I notice a lot while reading on here that people list their party members for certain things like boss fights and dungeons and I was just wondering is it not wise to switch between different party members for different quests and what not seeing as how they all level up anyways or is their a reason I should stick to a solid group of the same other 3 members. I'm really new to DA and RPGs in general. For example I play a mage and I always have Alister tanking and Wynne to heal in my groups but occasionally I switch between Zevran and Leilanna is that foolish?

Not at all. Try different combos and use the ones you like. Also, you can get a lot from the different part members, so experiment and find out.

Some party members know more about certain areas then others. Listen to them when they talk to you, then if you find you're going to, say, a town where they were born and grew up it, it might be wise to bring that person with you.

It's all preference. I used the same 3 party members throughout the game without switching them unless I was forced.

It depends on choice.
My 'core' team is my awesome dual-wielding Elven warrior, Alistair and Leliana. I picked Alistair and Leliana pretty much for RP-reasons (Alistair being the fellow Grey Warden and Leliana the love interest). I switched between Morrigan and Wynne from time to time, depending on what I was going to do. Since Wynne is more the goody-goody type than Morrigan, it's 'better' to have her with you on certain quests.
Only when I was going to fight certain impressive enemies would I switch Alistair for Shale.
The 'roles' of my team were basically:
My PC for mopping up groups of enemies and bigger baddies.
Alistair for melee support.
Leliana for unlocking chests and archery.
Wynne/Morrigan for either more defensive or aggressive magical support.
Shale, whenever I'd take him with, would be the tank.
Of course, if you'd ask a powergamer, he'd tell you that my set-up would not be the most optimal. But hey. RP-reasons make more sense to me!

I've been mixing it up a bit too. My Mage always takes Shale but the other 2 slots fluctuate between Alistair, Lelianna, Wynne and Morrigan. I also miss Dog a lot so I might try and fit them back in again too for some bits.
I suppose the only real worry when swapping is to make sure that you equip people you may use in the future with decent items you pick up or buy along the way. That's probably the biggest "penalty" for not sticking to the same 4, equipping them out and then selling everything else that's not needed.
