Mass Effect 2 is by far the best game of the series does anyone else agree?

It's only in the last 10 minutes that ME3 ruins itself.

I would have loved to see a good epilogue. its like great the reapers are gone.... now what? what hapened next? i hope that we see a me 4 for that but with this ending I don't know that I want to especially when the options at the end are so drastic and it would make creating a new game based on the old choices very difficult.KotorEffect3 wrote...

thats kind of where I am at except that I only played ME 1 2 or 3 times maybe. I played ME 2 like 8 and I don't see myself finishing my imports to give each shepards story's an ending. What's the point they all die anyway.CrasVox wrote...
I still think ME2 is the best game of all time.
ME1 was great. I enjoyed it very much. Played it through many times. But when ME2 came out, and I was playing it, it knocked me away. It was amazing. Fantastic. Great characters, great locations, great story. And great replay value.
ME3....had some great moments, but on the whole, does not match up with ME2.
I don't think Shepard dying is what has most people riled up. I think it is losing the relay network and lack of epilogue that bugs most people.

easily the best dialogue and writing, that and the plot is consistant throughout the story.
ME2 sorta puts the plot on hold constantly for you to deal with your squadmates completely unrelated side-stories. kinda screwed up the pacing of that game to all hell. you sorta lose sight of the whole "collector threat" when you spend 10+ hours never dealing with them at all rofl.

This is how I feel. Granted I still would like a lot more sidemissions.

Best story goes to Mass Effect.
Both are far better than ME3 though.

By the time I completed my 2nd or 3rd play through of Mass Effect 2 there was no question in my mind about the best game I had ever played and to this day I'm still hard pressed to even consider putting a game above ME2. The fact that I can still start a play-through today and enjoy it more then first play throughs on recent AAA titles is mind blowing. Never has a game struck that perfect combination for me of being open world enough to take on the game how I saw fit yet provide enough depth to keep me captivated.
Usually games that are very open world have shallow stories and character development while games with deep stories are usually linear to the point where it's hard to play through them again. It's extremely difficult to strike that perfect balance but thats what ME2 did.
Doesn't have to be Mass Effect but I can only hope that one day another game comes along that makes me reconsider ME2 as my top choice. So when the OP says Mass Effect 2 is the best in the series I go one step further and call it my undisputed, leave everything else in the dust, best game of all time.

I thought the story was questionable from the moment they said we've had scientists here for decades, but we just now found these plans for a superweapom lying around, and just in the nick of time to.
Then the whole the crucible is very complex, but the plans are written in a way that make them easy to understand, so building the crucible isn't as tough as we though.
Then ultimately the ending.

ME2 sorta puts the plot on hold constantly for you to deal with your squadmates completely unrelated side-stories. kinda screwed up the pacing of that game to all hell. you sorta lose sight of the whole "collector threat" when you spend 10+ hours never dealing with them at all rofl.
See though thats why ME2 was great, at least for me. The focus was on character development. The collector threat was just an excuse to put these colorful characters into situations where you not only learned about them but were given the potential to mold them in a way that you saw fit. Also with ME2 while the recruiting and loyalty missions can be considered tedious I thought they were just another great example of focusing on character development coupled with the fact that the player was given a decent amount of freedom to choose what order I completed them. To me just the ability to choose the order alone is a big part of ME2's replayability.
With ME3 you go from one big mission to the next. Earth -> Mars -> Genophage -> Quarians -> Cerberus. And while you have access to side missions like Grissom Academy, Arrae (Jacob), etc they can easily feel disconnected from the main plot unlike the loyalty and recruiting missions which had a noticable impact on the Suicide Mission. My point being ME3 despite being open world and offering more freedom then 99% of games can easily feel linear in the worst possible ways. I also felt ME3 as a whole made character development a secondary priority focusing to much on the Reaper war, which might have been fine if we got to learn and interact more with the Reapers. Autodialog didn't help things.
Keep in mind Tuchanka and Rannoch blow away virutally every non-suicide mission in ME2 but ME2 has enough depth where for me even ignoring the endings I find myself hard pressed to rank ME3 above ME2 in everything but combat.
For me the perfect Mass Effect game would combines ME1's main conflict particularly since it had the best villan in Saren, ME2's focus on character development, and ME3's graphics and combat. If Bioware could do that they would just, well we'd hold on to a copy of that game forever.

Is the story the only thing that's important here? To me the combat really makes it hard to enjoy ME 1 as much as I would like to buy I really do like the story of ME 1. I did a playthough of it on Tuesday and started ME 2 yesterday after finishing a ME 3 playthough 2 weeks ago and I still feel ME 2 is the best in the series. Better characters in ME 2, great combat but combat is better in ME 3, ME 2 has a much better ending than ME 1, ME 2 has better voice acting and graphics than ME 1. ME 3 is great too but many people hate the ending. I personally choose not to acknowledge the ending that ME 3 shipped with because the EC is amazing and really ended the trilogy on a great note for me. I would even argue that ME 3 is the end best in the series over ME 1 which imo only thrives in story and Saren is the best villian in the series.KingZayd wrote...
