From a woman's POV (at the young end of Gen-X)...  just my opinion and based on my play-throughs...
I really enjoy Bioware games but when it comes to romantic options I always feel like it was an afterthought.  Yes, I know the game is an adventure story and not a romance, but if romantic options are going to be part of gameplay I think they could be better.

Here are my thoughts on the three romantic options:

Alistair - I guess he was supposed to be the leading man.  I guess it was supposed to be a refreshing twist that he was a virgin.  For lack of better words he just wasn't manly enough.  Even the other NPCs felt the same. They question his intelligence and sexuality.  I know he was cloistered but it felt like trying to romance a 14 year old.  I guess for my personal tastes he was just too metro.  Plus a lot of his romantic gestures seemed like lines from an inexperienced lounge lizard, an unpracticed pick up artist.  I guess some girls like this and respond to these puerile romantic gestures but not me.

I guess for some perspective, here's a list of fictional men I find to be manly men:  The Man with No Name/Clint Eastwood, any role by Gregory Peck, Rhett Butler, The Man From Snowy River, Prince Lir from Last Unicorn, Mr. Rochester from Jane Eyre.

So, for next time, can the ladies please get a leading man who is not such a follower?

Zevran - He was the stereotypical greasy "sultry lover" that painfully reminded me of Puss in Boots from Shrek every time he spoke.  Not to mention his special boots and gloves! His sole purpose seemed to just be good for the quick tumble, no serious romance option, just enough to sow some wild oats.  Boring.

Leliana - I really didn't find the lesbian option that alluring, but I put it all on me since I don't swing that way.

So what do you folk think?  Did you like the romantic options or did you hope for someone different?

Alistair was pretty much a slightly modified Kaiden Alenko. I think Bioware believes that women like that kind of man - to be honest, they are probably right for many women. At least there are a few options in this game (Zevran, Alistair, Leliana for women; Zevran, Leliana, Morrigan for men).

Instead of options beyond these 4, I'd have liked more in-depth romances. It seemed like once you "tented" your chosen partner you were pretty much done with them. Not a whole lot happens between you two after that.

If I were a woman, I would be more interested in Bann Teagan than either of the dudes in the group that you can sleep with.

I agree with you some red.

For men its not much different (even though I did like Morrigan-maybe it was just the voice though)

Alistair-can't have it both ways, I think he was done well to suit his character. He was an inexperienced kid. Romance for him would be undeveloped and juvenile, he doesn't know what do with a woman and it shows. I do think they should have had more options for you gals, but in all honesty how could they do a "manly man" follower? It would be hard to make a believable Clint Eastwood that just follows you around...

Zev-yes hes a fruit, but that (again) fits his background/char. Although to me he reminded me more of the Spaniard in Princess Bride.

Leliana-was the opposite of Zev while still being an "experienced" person.

Morrigan-straight forward no nonsense tell it like it is kind of person.

Depends on your partner. I knew when Morrigan asked me for my opinion on love there was no way I was going to end the conversation with +Approval.

I actually like how it's possible to solidify a relationship relatively early in the game, as opposed to previous Bioware titles which waited until just before the final battle. And in terms of integrating romance into games, Bioware is better then anyone else; they seem to be the only developer to put any effort into it. Most of them are better then the romance subplots of most movies/books. (And I suspect a game where the romance is the main plot would be a hard sell.)

I like Alistair, myself. He's probably the first male 'romance interest' I've found interesting enough to actually want to go through the romance with him.

That said, the whole romance thing is lacking a lot, and without devoting a huge amount of resources to each one, they're never going to feel very complete, satisfying, or like an actual romance/relationship between people. And from a development standpoint, I don't see the point of putting that level of resources into the romances, when people seem to be happy with the current level.

During one of the chats with Leliana, she comments on the times that she and the main character are sitting watch, talking, and so on. Without actually showing moments like those, without all the everyday interactions that happen constantly, they always seem shallow.

And yes, it does feel to me like once you get the sex scene, there's not much more to do or say beyond that. There are a few more interactions usually, but not enough to give the sensation of a continuing, strong relationship - especially such a new one, where the people involved still have a lot to learn about each other.

Maybe it's just me, but I really liked Alistair. He's so funny and sweet, reminded me of my husband back in the day when he wasn't sure he had me forever. LOL

I liked all of them (except Zevran but I didn't romance him so it's more like I don't have an opinion on him). Alistair gets a lot of women's approval, so he's obviously working pretty well, and why spoil a good thing?

