Agreed. It's erks me more and more when I think about how cheated femshep was in ME3. I felt like I was being punished. I thought Bioware was THE developer that was going to change things for female gamers, but I can't trust that anymore. I'm so sad. ME1 and ME2 made me so happy and proud to be placed on an equal level as male gamers and ME3 just crushed me.

Everyone I talk to, including male gamers, note to me on how it seemed like Bioware hated girl gamers in ME3. The fact that they destroyed 2 straight femshep LI's made the game entirely un-rewarding. It wasn't fun. It felt like some kind of torture-fest because things just kept going down this spiral of misery- "Let's see how miserable we can make you, ladies!" My shep was alone at the end and it was nothing, but depressing.

I'm happy for those that enjoyed Kaidan and Garrus, but those LIs just aren't for all of us- not as a main LI anyway.

Ugg!!! *Back to depressing work while thinking about depressing Mass Effect*

Female Shepard is an empowering character to play as a female gamer. I was bowled over by the care and tenderness taken with Thane's character in ME2. I really felt that Thane was written with female gamers in mind. And, then ME3 happened......

Female Shepard was forgotten on so many levels and made to suffer like no character before her and unlike her male counterpart.

Thane ripped from her with no hope of changing his fate.

Jacob taken away.

Kaidan questions her every move to the point that Shepard starts questioning herself and who she is. This amazing woman is torn down by her "friend." Or, alternately, he is just dead from the Virmire incident.

Garrus (who is amazing) is only available if that was the choice made in ME2.

I don't understand what the thinking was where Female Shepard's love interests and choices were concerned.

Female Shepard was sort of 'happy accident' in Mass Effect.  When they created the incarnation of Shepard, they gave both male and female the same content (except romances and some lines here or there).  What this produced was a strong female character, who wasn't judged by her gender.  There was no limit to what you could do or how much ass you could kick.

She became the next Ellen Ripley (who was originally written to be a man).  It was refreshing and wonderful to see a female character who wasn't written as a cliche or constrained to certain roles.  She's a PERSON, who happens to be an N7 marine (and savior of the galaxy), that we can mold to our preferences with so many options.

I honestly don't know what happened to that in Mass Effect 3.  They uplifted Female Shepard in advertising, only to destroy her in the game.  To be honest, I blame whoever was in charge for making all these decisions and blatantly cutting her content because they believe people play Male Shepard more.  It's just an all-around jerk move.  There's too much in this game that seemed like a purposeful slap in the face to so many fans.  It's hard for me to sit back and think 'Oh, well they didn't have time to finish it' or 'This is thoughtful and compelling, anyway'.  I can't come to a logical set of reasoning that explains why they did all these things.

I believe it was a combination of not knowing what the fans actually wanted (which was easy enough to find by reading a few character threads), not giving a damn about what the fans actually wanted... and perhaps a bit of overconfidence/ego that whatever they did would be considered gold, regardless.

All I know, is what they did with both Thane and Jacob (and to some extent the others) was atrocious.  I also felt like whoever wrote them had no idea what they were like as characters, nor did they examine their romance content.  It's the same kind of ignorance flying around about the fact that 'Thane's death was fine', but they have no idea what his romance story arc is like.

"Satisfying conclusion to all the romances".

My ass.

I just wanted to step in and say:

Thank you! thanks to all the contributors! You are really amazing and made me cry today ;) I thought for myself at the beginning of this whole thing: if we would get at least 100 pages - we can call it a book at least. Then I saw how it grew and grew, and I thought we could in fact hit 200 pages - overwhelming for me at this point. And then these last 3 days came... We got about 295 pages ONLY contributions, so the Fanbook itself will have wbout 310 - 320 pages I think! THIS is a really HUGE book at all xD I really am concerned a bit how they should ship it to the US this thing will be heavy like hell I think xD

So there is nothing more to say for me than: Thank you again! Thane united people in this project who came to me and told me they thought that they would never take part in something like that, but well, just to protest how this incredible character was treated anything is possible :)

I am sure that Bioware can't oversee this 300 pages huge book anymore...

