So another day of filing, and other mindless work. This got me thinking yet again, on how BW could implement a choice to keep Thane alive, while not disrupting the current base game. (and yes, I
personally believe it should have been implemented in the first place, but alas.....that's not what we got.) I am trying to imagine a "reasonable" way to integrate this, AND it would then be available for anyone who has an alive (obviously

),
loyal Thane (romance or not). My original idea for a patch would still be utilized, but could even be added to the EC DLC (might encourage even more people to download it and play/replay the game.) I will include my description from my original idea, and have now added a small diagram (poorly made

). The diagram (with different content, of course), could be used to also add something for Jacob as well.
Here was my original idea:
1) Even though I love the idea (very much so) of LI DLC, I fear that exclusive LI DLC probably won't happen. However, I DO see them adding more LI content to story DLC, to appeal to the likes of us crazy RPGers.
2) For Thanemancer though, (as he would say...) this is problematic. They wrote a character arc for him that currently has him die no matter what, AND is in obvious physical distress through the small portion of the game, he is in. So, again, from the perspective of BW writers, and the unlikely chance of Thane exclusive DLC, a question must be answered: How do we believably (within the current written format) give people a chance to have his fate altered, so he could be utilized in future story DLC??
I believe I came up with a workable idea:
a) Add content to the EC that adds one more dialogue set to Thane's character (and a small one to his Doctor).
This extra dialogue would only trigger after all other previous in game dialogue is exhausted (but before Citadel Coup).
c) This dialogue would have a standard wheel with two right side options, and two left side options. The Bottom Left option would simple close off the convo, allowing you to simply move on from the dialogue. (for those that want a different fate for him.....i.e. same fate as you get in the vanilla game....yuck)
d) The Top Left option, would open a quick Investigative dialogue, in which we would learn that his Doctor mentioned something about new treatments to help his people. Perhaps it is the lung medi-gel treatment, but he doesn't believe it will be available to him.
e) A choice to end the convo with a paragon or renegade response.....neither will effect (beyond tone/personality) the information you have gleened from Thane.
f) This will lead you to talk to the Doctor one last time before the coup. Following a few lines to indicate, that you hope she will find a way to get the treatment to Thane.
g) The new content provided would effectively be done, because the game would then use existing markers already provided in the base game. Basically, if you followed the life extention route with this new content, Thane would NOT end up in the KL fight. The base game would register this the same as if you never went to speak with him in the first place. The sacrifice for this would be what you would expect; if Kirahee is alive in your PT, then he is the one to die. If not, then the Salarian Councilor dies.
<side note: I would also include one last piece of easy content. A NEW letter from Thane (in place of LotSB letter, since Thane would now be alive.....and we never needed that damn thing to be recycled anyway....) telling us about his current whereabouts and that Kolyat was with him. Also add him to Codex entry as he should have been from the beginning.>
3) With this new content from the EC, it would effectively make Thane available for any further DLC they may wish to do. INCLUDING any LI content that was also incorporated in to said DLC. This would also allow for the romance to continue as it should have been in the first place for all Thanemancers, and we could also get the Paramour Achievement from this extra LI content. HOLD THE DRELL!
Now for the "highly artistic" diagram <sarcasm>:

This wouldn't be my absolute favorite solution, but again, I am trying to work within the confines of not altering existing content (base game). The upside is, he would now be available to be used in upcoming story DLC, and extra LI content/DLC.....should they make some. The downside is, no real extra LI content would occur in the base game (except the
NEW letter from Thane, and new Codex entry).
As I said earlier, this could also be implemented for Jacobmancers......have no idea about dialogue and content, but it would work in a similar fashion. Just like there would be a sacrifice for Thane (Kirahee or Salarian Councilor), Jacob's sacrifice would most likely involve a breakup with Brynn (and since he would see this as a douchee thing to do, well.....)
Again, hardly what we were hoping for, but it could be something they could employ with no retconning of base game. And, for anyone who don't want to bother (or can't/won't download it) it won't effect general gameplay....they aren't really missing out on base game content (which you KNOW someone would **** about if we tried to ask for too much....bah, wuteva!

)
