one of my friends today said that she doesn't like romancing Thane because she feels like sloppy seconds and that he is too old.....WHAT?! Needless to say I nearly tore her a new one!
Image IPB

How old is Thane anyway in Mass effect 2? 40 or 39? Well that's young in my eyes! What the heck is wrong with people that they don't like someone who has been married before? Is it just Insecurity or what?

*ends angry rant*

I don't know why people say things like that. Thane is only 39 not 100.
I think for some people they just can't except the fact that Shepard wasn't Thane's first love. He had a life before he met her. I actually like the fact that he's older. Him having a wife never once bothered me. I also never felt that Shepard was any kind of replacement. for his wife. People who feel that way are really missing out on a great character.

Ugh. I think it's kinda worse if the other person never had a serious relationship before. Hell, even Jack had an actual relationship with someone before!

People seem to cling to that disney, destined for only one mentality, it seems... haven't people looked in the news lately? 50% of all marriages end in divorce in the US! There's nothing wrong (especially in the case of death) with moving on, sheesh...

I agree with you, I just really think they're being insecure with themselves, I mean if they honestly feel threatened by a wife who passed away than I just have no other explanation. They’re just a narcissistic type of person who has to be the 1# goddess of all time.
I’m sorry I feel very bitter right now! Image IPBImage IPBImage IPBImage IPB I guess my femshep needs a hug after Thane's romance....I need a hug.

His wife also died about ten years ago. It's not like she died yesterday.
I would have been more surpised if someone Thane's age had never had a serious relationship.

Yeah, Thane's a bit younger than me too. Yay for the old people!!! And for the other, why do people assume you are only allowed to love once in a lifetime. Maybe too much Twlilight...IDK.

Oh god please not Twilight! I would have far more scary nightmares than shep if I had to sit through all those movies. I had to sit through the first one and... and...I don't even.... never again

Go Team Thane!
Actually,Twilight is not just for teens. My sister is obsessed with it and she's...33  Yeah, she doesn't believe in anything but fairy tale endings. She can't read books or see movies where a character she likes dies. I can't imagine how she would have reacted if she played Mass Effect.

I don't like fairy tale endings but I did want a somewhat happy ending for Shepard and Thane and other LI's too.

I'm in the minority in that I was fine with -- and even aiming for -- a tragedy. This ties into the people who have issues that Thane was in love before... So was my Shepard. With Kaidan. Who she got killed for reasons that seemed PERFECTLY logical and gutripping at the time. Needless to say, the doomed soldier and doomed assassin had something going on. :P

I didn't get a tragedy, with consequences. I got a strong start. Then it choked and died into a quiet, slow, anticlimactic end. Really, Shepard? No tears? No talking about it? Nothing from Garrus or Edi or the Virmire survivor?

Yeah, I'm on Thane too :o  Now that I got that out of my system.  The rest of the stuff I read...

I'm glad Thane is old and the sloppy seconds part... lolololololol.   I guess I'm in real deep kimchi on this one, I'll be 39 this year and well, I'm a bit well past sloppy seconds.    Good thing I can laugh at myself.  And OMG Twilight, I have two girls ages 11 and 10.  Each one gladly ready to whip out the gloves and fight for their respective side.  And yes, one can love more than one in their lifetime.  Just ask me, I have and while some were painful, I'm glad they began and ended the way they did.  It led me to where I am now.

Age does play a role in who we romance.  I found the Carth romance in KOTOR and the Casavir one in Neverwinter Nights 2 unplayable; I played those games for the first time as a teenager.  The idea of romancing someone near 40, even if my character wasn't, gave me the serious creeps.  I'm 23 now and better at differentiating between character age and my age, but I still skew toward romancing younger characters.  It feels more comfortable for me as a player.

Still, the people who complain about Thane's age usually conveniently overlook Miranda.  She's 35, and has definitely had her fair share of partners

Team Thane for the win.

I have to admit though, I ended up watching the latest Twilight movie on Friday.... because my best friend made me. I HATED it. Spent the entire movie eating my cake and laughing at the size of whatshername's nose. Still don't believe I ever used to like it. SOOOOOO glad I grew out of it. And glad I don't live in the same city as my best friend because if I did she'd probably drag me to the next one. D:

I'm happy Thane had Irikah too. It never bothered me that he had a wife, or a son. It was just a new element that made up my smexy, intelligent drell. Shepard had a previous love, why shouldn't Thane?