But I'd like it if they'd put a romance option that isn't A) Shy, brave knightly sort or B) Smooth talking scroundel.

Maybe a badass, no-nonsense death-dealing whirlwind of masculinity would be a refreshing change.

The women seem to be evolving from what I remember from the older Bioware games though. Leliana is a nice touch but I wish they'd hired a more convincing voice actress for her. Some of her lines don't really convey the feeling of the lines, although she does the cute thing alright.

Well... yes actually, heh. Can you imagine how hard it would be to get him to open up his feelings? Now THAT is an achievement.

Oddly enough Teagan never did attempt to flirt with my female PC, but maybe I didn't bother initiating the lines. And he's not nearly badass enough to fit the bill though, but he should be one archetype of romancable npcs, the dashing and charming noble. But that might be a little cliche...

Haha, seriously. They make him able to flirt but then they're like, "But guess what? You can't go anywhere romantically with him, HAH!" Lmao, it's so annoying... not to mention not being able to do anything with Cullen who has a huge crush on your female mage in the Magi origin intro.

As for my prefered romance option: the character Achilles from Troy, now that's a hot manly man. *drools*

Whenever Zevran speaks I keep thinking he sounds like Bat-Manuel from the Tick.

I actually never cared for Brad Pitt until I saw that movie.

There is some allure to that type of poweful man (in fiction) who will just take you because he wants you and because he can. David Gaider might be considering writing a Clive Owen type romance in the future, which would probably be something like that.

He flirted with my last girl, it was good stuff - not shy per se, but guarded and gracious, was honored that so noble and beautiful a lady would take an interest in him, and if only we had met under different circumstances ... but we could talk of that later... but later he never had any real interactable talking options.

That made me sad, though I guess it would have complicated my romance with the once and future king.

Unlike the OP, I was totaly swept off my feet by Alistair. But then that's the type of guy I've always gone for... the goofy, sweet type. Maybe I just like that he makes me feel young again.. who knows... whatever the reason I am very glad that David wrote him into this story. :)

I don't know about romancing as a female, but I found romance with Leliana to be quite "romantic". Sure, there is a limited number of dialog choices left once you slept with her and it is definitely a flaw but I still think the process of romancing her was memorable, like when she watched the PC sleep, etc.

*Spoilers*

After all, if you made the Ultimate Sacrifice and died, the girl decides to kill herself or whatever "I can be with my love again" means. That's pretty romantic right there.

I demand Flemeth be made romanceable.

Flem:" I see Morrigan has found someone to dance to her tune."

Me: "It was only because I saw in her a pale reflection of her mother..."

Flem: "Oh ho ho, we have a charmer here, do we?"

Me: "Why do we go inside your bog-hut and I'll show you some real charmings."

Flem: "You know I'm a dragon, right?"

Me: "We're all the same in the dark, sweetums."

And so forth.

I agree with you completely. All of the female PC romance options were bleh.

Personally, if I were free to pick anyone from the game, I'd pick Bann Teagon (practically the only real man in the game aside from Duncan).

*chuckles at Flemeth romance* Well, I <3 Alistair (of course). Yes, it's nice to have a manly guy, but I also like the awkward handsome guy with a silly sense of humor. Sure he's not the picture of maturity all the time and did lead a cloistered life, but he has his charms (at least to some of us). Plus, you do get to toughen him up a bit later on (not that really impacts his romance dialogue).

As for Kaidan - no - I think they're way, waaaaaay different. Kaidan is Mr. Maturity. Listen to him talk, and you can see he's got a lot of perspective on things - very calm, etc.

I don't think Duncan is the romantic (or even reproducing) type.  As the men go, I really liked Zathrian, once he relented and let go of his vengeance.  Too bad he died doing it.

I think what all the women on the forums here like about Alistair is his potential.  With the right reform-minded vixen, he could turn out ok.  Sadly, the reformer tend to go after badboys and civilize them.

Ahh if only the Human noble female could've pushed on a little harder to get Duncan to share her bed. Heh.

I don't know, I think part of Alistair's appeal is that he is so himself and is so honest about it, he puts himself out there all the time, risking rejection and ridicule (some of those dialogue options are brutal) and he really adores and respects the PC. His humor is awesome, I still laugh even though I'm on my 5th playthrough.

I love all of this about Alistair. Putting oneself out there is really attractive (providing it's not an overly offensive self).

Alistair was okay. I guess it just really boils down to him not being my type:blush:

He left me wishing for Jack T. Colton from Romancing the Stone...
