Did the Ardat-Yakshi seriously get retconned or something?

From what I remember the monastery is supposed to be a well kept secret and is well hidden in the mountains, who's to say Samara didn't know? Maybe she just wanted to keep it the way it was, a secret.

I suppose it still works with the whole "latent" bit. The Asari don't seem to actually understand what creates an Ardat Yakshi, only that it happens just with pure blood Asari. I got the feeling that there is enough misinformation/lack of information that it was fairly flexible.

The AY scale was mentioned in ME2. In fact, I believe the codex entry for ME3 was directly lifted from ME2s.

Likely there is a difference in status, but no different terminology. Samara is referring to Ardat-Yakshi as anyone who possesses the trait in an active form and strong enough to kill their partners through mating. Of those, there are only 3. However, plenty of others hold it in a powerful latent form, or do not kill, but still possess the gene and the trait.

Even those who do not kill with their ability might have been sent to the monastery, if they are deemed to great a threat.

Yes. She did. Explicitly.

This annoyed the heck out of me too. I planned on making a thread about it when I got that quest but wanted to wait until I'd finished the ending so that I wouldn't get spoiled for things. Of course, by the time I got the ending this suddenly seemed less important...

Yeah, by the time I finished it seemed like I had bigger complaints than this, but the whole monastary thing drove me nuts!

When a Codex entry begins "Contrary to popular belief..." what they're really saying is, "so remember that thing we told you earlier? Yeah, we're retconning that. Oh, and banshees! Enjoy!"

I think this is a case of unreliable narrator embodied by Samara. She either deliberately lied, or was in ignorance.

Especially since the ME2 codex is contradictory to Samara's claim.

Somehow I doubt Samara Lied

To those still debating whether or not she said there are only 3, just watch the YouTube video already posted on page 1:

She absolutely DOES say that only 3 exist.

Ardat Yakshi are not rare, they are just not talked about in Asari society. They are the Asaris dirty little secret, like a rich person's illegal gardener.

so far as Samara knows, her kids are the only ones, based on what the conversation went

Remember the Asari in the hospital at the beginning she was having a conversation with a Asari doctor about having a gun.
She was asked if she was afraid of the humans since she wanted to be isolated from them.
She said that isn't why she wanted the gun, then was scared her eyes had changed and was asking what color her eyes where.

It's probably like any genetic disorder and has many different levels. Some may not even know they have it.

Shepard: You said this is genetic. How many children do you have?
Samara: Three. And three Ardat-Yakshi are in existence today. It is as it sounds.

Quoted word-for-word, directly from the scene in ME2.

Samara in ME3 does say that there are only 3 AY in existence, but in another conversation she also says that there may be more than she does not know about (specifically in reference to her going on an AY hunting spree after taking out the Collectors).

Further, the Monastery holds not only full-blown AY, but also those with latent AY genes. In other words, if Samara hadn't been a Justicar she would have been forced to live in one of those monasteries (since she obviously has latent AY genes, what with giving birth to three AY daughters).

Exact quote:

Shep: You said this is genetic. How many children do you have?
Samara: Three. And three A-Y are in existence today. It is as it sounds.

I guess it can also be construed as Samara stressing the point that all of her daughters were in indeed A-Y. I'm not too bothered by it even if they changed the lore. It's utterly dwarfed by the main problem with the game.

The people sayins Samara doesnt say that there are only 3 Ardat-Yakshi are wrong. Sorry don't mean to be rude but you guys are just wrong.

Her exact words are that there are only three ardat-yakshi in existance, and she has three daughters. then she pauses and says "it is as it sounds".

There you go.

I just kind of headcanon it that the entire monastery was just built for those two girls. Everyone else was staff.

Wait isn't that the equivalent of going

Me:
You said this is genetic. How many children do you have?

Random: Three. And three Down Syndrome kids are in existence today. It is as it sounds.

That doesn't mean that only three AY exists in the entire galaxy.... Only that Samara had three kids and all three were bad etc. :?

A single Asari was responsible for the creation of THREE AY. That's pretty bad...

I also agree with the people I don't find this too troubling even if it's an inconsistency, changing it doesn't alter anything about the story really.

Samara had to tell you about the fact that there were Ardat-Yakshi because she needed help with Morinth. She told you about her daughters for that reason. However she is a living 'icon' of asari law and justice more or less. It is illegal to divulge the true facts about the Ardat-Yakshi, so she only said as much as she needed in order to capture Morinth. Thus she can 'bend' her code, but not break it.

She says "As far as I know only 3 exist today, 2 chose to remain in isolation, the other chose to run"

looked up the conversation on youtube to see what she said.