Besides, people here are getting married in their early twenties, or even right out of high school! And considering their rate teenagers go through relationships, EVERYONE are sloppy seconds by the time they're 14!

I did the same thing with Kaidan! My Shepard had a thing going on with Kaidan which could well have blossomed into love (although she sounds like she wasn't as serious about it as your Shep was) and then when everything fell to pieces on Virmire, he took the initiative, set off the bomb and told her to get rescue Ashley - and she did. And she felt horribly guilty about it for the next two games.

I got her to romance Thane specifically because they both have a past, people they've cared about and lost (Shep is also a Colonist/Sole Survivor, so she's inherently tragic in a lot of ways). For both of them it wasn't about finding a Disneyesque, one-in-a-lifetime romance - it was about two soldiers suddenly waking up and realising they've found some measure of happiness in the most unlikely of places, and then clinging to it for all it's worth for as long as they can in less-than-ideal circumstances. I thought that was beautiful.

I also find it wierd that people have a problem with Irikah. Without her, Thane wouldn't even be the person he was. And since Irikah's influence on Thane was largely about him learning how not to be a soldier all the time, if she could look down and find out he'd spent the last ten years avoiding his son and being in battlesleep then I imagine she would have been absolutely dismayed. I just don't see how having Shepard reawaken the part of Thane that Irikah cultivated could be seen as a bad thing at all.

But yeah, I've been reading the posts above and it mystifies me, how some people seem to think sometimes! I mean, OK,Thane has got a past, and it's a sad, dark one in many ways; but it is also part of what makes him who he is, to know him is to know where he's been and what he's been through!

Thane's death scene at the hospital was just disappointing for me.
It was touching for both Shepard and Kolyat to be by his side in the last hour, but I just don't "get" the whole Thane dedicating the blessing/cleansing of souls for Shepard. My Shepard is a paragon, always, whereas Thane is an assassin for hire. Shepard constantly has to make moral decisions whereas Thane just explains his job with a pithy Cartesian split.
So for Thane to do that prayer dedication... it felt pretty arrogant on Thane's part.

Also, no opportunity to talk with other NPCs about Shepard's loss? Well, I suppose Commander Shepard is just a stoic robot...

I didn't feel that Thane's prayer was arrogant or meant as a judgment on Shepard's character. The prayer says her "heart is pure but beset with wickedness and contention" - so he acknowledges that while her intentions and actions are ultimately good, outside forces act upon her to force her to kill. She does violence to protect the innocent, and the people she kills deserve it, but that violence inherently weighs upon her. If you notice, he does not ask Kalahira to forgive her sins per se, but rather to guide her, to keep her on a true path.

That's my interpretation of it, anyway.

Thane is 38 according to the Mass Effect Wiki. Also, my grandfather was 19 years older than my grandmother when they were married, and he had been divorced before. When he died, she never found anyone else who could match up to him. Age is relative I think, and especially when it comes to guys like Thane. Mmmm...

Just a reminder everyone. If ya want to make your voice heard about how you think Thane’s romance went in ME3 (I wish there had actually BEEN a romance with him) PM me or post here!

http://social.biowar...ndex/10853184/4

I actually have 12 letters from Thane fans right now, out of a total of 42 letters, great job! That's the most letters for any LI so far, with Jack not so far behind. But I know there's a few people on this thread who haven't sent me a letter yet. What are you waiting for?

If you need help or ideas coming up with the letter, just remember, passionate, but polite! What did you like, what didn't you like? Were your expectations met regarding how you last saw Thane in ME2? How well do you think Thane was portrayed in ME3? What do you wish was done differently?

Deadline for letters is Thursday 9 PM (EST). Gotta PM it to me or post on the above thread by then so I can be sure it gets printed out!!

Don't listen to wiki. According to Bioware Thane is 39.

It's right here.

and I agree. Age is just a number. He isn't even that much older than Shepard.
I happen to love his age.

Thane is only 8 years older than her. It's NOT THAT BIG a difference. I know guys and girls who date people who are 10 years older and younger than they are.
