I shouldn't be surprised to see something like this...
to those who romanced Thane, you knew what you were getting into. One of the first things Thane tells you is that he is dying, that he doesn't have much time left. you knew any romance you have with him wouldn't last very long, you shouldn't be surprised that he died.
EDIT: you should feel glad that he survived into ME3 to begin with, not to mention the fact that he went out in blaze of glory fighting Kai Leng
Just like I
"knew what I was getting into" in ME3, when Mordin can wip up a Genophage cure in a timeframe shorter than he explicitly said himself.
Or, that the geth can Terraform Rannoch, so the Quarians can take off their helmets without repurcussion, when it was stated that re-adapting the Quarians would take significantly longer.
Or, that a "Starchild" would explain the Reapers origins and ask me to "pick a color" for the sake of the Galaxy.
And just like the abovementioned I also "knew" they'd completely throw any character development Thane had in ME2 out of a proverbial window in ME3.
Yes I totally saw all of that coming! /sarcasm
Fact is, Thane's fate wasn't set in stone from the beginning. Not to mention that Bioware's previous history with DA and ME was that it builds so much of the story on player choice.
To have something like Thane's fate out of the players hands is imo absurd when the story is built on the premise of player choice.
Also add the subtle hints for a cure/treatment. In that vein, holding hopes for curing/treating Thane isn't farfetched imo.