320 PAGES! Wow. That book is going to be monstrous. That's going to speak pretty loudly for Thane's cause, I think. Wish I could see them open the package and the look on their faces. BTW, if you need donations for shipping costs or whatnot, let me know.

*.* Thank you so much for the offer :) Perhaps I will come back at it, since I really have no plan how much the shipping will be ;) Perhaps I am going to send me along with it - just to make sure that Casey himself will get it and read it! HA! That's a plan! Little old Dani is sitting there in front of Casey Hudson and tells him to read it! Every single word of it! And then I will just hug him as long as he says: yes we will definately doing a download content for you guys and you get your cure! If something like that happens you have to make a cake Beanie! xD

I just wanted to direct all you ladies attention to this Journal post I found the other night on DeviantArt
http://metal-dragon-...aming-295604646
Here it is copied and pasted for ya all
START
If you do just one thing today, read this article - [link]

I won't post the whole thing here, but the issue can be summed up with this quote from the above article: "The truth is that games are sexist in their depiction of women to a depressing degree. I raised the point on a press trip dinner last year: how many female characters can you think of that aren't obviously designed to be sexually attractive to men? Apart from Shepard, no one around the table could suggest a single one."

I've made my thoughts on this issue very clear before, and taken some flak along the way for it - but it has got to stop. Is there anything wrong with wanting to make characters look attractive? Of course not. But the ridiculous degree to which female characters are sexualised is not going away - and if anything - getting worse. Take Ashley Williams for example - in ME1 she was a tough as nails soldier - the only Soldier class character you got, in fact - wore heavy armor, and her hair up in a bun. Fast-forward to ME3 and her newly designed outfit is a ridiculous catsuit-esque monstrosity that ME1 Ashley wouldn't be seen dead in, and even in combat her hair is all over the place and she's caked in make-up. Sure, she got some armor - but it's just a re-used FemShep asset, while Kaidan got freshly designed unique armor.

And the worst part? A lot of people can't even understand that there's anything wrong with that. I get so many comments on posts like this with people saying "Eh, I don't care, she's sexy" - that is exactly the problem - they don't care because they get to oggle a video game character.

If you're watching a romance scene, then of course the character is going to be sexualised - but if they're on the battlefield, then for crying out loud why are they wearing heels?
END

Oh and yes here was my comment I posted on it. Less about FemShep, but more about how I hated the over the top new female character designs in ME3.
START
So am I the only dude who despised Ashley's new look in ME3? Because I did, she hardly resembled the Ashley I knew. It was like she had a ****load of BOTAX, and plastic Surgery along with butt implants and boob implants.

Hell if I'd been told it was Miranda's new sister I'd have bought it. That's how much of a departure her look was from the Ashley I knew.

Oh and don't get me started on how her skin got lighted up, and they piled on the make up.

And whille I'm at it I may as well point it out that Liara's new boobs looked so odd and out of place with the rest of her body. She had these tiny little chicken arms and legs, a tiny waist and then, what the hell I may as wall say it like I see it, her boobs looked deformed really, really deformed like almost square boobs.

I swear some idiot sat down and just decided to stretch Liara's boobs and pixels to make them bigger and it only made them look deformed.

There no sugar coating, just like I see it, and I don't see anything at all appealing with Liara's new deformed boobs, and Ashley's ruined look.

More is less, not more is best. And bigger is not better, leave the boobs alone they don't need to get bigger in each game. Liara's boobs were perfectly fine in ME1.

But then again I happen to be in the minority of American dudes and am not a fan of fake boobs and all sorts of plastic surgery.

All I came here to do was look at some artwork and ended up sharing my 2cents worth on this matter.
END my comment.

