far as I know, only three exist. Two chose a life of seclusion. The third ran." Samara only knows about the existence of three Ardat-Yakshi because she personally knows three of them.

I also remember her saying something along the line that she either hadn't visited her daughters since taking her oaths or something along that line with a specific time like a few hundred years since the youngest escaped. So if she didn't visit the place then it is unlikely she would know the current number since the Asari want to keep quiet about them.

Don't have a reference to this however as its taken from memory so might be wrong.

Hi Im going to pretend Im a Bioware dude.

Ok people is it too hard to believe that these Ardat-yakshi some may hide.. Lets do some math..

Lets say that the total population that could Be Ardat-Yakshi is only .01%. Lets give a nice number of say 5 billion total population for the whole race (lowball number but it proves a point). That would mean that a possible 50 Million.  Now lets say they found and killed a nice round number of 90% of them. Still leaves 5 Million that could be hiding or what not.. Even if you cut it below 1%.. When your talking about Billions in population, the rare,, suddenly become not so rare. :)

And the fact that the Asari Homeworld is Invaded... All a sudden having to fight oh what 20 or so of these things not so hard to believe now.

If my math is off sorry. But I think you get the point.

Bioware Off..

Malkuth talking.. That was a stupid explanation Malkuth Version of Bioware.

I think this is a case of unreliable narrator embodied by Samara. She either deliberately lied, or was in ignorance.

Especially since the ME2 codex is contradictory to Samara's claim.

In some... earlier, unfinished revisions of Mass Effect 3's plot, I believe that Samara's daughters are still the only 2 that are known to exist, and rather than performing Husk conversion, the Reaper's were using one of her daughters as a Banshee... factory. Dark stuff.

That... might have been a bit too disturbing for the tastes of some. Maybe it pushed the boundaries of an M rating. Maybe it was lost in a sea of dialogue and plot revisions, and corrected at the last minute with a retcon.

Or perhaps Samara was lying to Shepard about a lot of things, under the strict rules of the Justicar code.

I doubt we'll ever see a concrete answer. Choose your own adventure, as usual.

From what I've gathered about this topic is that any Asari with latent Ardat-Yakshi genes can be turned into Banshee's.

As far as Samara knows, there are currently only two asari who have bloomed into "true" Ardat-Yakshi. The other asari at the monestary are those who have latent AY genes, but have not yet bloomed, but it's always possible that while Samara was chasing down Morinth, a few of those students AY genes became active.

Whatever the case, it doesn't sound like Bioware pulled this out of thin air, because after talking to Samara, I wondered how many asari carried latent AY genes. We got our answer, a lot. The asari population, as being one of the first races in this cycle to achieve space flight, is bound to be in the trillions, possibly in double digits. Even if the asari only had a population of one trillion, if like 1% of the asari population carried latent AY genes, that's well over a billion asari who are possible candidates for becoming Banshee's.

Ardat-Yakshi is a genetic disorder that is mostly latent. In our world there are tons of genetic disorders out there, and the vast majority of people with those genetic disorders are latent.

Samara's actual line is something like, "I have three daughters, there are three Ardat-Yakshi in existence.  It is as it sounds."

I guess that doesn't technically mean that those three are the only ones, but the way she words it really makes it sound like that's what she means.

Do you realize how utterly stupid that reasoning sounds? There's an entire monastary dedicated to "housing" them and she's only aware of three so that's how many she says are in existance? Hell I have never been to a prison to meet anybody, but guess what? I know there are lot of prisoners there. I have never been to a Buddhist monastary and met any monks, but I know there are a lot of Buddhist monks out there.

Wait, I forgot about that line and that doesn't make any sense.  She knows that two of her daughters went to monestary.  Did she think it was empty?  Did they not have a pamphlet saying, "We at AY Monestary are proud to provide our service to over 100 handycapable asari" or something like that.

It's just nebulous enough that it can be termed an evasion.

Personally, I prefer it with a monastery full of the things.  The idea that the only three AY in existence are Samara's daughters just doesn't make sense given the other information that we see.  For instance, the Eclipse mercenaries know what an AY is, even if they only thought them scary stories to frighten Asari children.  And Aria appears to have seen the results of an AY's "handiwork" before.  In short, ME2 strongly implied that Samara's children weren't the only AY in existence.
