Shepard confronts with the Illusive Man on Citadel. The Illusive Man lets him choose: Control the
Reapers or destroy them.
If Shepard decides to follow the path of the Illusive Man, he destroys galactic civilizations as we know them. He can't control the reapers, they control him. But he thinks, that he is the Commander over the Reapers, but he is their toy, forced to live/suffer eternal just like in hell, ready to destroy any other emerging Civilization at it's peak. This is the truly bad ending.
If Shepard destroys the Reapers as originally intended, a whole tableau of decisions opens.
He either convinces the Illusive man, so that he kills himself (Paragon Choice), or he gathers his
last human strengh from indoctrination to kill him by himself (Renegade Choice).
In either situation Admiral Anderson isdeadly wounded. And they sit and watch from the space window, as the
Reapers getting destroyed. Shepard also is wounded and can't make it long. After he and Anderson share last words and moments, he thinks he has to die himself. Even the player thinks that.
But then, with last hope, Shepard get's contacted by his loveinterest. She tells him, that the reapers are destroyed. He tells her, that he probably doesn't make it. She gathers the full crew of normandy and they rush to the Citadel to rescue him at any cost, endangering their own lives in severly damaged Citadel to save Shepard.
The Scope of Destruction on Earth after killing the Reapers depends on the troup strengh you have gathered. This influences the outcome of the Game heavily:
If you have gathered enough troups, the earth is recoverable without any change. Live on Earth is for future generations possible like before.
If you have gathered some troups, only sections of the earth are to recover. But civilization will come
back even when it costs a lot time, effort and severity. Maybe a better culture can emerge this time.
If you haven't gathered enough troups, live on earth is destroyed. The last hope of humanity are the deminished
fleets which have to choose a new homeplanet. Later you can decide through the Starmap, which planet this is . (Maybe the Form of Planet you choose decides if humanity will prosper again, live in war (on the long run) with other civilizations whoose planet they inhabit, or if they live a primitive but happy live).
But in any situation that comes with this Reaper destroy decision, the different alliance nations have proven the Reapers wrong. They forge a bond, to help each other rebuilding their societies, tightening the connections between the civilizations, remembering the great war together and the sacrifices for each other symbolized by Shepard, who is their true hero. And – so it seems – there is no more Chaos but Order. And a Human, Namely Shepard has helped to prove the Reapers wrong with his human decisions.
But Shepard has no more interest to live on earth/the new colony. He wants true peace and the first time of his life he decides to live a live without battles and just in company with his now truely found love. He is no politician and has no more interest in rebuilding the earth. His job is done.
Depending on the Love interest, the Ending is:
Tali: She and Shepard live on her homeplanet – right on the place, where she dreamed of before. Their home is an old cruiser of the migrant fleet, tweaked to be a comfortable home. There she doesn't need her mask anymore. Talis Reputation is Restored – she is no more an Exile. Her people offer her the old job of her father. But she refuses to live in the shadow of her father anymore. She just wants to live with Shepard and travel through space, visiting old friends and fancy places, just how she dreamed her own life to be.
Liara: She helps to rebuild her Homeplanet with important aspects of Prothean technology. She even reconstructs a temple in memoriam of the Protheans, remembers their sacrifices with a statue of their Prothean Friend (DLC). She and Shepard meander over her Planet, enjoying the peace and nature in calmness as long as they can. One thing is clear: she will survive Shepard. But they are living just now. Fusioning with each other in deep affection. Enjoying their given time, which is short but sweet.
Ashley: Leaves the Alliance. She now takes more care about her family – her sisters. She has an important Part in Rebuilding the Human Earth/Colony as an consultant. Shepard and she marry just like they did it in old times. They are living a live just like in the 21st Century. Shepard behaves like a normal guy, enjoying the time without fighting, just cooking, playing with his kids and thinking. Both reach inner peace in just resting and living a normal, calm life – as far as that could be (depending on the state of the earth). Shepard loves to tell his kids stories. Moreso, the kid in his dreams showed him, how important it is, to care and to be thankful for peace and a „normal“ life.
The other Members:
Garrus: If Tali isn't Shepards love interest, it is Garrus who will live on with her on her Planet, and travelling through space from time to time. If not, he travels through space as an outlaw, remembering the old times with Shepard.
Jacob: Lives happy with his Child and his wive.
EDI, Joker: Their love can only be platonic. But Edi came to human understanding. They take care of the Normandy. And both learned and teach, that technology has to be carefully used, to avoid extinction. EDI is the perfect entity to transport this lesson, followed by the Reaper Invasion and the Cerberus Plans.
Prothean: One last look on his Memory Beacon. He feels that he has completed his task. Goes to an everlasting sleep, sad and relieved. Sad, because he has lost his culture and friends, relieved, because this time he did it right. And he learned something from Shepard: Humility pays off.
James: Joined the N7 Programme and is their new hope. Also helps rebuiling earth.
50.000 years later a new civilization sees the beacon Liara deployed in Space, seeing the noble and selfless actions of Commander Shepard (through the eyes of this loveinterest – also proves her everlasting love in that case) – surviving his race. And this new Civilization can prosper. Because no more Reapers are coming.
For me this is a much more satisfying ending. If I have forgotten something: Tell me.