The whole running around in combat in heels boy I hate that when I'm trying to play a serious game. Which is why I have Malificent, she's a royal witch and ridiculously over the top. She wears the Aria outfit with heels and makes everyone around her in combat wear clothes that stand out. Reminds me of Demonica my beyond evil dalish elf who goes around wearing Morrigan's robes in combat. She also gets mad at Zevran sometimes and takes his armor off and makes him fight like that. Yeah, funny when you have the nude body mods, not so when the kids are up.

When I saw Ashley's redesign I was like..."Are we fighting a war or auditioning for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition?" Miranda was presented to me already wearing that cat woman suit so I just shrugged it off, then put her in the alt appearance and Jack too. C'mon at least wear something that looks like it belongs on the battlefield. I would not shake my head so much if they were fair about it. What..we get Thane in that suit that basically leaves very little to the imagination. But just Thane? If you are going to sexualize my squad then even it out. Show off Jacob (I don't want to see it but let's be fair). Garrus, Zaeed, Kasumi, why not just put Joker in boxers and have him sitting up in the cockpit just like that.

I also noticed that while detained for 6 months by the Alliance that my FemShep got a boob job. Really? Nice to know that instead of worrying about reapers they were fixing her boobs. Lovely. I can write off the difference between ME1 and ME2, she had to be rebuilt and Miranda figured to fill her out some.

And I would paint myself green, blue, purple, red...just about any color, I have body paint. Yeah, it's not what you think. I go see ICP when they perform at Northern Lights. Totally innocent.

Hey guys!

Due to my last art piece that I produce regarding a no option for Thane, I was hit with an overwhelming response to it and I was convinced to produce a poster to send to Bioware.

I made one which everyone can praticpate in, so please come over to the thread and if ya are interested, send me your personal message! The quicker I can get the poster filled out, the sooner I can send it to Bioware! :)

I was just thinking, why are is the Drell race shrugged off so much in ME3, and even in ME2. The fact that the Krogan were dying out is such a big deal in the series, but the fact that there are very few Drell left and most of them have terminal illnesses seems to not be of much concern to anyone.. it can't have gotten to the point where there is so little of them left that no one cares, right? They are still people..

Edit: Ok most of them are probably not terminally ill, but still Kepral's is a pretty big deal, you'd think there would be more concern for treating/curing it by other races.. I'm not sure if the population has grown since about 400k of them were taken to Kahje, but that's still not that many considering..

That's a VERY good point! They needed help too! Why couldn't there have been a race related quest where you helped the hanar develop a cure. That way you could have gotten drell/hanar assets in return for helping out a dying species.

Oh god now that this has come about you've opened the box it can not be shut.

I remember that at one point in time, in some online Gaming Site Mag, there was a thing about how BW showed them some of their ideas for ME3. Anyway in it , there was a thing were you went to Kajhia (is that how you spell the planet?) and you helped develop a cure for Keprles, and it the mission even had a name too. Sadly I can't remember it all.

But now that this box has been opened

WHY were the Batarians suddenly thrown away? Don't give me that lame excuss that the Reapers got them all and there's not much left of 'em it's BS. I wanted to have the Batarian outcast issue taken care of BIG TIME. I mean heck with Arraval it was like the biggest issue that needed fixing. BW just threw the Batarians away like they did with the Drell and Hanar. But this is all perfectly fine because we got Quarians and Geth, and We got Krogan Genophage, and did I mention we got Quarian and Geth?

Quarian and Geth it makes it all OK! Seeing that trigger happy loon Han'Gerrel and the Quarian Geth thing it makes up for everything right? Quarian and Geth

Because people are selfish, yeah I know that is my argument for everything. The Krogan, as violent and prone to fighting as they are, are tanks. The Turians know this and that is why they wanted them to help them with Palevan, didn't ask for humans or asari...no, Krogans. The galactic community if given a choice as to who to save Krogan or Drell are going to go with the Krogan because they know (selfish) that the Krogan are going to fight hard and they are even harder to kill. Truth be told if my homeworld were under attack (as much as I love Drell), I'm asking for the Krogans to come help me.

