IMO: The Romances not that Romantic

In truth there are more friendship elements than anything else, the building of trust and loyalty which are staples of any true friendship. Then you flirt a little, a romance flag kicks in, and you end up with a tent scene. After that not much except perhaps an epilogue mention. A spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate, indeed. I think Aerie's post-sex-scene romance was probably the best they've done; she became pregnant and still traveled with you, and we got to see a bit of her motherly side in ToB as you planned for the child's future. The implementation was a bit sketchy, but I thought it was a step in the right direction, or at least a good way to keep the conversations going once the romance was established.
I still have a special place for Safiya, even though she lacks a sex scene, and Wynne has earned a place as a favorite friend in video games.
There's a fine line between writing an epic CRPG with friendships and romances, and writing a love simulator. I'd rather have the CRPG, but I feel more could be done in terms of continuing the romance once it's been established.
- Dinner for Two at a local inn/tavern, such as the Gnawed Noble in Denerim. Lots of dialog in a cutscene arrangement as our couple shares romantic conversation over a meal.
- Sitting together in front of the fireplace in Arl Eamon's estate, talking about the future.
- New battle cries showing concern for one's lover on the battlefield.
- Romantic gifts separated from generic approval gifts, with unique cutscenes.
- Romance bonuses for both involved characters; non-romance characters wouldn't get these.
And so on. I'm sure with a little imagination it could be done so that we feel like an in-game relationship is 50% friendship and 50% romance, rather than 95% friendship and 5% romance. Heck, until 50 or so approval, we don't even have friendship.
Just some thoughts and ideas (Stan asked for constructive criticism and suggestions).

As for my prefered romance option: the character Achilles from Troy, now that's a hot manly man. *drools*
I actually never cared for Brad Pitt until I saw that movie.
There is some allure to that type of poweful man (in fiction) who will just take you because he wants you and because he can. David Gaider might be considering writing a Clive Owen type romance in the future, which would probably be something like that.
Except in real life, when a powerful man takes you just beause he can......I imagine its not so romantic.

I found Alistair's character too dislikable in the end. Maybe if I was a noblewoman it'd have been a better thing, but having to pressure him to be a King, practically crowning him myself, and then quickly seeing he was as bad at it as could be feared... and then seeing him not have the cajones to give his special lady (me) some friggin' compassionate lovin' in what was most probably her final hours because it wouldn't be "proper"... blech. I don't mind softies, but that's just being inept and spineless to the extreme.
Leliana on the other hand, surprised me. I typically don't like religious types, but she had, of course, a much more complicated background that gave her a more opened mind than I expected. She even recants on most of her religious certitude if you pressure her that way. And the relationship, being the hardest of the four to develop, felt the most real to me. She's goofy, maybe not too smart, and definitely a little crazy, but I don't mind those things and overall, find her the best romance option. Her being available to all sexes doesn't hurt either.

I'm a hetero guy in real life so maybe I just don't get it. Allistair seems like a chump when it comes to romance though.

If I were a woman, I would be more interested in Bann Teagan than either of the dudes in the group that you can sleep with.
You gain points! I love Arl Teagan and would be estatic if ever a romance was set up with him.
Okay, as a woman of 31 years of age, I did enjoy Alistair's romance. Zevran is too .. cliche and sleazy for me.
It is a bit personal for these boards to explain why I like Alistair's romance so much, but suffice to say to each their own.

Gaider once asked me if I was serious when I called the relationship with Safiya in NWN2:MotB a 'romance', yet this game does little more. All Obsidian would have had to do to equal Bioware would have been to add a sex scene near the end. Bingo, it's a romance!
I'm really surprised by this. Safiya was one of the most mature and satisfying romances I've ever role played. She was so emotionally together and easy going; I would easily take her over Leliana or Morrigan.
Though I have to say, even though Morrigan's romance was not very satisfying, her betrayal at the end did a good job of eliciting an emotional response. Leliana bored me to tears.

