The ending is an hallucination! You are being Indoctrinated!

If Indoc works to manipulate a person's thinking, then what better what to keep Shepard 'sedated' then by showing him his crew, friends, and LI are all safe and sound somewhere beautiful and far away from the death?
I really do like this theory.

The Reapers are already winning the battle, why would they trick you into letting them escape?
I can see this happening the more I think about it cause why would harbinger come down if the reapers where winning? I can see how the the gurdian is trying to make shepard pick either synthesis or control.

On second though, maybe not. The secret ending shows shepard in a pile of ruble so it can't be after the anderson/illusive man talk... It probably is after the beam hits him running for the teleport device...kyleh619 wrote...

Good theory, and I hope it's true, but why would Harbinger not just kill/finish off Shepard when he goes down after the first beam attack, rather than hope to indoctrinate him?
Maybe because he'd be the most useful weapon they can have. If the Reapers are losing, and they made Shepard 'take control' of them, then they could retreat, recover, and come back with avengence with the most powerful person in the galaxy working FOR them.
Just an idea.

1 - Shepard awakes on Earth in the aftermath... How did he get there? It can either mean that NOTHING on the Citadel happened or that he somehow crashed in a part of the citadel and made it out alive.
Assuming it's the former - how did they destroy the Reapers? Did the Citadel open up at all? Did the Crucible work? What about the Mass Relays, id they get destroyed?
Assuming the latter (more likely) - Which part was the hallucination? Let's assume it's everything past the "crawling to the console" part. Again, how did the Crucible work, and how could Shepard make ANY choice if he's not awake?
Also, if the Reapers are controlling Shepard, why would they allow him to destroy the mass relays at all? That's not winning for them.

Harvinger has no way to know who shepard is or track where he is unless he were to indoctrinate him which happens when you spend time by reapers or reaper artifacts. The reapers are only linked to indoctrinated subjects.cannedcream wrote...

The major problem I have with this is... if you don't want to spend any more money on the game or DLC to see this through to its conclusion, then the game is utterly unsatisfying. There should be some footage of the truth if you choose to fail correctly. Or some hint of it, at least. Not some stargazer saying "Tell us more tales of the Shepard!" The whole Stargazer bit kinda ruins a lot of this theory, as do some statements from a BW writer who specifically said that there's a "silver lining" in the destruction of the Mass Relays. So... this is really just epileptic trees.
If anything, don't take this as a "this is what they were planning all along" sort of thing. Look at it as a "If they decided to listen to the fans and change the ending, this is a brilliant loophole".
That's what I choose to do.

There is a good chance that all of the endgame posts are for nothing. But I have to hope!

2. The reapers are not destroyed yet. You wake up and go into the beam to activate the crucible, which actually is a superweapon that destroys the reapers.
3. Nothing after Harbinger lasers you is real.

Lets just assume for one second, that the citadel was not only orbiting earth, but orbiting it in its atmosphere, which is, lets be honest here, a dumb idea, because the citadel is huge. So the citadel is floating around in the exosphere and Shepard crashes down on a metalscrap. 500 kms to go. Good luck with that.

The original thought of Shepard being indoctrinated is making more sense now and your theory about the Normandy's crash landing on a paradise makes sense. It also makes sense for the Reapers to have that little boy represent the catalyst and have him say that the synthesis of organisims and technology seem the best since that is what the Reapers are a mixture of organics and tech. Let's hope this is waht they were going for!!!

The theory is basicly that Shepard gets knocked out by the lazer and while laying on the floor weak after spending time around reapers he starts halusinating and becoming indoctrinated and you have to fight it off by chosing to destroy the reapers instead of joining and "controlling" them. Its all a dream and a trick.thePredator50 wrote...

Otherwise it doesn't make sence if he was really in space.. to wake up on earth in a pile of ruble...

Harbinger DOES know who Shepard is, though. I imagine all Reapers do. And this is after the Reaper is already inside Shep's head. We know that indoc can manipulate your thoughts, memories, and feelings. If the reapers mean to keep Shepard under control and stop him from fighting back, then why not 'show' him that his loved ones are safe?
It's just a theory. It's better than saying BW just made a huuuuuge continuity error.

Yes, he knows who he is but he doesn't have a way to "track" where he is at the moment.
The only way to do that was if he was to become indoctrinated, only then they would be linked to shepard.

The Catalyst also offer Synthesis as a "best" scenario. If you are indeed indoctrinated, Synthesis could in fact be the worst scenario. How? By making every being in the galaxy part synthetic, you expose the possibility of reaper code insertion, as they have done multiple times to the geth.
That's exactly why I didn't choose the Synthesis ending. I was thinking that it would make it all too easy to indoctrinate people if they were all connected by some weird network connection