Harbinger itself dismissed the Drell: “Drell; useless, insufficient numbers.” Unless they decide to incite a war against someone, they will not be noticed. You know the whole mindset, "Out of sight, out of mind." I'm not saying it's right that they are ignored, it's just that they are too quiet that people just forget they are there.

I'm not condoning this at all and I'm not even saying it's right but the Hanar are not stupid, no matter what Shepard says. I'm sure they could have cured Kepral's by now or adapted them but do they WANT too? Do they want the population to go exploding again and have another Rahkana on their tentacles? As long as it is known that Kepral's will kill off some of the drell, it will keep population under control. The Hanar use the Drell to do the things they cannot physically do. Do they really want to lose that? Do they want the Drell to eventually realize they do not need the Hanar anymore? I cannot answer that with certainty because I do not know the mindset of the Hanar well enough to comment but it does lead to some interesting thoughts. I can guess. Why save them to begin with? Kindness or knowing they will be grateful and help the Hanar with whatever is asked of them out of gratitude?

I guess if I wanted to I could also ask..would the Drell turn their backs on the Hanar even if they didn't need them anymore? After centuries have passed would the new generation of Drell still hold gratitude toward the Hanar for saving their ancestors?

@gearseffect haha yeah, so much to do with quarians and geth and krogan and turians that it felt like no one else existed.. I was suprised with how little batarians were directly dealt with especially considering what Shep did in Arrival.. or maybe they were and I just didn't notice, I dunno I can't remember much of the details in ME3.

@utaker you make a really good point, I can see how the Hanar might have a hidden agenda with the whole cure thing, which is why it would have been cool if Shep could have gotten other scientists working on a cure (like Salarians) but I suppose people might argue that they would be preoccupied with other things once the reapers arrive.. but not all the salarians in the galaxy are working on the genophage.. I dunno.. I just want my Thane back :'(

It would have been nice to see Shep's backstory develop more in ME3, I've always played as a colonist but does anyone know if Shep talks to his/her parents at all (even through email or whatever) in ME3 if they are still alive?

@utaker...I've always thought that about the Hanar. So I agree 100%.

Edit: Is it bad that I prefer the Geth over the Quarians? And I prefer the Drell over all of them?

The Compact seems more like something the Drell came up with themselves out of gratitude to the Hanar for saving their lives. As Thane said, they feel it is a great honor to aid the Hanar (and anyone can refuse to serve, but few do). If feels more like a bond of friendship to me, than anything else. I highly doubt the Hanar would willingly enslave them. It doesn't seem likely to me they would have an ulterior motive. I believe they just didn't want to stand by and watch an entire race die, when they could do something about it. They appear to be rather kind-hearted by nature.

As for Drell population, I doubt Kepral's itself would keep their numbers down. It seems like a disease that kills very slowly. We have no idea what their reproduction rates are, or how long the gestation period for a Drell child is. They also seem to have a short lifespan compared to other races (only about 75-80 years). Not to mention there are only a few hundred thousand of them in a galaxy filled with trillions.  It's only been a few generations since they were rescued and they need a lot more time to recover their numbers.

Thane mentioned Rakhana was a planet already sparse on resources. He also said that his people weren't able to develop technology quickly enough to deal with their rising population. It's possible they reproduce quickly, but I think there were a lot of other factors that accumulated into the race facing extinction.

Even if the Drell did reach a point where they became too numerous, the Hanar have plenty of colonies and the galaxy is a rather large place. I don't see it as being an issue.

I don't see the Drell ever forgetting that debt of gratitude, considering it seems to be something brought up early in their lives (Thane being given to the Hanar for training at the age of six, for example). If anything, I think they'd be even more thankful if Kepral's was cured.

EDIT:
I also wanted to add that we don't know what the mortality rate is for Kepral's, or if it effects every individual.  I think it's something that developed recently, or the Hanar would have been working to fix it far sooner.

@Aislinn I think you're right actually, it might be logical to think the Hanar would have an ulterior motive to saving the Drell but they do seem a pretty gentle species over all (except for the crazy Hanar in ME3 who supported the reapers).
