I actually think the scene with Kirrahe upset me more in a emotional/sad way. Thane is much more important to me, of course, but the dramatic ninjanyness just took away a lot of the shock/emotion. The fight scene was too drawn out, and sword>gun is silly to me.
When Kai Leng goes to do his fancy hand thing, he actually fires and then Kirrahee becomes uninvisible and falls at the Councilor's feet, blood coming from his mouth and stuff. He was standing in the space between the Councilor & KL and you never see him until he gets hit. Then KL jumps out the window. I thought the suddenness was more affective, personally. It seemed more no-nonsense and there were a lot less missing bullets fired and makes the lack of firing from Shep make more sense since KL is behind the Councilor, then he runs off. No real time to get him.
That is interesting.....and sort of depressing. I haven't seen the Kirrahe/KL encounter, but it seems (from your description), much more plausible of a situation. Which in turn, makes the Thane/KL fight seem even more overly staged (which it most certainly was).
There have been a few Thane lovers over the past few days who have posted some brilliant thoughts on this fight AND Thanes overall involvement in me3, and I believe the writers did more than forget about Thane's character and character arc. I think they actually didn't know nearly enough about him. All they did was find a way to
'shoehorn' his presence into this storyline/game. Dropping the ball is an understatement.
Some ways he could have added real interest to the game....... He was the only Drell we get to know in depth (well, if ya bothered...). Because he is a Drell, he has a connection to the Hanar. The Hanar have an entire religion based on the Protheans. Prothean connection to fighting the Reapers.
He is an assassin, considered one of the best. Potential connections (including maybe some unconventional ones that could have been fun to write about) from being an assassin, along with mad skillz that could have come in handy for different missions. And MOST importantly, if he is romanced or friended, he has his skills and council to aide Shepard in the forthcoming fight against the reapers; which he had offered to Shepard from the very beginning.
Not all character plots and sub-plots need to be tied so directly into the main plot. This adds texture and richness to a storyline (especially one set on rails).
And these are not even including just the LI connection, which should
never have been
dismissed. The choices, and character connections is what drives many of us to buy and play these games. Take those away, and the appeal to this game is..........(at least for me) none. Just my opinion, and my musings.