It would be nice to have a few more scenes/options though, between the tent scene and the end. It shouldn't be "slept with you, romance quest completed!" They should be a more persistent element. I like Endurium's suggestions a lot.

The romances in DA were enjoyable...I did both Alistair's and Zevran's and found them both to be very cute/sweet, and added a nice touch to the storyline, as Bioware's romances always do. That being said, I would have loved to see more of it, especially after the sex. More filler/dialogue in between the sex scene and the final battle would suffice in my eyes, although, as I've always been a sucker for romance subplots, the more there is to the romance, the better
By the way, I absolutely loved the way the romances were handled in Baldur's Gate 2 and ToB.

But I would dearly have loved more interaction after the seduction. I got a few more, but they all seemed to be related to his personal quest line and end game stuff. I would have loved some options when being hosted in castles to sneak of to a room, or yes, chats in front of the fireplace.
Even have some of the other non party npc's making note of yoru relationship if you started snoggin each other in front of them. ;D
I will also add a Yes Please for Sten, Bann Teagan and Duncan to have had romance options. I know, I know....I'm a greedy woman. I've decided on my next run thru, my Noble girls going to sleep with every available man out there.....;D

Just quoting this for a question - in what ending was he a bad king? I've gone through about 6 different endings and in all the ones I made him king he either did well or really well.
As for the main topic, I really did like the Alistair romance, but I liked the Zevran one (with a male PC) too. They're both fun, though Alistair's is certainly more interesting to me for the effect it has on your party's dialoges and so on. Zevran's funny for the 'happy ending' offer too.

I agree. At first his comment gave me hope that this game would be quite the improvement, but after experiencing both Leliana (who I was looking forward to) and Morrigan (ehh), I have a strong desire to set aside DA:O for awhile and replay MotB again. It's one of my favorite campaigns anyway, and the shadow plane is more atmospheric than the Fade (which looks like I'm in somebody's kiln, baking at 600 degrees).

That being said i really agree with putting more romance content in the game and space it a bit more. You can finish the Alistair romance really quick if you like me went for Redcliff first. All you get after that is the comments other characters make about your relationship.
I also think integrating the romances more into the story of the game (for future content) instead of something on the side, which has no real impact on the story or game, makes for a much more emotional and interesting game. I really felt the decisions with Alistair in the end took the game to a new level in how i got involved in the outcome.

OEDIT: Oh and some gossip/trivia: my old classics teacher is related to the woman who was involved in production of Troy (specifically something for Pitt). They used a calf double because they didn't think his were good enough.

Lmao, when I did it with my male character and Zev, the sex scene was hilarious. I dont' know why but somehow it had my character in the Blood Dragon Armor and Zev naked. It was terrible and I couldn't stop laughing.

It doesn't really count but I did like that added touch where sometimes Alistair calls you 'My Love?' when you click on him in order to direct him.
How about a new combat tactics slot (romance tactics slot? XD) that when you're character is in trouble the NPC will do something about it? lol, but I guess we wouldn't really be a 'team' if someone abandoned all strategy and went flying into the fray because they loved someone eh?
Overall I totally agree that more to the romance after the tent scene would be nice. I'm romancing Alistair at the moment and I also feel that after sleeping with him things kind of dry up. I'm at the point before the Landsmeet and there are so many issues going on right now...the potential of him becoming King, the Blight etc...I just wish there was something a little more to remind me there's a romance going on between us.

Zevran - He was the stereotypical greasy "sultry lover" that painfully reminded me of Puss in Boots from Shrek every time he spoke. Not to mention his special boots and gloves! His sole purpose seemed to just be good for the quick tumble, no serious romance option, just enough to sow some wild oats. Boring.
You need to finish the Zevran romance if you think that. It doesn't finish until later on in the game, but it is far deeper than you think. Of all the romance options, his actually is the deepest. You two can end up practically married, but even if you don't make the right choices for that, you definitely have a life partner if you so choose.

Really??? Did you just use him for a quick tumble? Because that's really not the way his romance goes.red8x wrote...
