Stupid question.

When Ashley is first sent to the hospital, I figured one or two of the gifts could have been for Ashley, but I wasn't sure about the rest. So I bought everything thinking I might be able to give gifts to other companions like Dragon Age. Then comes the first conversation with Ashley in the hospital and Shepard gives a book to Ashley via auto-dialogue... no indication which book it was. The game doesn't even give you a choice what to give her.

My question is, how do I know it was the correct book? And not just the last one I purchased? Ashley basically said "Thanks, that was sweet", or something and that was the end of the conversation. And does it really matter to the romance if it was the incorrect gift?

I went with the Tennyson book. Don't know if that was the right call, but my advice is to stay away from anything impersonal. ie. flowers, candy

It's the Tennyson book. He wrote the poem her father loved that she recorded for him every time he shipped out.

There's a kiosk at the hospital with a bunch of books, flowers, chocolate, etc.

Just for the VS when they're in the hospital. Giving it to them helps build their regard for you in the stand off at the end of the coup mission. Oddly enough There's a whole bunch of stuff you can buy for Ashley (though the Tennyson book is the right choice), but only a bottle of whiskey for Kaidan.

She didn't seem all the that thankful to me, maybe she's tired of Tennyson. Heh.

Okay... you guys didn't read my post. I know which book is correct. But I was stupid and bought ALL of the gifts thinking they would have some purpose later on. But how do I know I gave the correct one to Ashley? The game gave a book to her via auto-dialogue and there seems to be no way to tell what it is. It could have been the Asari book for all I know.

I gave her no book... and she still turned her gun on Udina.

What exactly is the factoring for this decision?

Question... If VS does turn their gun onto Udina and you dont take the Renegade interrupt to prevent Asari Councilor from being shot... does VS gun him down in your stead?

Yes. If you don't take the renegade interrupt the VS kills Udina. As to what factors into the decision, it's the gift, plus some of the conversation on Mars. If you get defensive about your time with Cerberus rather than assuring them you're not with them anymore, then they have doubts about whether they can trust you. Also, I think whether or not the salarian counselor survives also factors into it.

Udina can be saved? Mind you, I wanted that bastard dead since the coup started (well maybe sooner :) ), but still...

I don't think so. I think either Shepard shoots him or the VS does.

Shep takes the flowers and chocolate to the Normandy for himself, obviously.
