The worst part is we predicted this outcome. I remember the discussions in the Thane thread here on the ME3 board and the older Thane thread on he ME2 board. Many of us expressed our fear that if Thane's death was forced it would be done badly and no one would remember him. That's exactly what happened.

Were BioWare even listening? They hung up the "Cure Thane" banner in their office. They promoted it. Were they just humoring us? I still cannot fathom why they did what they did to Thane's character or his romance arc.

I think noone will ever see through it.... For me it feels like a new guy came to the biiiiiiiiiiig writing team who never heard about the story of Thane in any way, they just told him shortly what the character is about: his illness, and metioned in a further sentence: and btw. the guy was an LI too, so just throw some sentences in for that case too. And then this guy was thinking: I will do a great job and give him that heroic ending so that he do not have to get killed by his illness! - great job. I mean I can't even be angry at him since I get the feeling the people who actually wrote his story just didn't know it any better. It have to be like this. Everything else would just be.... unbelieveable... <_<

@Visii - remember the discussion we had about whether or not Shepard would show emotion if Thane died? Well, we got our answer. It's weird because the leaked script kind of alludes to tears but the final version we got in game was emotionless. They changed the script for the worse.

Leaked Script:
Shepard:I'll get some medical help.
Thane:I know all the experts on the Citadel. Ran diagnostics two weeks ago. I asked what they recommended at this late stage.They said, "spend time with your family."
Shepard:Looks like I'm all you've got.
Thane: I can think of no one better, siha.Your memory is not like mine, but perhaps you can keep me in it for a little while.
Shepard: You're not an easy person to forget, Thane.
Thane:The moment will be soon. [Coughing fit.] I shouldn't have run. You did not even need me.
Shepard: You fought for something noble, Thane. As last moments go, it's not a bad one.
Thane:No... there is one I would prefer.[Thane memory flashback.] Fist slams the table. Shame at my cowardice, my fear. Atonement means nothing.Her hand touches mine. Her lips part and I tremble. "Thane, be alive with me tonight."
[His body relaxes. Shepard wipes her eyes. Maybe we see a tear, maybe we don't. The music tells us all we need to know.]
Shepard: Goodbye, Thane. Meet you across the sea.

It pains me to admit it but I prefer the leaked script version of his death.

@yamainu The leaked script makes me think the person responsible had to be familiar with Thane's ME2 romance arc since the old scene has Thane reference the love scene before he dies. For some weird reason it was changed. I just don't get it. Instead of making it better, they made it worse.

the leaked script might be *better* but it would still have ruined the enjoyment of the game for me,  all I wanted was a choice, without choices the games broken for me.  They didn't need to kill him off like that, they did it to save money/resources because they could, and because they seem to have stopped caring about their female fans

@Julia_xo: Thank you for posting this again! I think I just oversee it in all the other posts... But well yes indeed, this person must have had an idea of the romance in ME2.... Better than the stuff that we got at least, but I agree (I am sure like any of yours here) with wildannie... It still ruins the game for us Thanemancers

I agree with you Annie - I loved the CHOICE that the game allowed, but it was basically removed entirely in ME3.  I really need to have them write some Thane DLC.  It would just mean playability for me.  I could bring through my Liara/Thane "cheat".

It's very sad that your worse predictions came true. I wasn't around then since I started playing the games in Dec. of last year but I really thought Thane was going to be able to survive so I wasn't worried about it. Then my heart was crushed...so here I am.

But we have to keep fighting. I care about the endings, but the only way I can really enjoy the game and re-play it once again, is by having a better romance and/or more Thane. I don't care if my Shepard dies at the end if Thane is already gone.

agree, seriously thought we would get to cure him, then they stab us in the heart....repeatedly.
and I don't want to see liara's face before i die..Thaneless..

@wildannie I agree with you. I wanted a choice and I still do. They said Thane was created to appeal to female gamers. They succeeded. I don't know why they forgot about their female fans in ME3 but hopefully we can remind them that we exist and that we still love Thane. I'm still hoping for DLC.

That line is SO   Just goes to show that they ABSOLUTELY thought of Thane as a "one night stand".  Good GAWD.  This makes me want to RAGE all over again.  Forgotten.  Discarded.

It shows their level of sadism.  Poor Thane, writes a letter to Shep in the event of his death.  He even says "I love you" in it and I imagine that could not have been easy for someone to do after closing themselves off for so long.  Then they take that and make Shep sound like a horny wench.  A dying man, give him love and a reason to want to live, then kick him hard in the balls.  Yeah, I stick by the word sadistic.

At the very least the prayer from Thane to Shepard was absolutely tear-jerking.

Not that it justifies Thane's role in any way whatsoever.
