One of the things that really stood out to me was the fact that when you were finally headed towards the Beam to get into the Citadel, you pretty much only saw humans and Turians regardless of how many species you got to join the battle.
This is how the last few stages before the final run to the Beam should have gone down:
If you failed in getting a significant amount of support before the final last ditch effort on earth, the difficulty should have been cranked up to near impossible, with only a truly dedicated and skilled player managing to make it into the Citadel. As you gained support though, the difficulty should have been slightly toned down and the amount of baddies fought, decreased.
For example, if you managed to get the Geth to join you, there should have been a cutscene where some of those Brutes you had to face were forced into wrestling matches with some of those new massive type of red Geth. If you saved the Rachni queen, you should have seen the Rachni fighting Husks. The more allies you had on the ground, the more support in battle you would have had. You were even given a chance to save a group of Elcor warriors and I would have loved to see some Elcors with massive guns strapped to their backs charging towards the Reaper. Regardless though, because the default difficulty would have been cranked up so high, the final battle would still provide a satisfying challenge.
Furthermore, the less ground support you managed to achieve, the more of your team members would die in order to get Shepard closer to the Beam. Little cutscenes were you see one of your buddies sacrificing himself/herself would have added incentive to replay the game in order to make sure you have enough support so they don’t have to die. Imagine that when you were making a last ditch effort to run into the Beam, you see the Normandy flying straight into Harbinger and blowing up in order to buy you just a few extra seconds, Jokers last words being “You’re not doing this to me again commander”.
Just doing all of that would have added greatly to the replay value to the game, but I’m not done yet.
I thought the scene with TIM was done well enough and I was really touched with the Anderson and Shepard scene when they were like Father/Son/Daughter. I would keep that. In fact, I would have ended the game right after Anderson dies and Shepard looks at all the blood coming from his body on his hand.
At this point, the Crucible would simply shoot and destroy all Reapers. Keep in mind though that if you had NOT gained the most amount of support as possible, then Shepard would simply close his/her eyes and die, but if you had achieved perfect unity in the galaxy, then you see after the reapers are destroyed that some of Shepard’s crew come running into the Citadel and carry him out onto the Normandy in the med bay were doctor Chawkwa saves his life.
The Variety does not end here. I would have had added a nice epilogue where some closure is given. This epilogue would have taken place 5-10 years after the events of the games. You would see how Shepard’s romance played out fully and the effects your decisions have had on the galaxy. You would also see what has happened to all your friends, for example Garrus might have become a leader of his people (and thus be complaining about the daily drudge of politics).
I don’t know about you guys but I was kind of annoying when I decided not to have my anniversary drink with Dr. Chawkwa until after the battle and then it never happened. I would have liked to have seen that we were still having that same yearly drink even 5 years after the battle.
The variety in this Epilogue, if you even achieved it, would have been satisfying for everyone! Also you could have had a scene with Shepard talking to Hacket about what the reapers purpose truly was. The conclusion being, that whatever it was, it was beyond our comprehension (and thus leaving it a mystery for further dlc/games to explore).
But now you are saying to yourself “what about the petulant god child! We must have that petulant god child!” If we had to have that god child, this is what I would have done:
As you start to have the conversation with the god child, you argue and defend the united races. For every point the god child has, you give a counterpoint. History repeats itself?/ Look at Urdnot Wrex and Eve, they are changing the Krogan, creation will always destroy creator?/ Look at the Geth and Quarian now living in peace with each other and working together. The conversation would continue and now based on the decisions you have made throughout the series, you have a chance to win the argument. If you fail to convince the god child you are still left with the three basic options, but if you convince him he reveals a fourth option. This modified option would simply target all reapers, but keep the relays intact and save the now united galactic civilizations instead of leaving everyone stranded. Also this modified option would not blow up the station and Shepard would be rescued by his crew and of course the previously mentioned epilogue then happens).
Now, what about EDI? Throughout the final game you can encourage EDI to modify her core programing. I would think that because she had truly changed herself and had switched into a new body that she would be different enough from the reapers not to be effected by the final fourth option. I also think that after Legion sacrificed himself (after he had become a true indivudal) to change his brethren, it would have changed the Geth just enough to also survive (though some might disagree with me on this).
Whichever option you pick, both of these scenarios would have had a massive amount of variety as long as you added (*cough* DLC *cough*) an epilogue (hey Bioware that was directed to you). So ya, adding an epilogue could make this great.
Just my thoughts.
