Hello. So, I've posted on another thread citing the "invalid license" issue, but it never seems to stay on the front page for very long and I'm the only one who's mentioned the bad image error in it (which was a few days ago), so I thought I'd post a "new" topic.

I was very excited for Mass Effect 3, but I can't seem to play. When I installed (and reinstalled) it, it would do the Release Date Check, it would speed to 30%, 80%, and then just crash. Then I'd get either:

Bad Image Error

C:\\Windows\\system32\\d3dx9_42.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support.

or "Invalid License. Reason code: Missing DLL <six Chinese/Japanese characters> Error: 0x000000c1". But it's usually both at the same time, and that's led me to believe that the two are related. (Please don't make fun of me if it would be obvious even if they occurred on separate occasions, which has happened a few times.)

I looked at the given path to the dll file, and it was there, only in all-caps, but I'm not sure if that makes a difference. I tried looking into the problem some more today, and I thought that maybe it might be because I'm running DirectX 11. Could someone please tell me if that could very well be my issue and how to remedy it, or if it totally isn't it and what else to try until Bioware comes out with another patch?

I saw your thread literally right after I posted mine, Technet. I didn't post because I didn't really feel I had anything else to add, but it's always nice to know you're not alone. :-) Actually, there are a whole bunch of people with this problem. See here.

At least Bioware replied. That's something. I mean, my dad makes software and tells me how easy it is for stuff to go wrong, and I know that fixing this isn't gonna take five minutes... It's just that I'm kinda frustrated. They'll fix it, though.

Just out of curiousity, have either of you guys (or anyone else reading this) gotten the bad image error, too? I haven't heard of anyone else getting it for this game.

Hmm. Well, I haven't seen that error since I reinstalled it again this afternoon, but I did still see the invalid license one. Maybe the two aren't related after all and the bad image was fixed.

I, too, was looking forward to losing my body and soul to Mass Effect 3 this weekend.

I heard that Kingdoms of Amalur and Battlefield 3 players were getting this error, so Googled solutions people got for those games. I don't trust myself to try them, but my dad said he'd help me. I'll check back here when we have results.

They said they were investigating the problem. My dad doesn't get home until tonight; I think I'll try tech support and see if they have a solution.

Well, then, Technet, you're missin' out, BECAUSE I FIXED IT!!!! Well, my daddy did.

My computer was set back to factory specs, which takes about an hour. If you've updated your operating system, you'll have to reinstall Windows, which takes... a lot longer. Either way, make sure you back-up all your important stuff.

Not the ideal fix and I don't even know what was causing the problem, but I'm happy.

Yep, they're quick to take our money for the game and absolutely next no response when the cr4p hits the fan.

Don't bother with ea support either, they'll just raise your blood pressure

Well anyone getting the d3dx9_42.dll error reinstall Microsoft DirectX that should fix it.

As for the other Invalid License. Reason code: Missing DLL error, repair/reinstall the game that should fix it (as the game is missing a dll). This is based on other times it happened. Also can happen if other programs have a dll that it needs.

The other solution works as it forces you to reinstall everything.
