if you're a human female, you can get it on with an npc in the very beginning with your mother's friends son :D

Actually if you're a human noble (male or female) you can 'get it on' with either Darrien or with Ilona, the elven handmaiden. They will both happily sleep with either male or female PCs.

I do find it curious that Zevran, to my knowledge, never hits on Alistair.  I gather that he picks up right away that it wouldn't go over well, but that doesn't stop him from tormenting Wynne and Morrigan!

There is that conversation about "hopping borders". ;)

I think each of the romances has something to offer if you look at them in the right way. But it's not always easy or obvious how to bring about those moments that have the most emotional impact (like real life, I think).

However, some of the ideas about things that would add some extra realism to the romance could be done fairly easily I think. Not romantic candlelit dinners and so on. But your partner grabbing you after a tough battle (rare random occurrence, not all the time) for a big hug and kiss could work. Or their battle cries changing (again, randomly, but not rarely) to indicate concern for the beloved. Things like that.

Oh, one thing that jarred for me when romancing Alistair. You get to Goldanna's and when he defends you he calls you his friend and a fellow grey warden? When you're at 100 adore and have slept with him? What?

And what's with only being able to kiss Alistair and Morrigan in public? And not Zevran and Leliana? I got the mod to fix that, but that shouldn't be necessary.

In short, I don't think it's depth in the relationships that's missing. It's some kind of acknowledgement (small touches, usually) as you progress that there IS a relationship. By the romantic partner, by your companions, and by the npcs. It wouldn't need lots of those, I wouldn't expect it to be in your face all the time, but touches here and there.

Well, your companions do acknowledge it both through party dialog and through some camp dialog.  I do agree with everything else you say though.

Red I completely agree with you on about half of those things ... especially about Clint Eastwood and Rhett Butler (yum)

And the Puss in boots thing!!!

Alistair was cute to me, but yes I probably would have liked him if he was more experienced I ended up picking Leliana first playthough as a dalish. Although I generally perfer men... she has her charms.

The human noble (idk if its just me) seems to be closer with Alistair in their interaction and the whole king/queen thing. He's rather good to look at :) My noble also deepens kisses with him unlike my dalish elf... so yeah

But after the sex it is boring and I soon get very tired of hearing "Why arent you sweet and attentive" and "something on your mind dear"

bleh

This is my first BioWare game so the romance role playing is new to me. I really enjoyed Oblivion but there is zero role playing in that game. I have romanced both Morrigan and Leliana as a male in previous playthroughs and I am currently playing a lesbian elf romancing Leliana. I am surprised that there are different dialog options by going this route. Personally, I would like to see more development after the "tenting" but I don't think BioWare could develop that too much in a fantasy RPG. I recommended this game to by brother-in-law a few weeks ago but now I wonder what it would be like to play the romance sub plots with your spouse right there on the computer next to you. I suppose there would be some jealousy of these fictional characters.

Agreed.  I had my Dalish character, the one of my characters who was most in love with Alistair, kiss him at crucial moments like right before they met the Archdemon and on the way to the Landsmeet, when she knew that if Loghain won they would be executed.  Unfortunately game mechanics meant this didn't always work out as romantically as I planned it out in my head!  Like talking to him right before meeting the Archdemon triggered the dialogue where he wants to gossip about your party members.  LOL

I also set his tactics so that he would attack any enemy attacking me.  I'm on my first Zevran romance playthrough and forgot to do this, but noticed that his default tactics are already set that way... a nice insight into the character, I think.

I agree with Susan. The small touches are what's missing, definitely. Everything ends too abruptly, and the Leliana and Zevran characters have such possibilities, they could be fleshed out so much better. The basis is excellent, kudos to the writer, but the follow up sucks. I hated that I had to get a mod to be able to kiss either one in public.

The Zevran romance is better in my opinion, because it doesn't conclude until way late in the game, which is entirely in character to a man that led a life like Zevran until he met up with my PC and then fell for her big time.

It really shows how much little things matter, especially in romances. I, and therefore my PC, got completely turned off by Alistair's "something in your mind, dear?" Dear?? What? Has he suddenly become my mother, or far worse, my father figure? Have they been married for 50+ years, and my PC never noticed? Dear? Indeed.

And what's Morrigan doing in my PC's bedroom, might I ask? Where is Zevran/Alistair/Leliana? I don't know much about scripting, but couldn't the current romance partner spawn in there? And to top it off, she wants to use my PC's bed on the eve of battle for her ritual? Get out of here, my PC has her own plans for the evening. Go do Alistair/Loghain elsewhere, my PC needs her bed herself ;)

I think it's safe to say that Morrigan in your bedroom has nothing with romance to do at all...;)

Lol, I know Xandurpein. That's the whole point. My PC's are female, she has no business in there. I want the romance partner in there, and I want Morrigan to do her 'business' elsewhere. It's a big castle, surely there are other rooms to be had?

If my PC were male, it makes at least a little sense (unless he romanced Leliana, of course, then it would just be eyebrow raising).

You're right, they do, in a way. But what they acknowledge is that you're having sex - not a relationship. Except for Wynne, who does talk about relationships. There is much teasing about sex - and I love that, don't get me wrong, but perhaps an occasional comment as the story progresses and the relationship does, that there's something more than just sex going on.

Leliana had a talk with my PC about Zevran. I found it endearing. She does mention his good looks and all, but I got the overall feeling that she knew that there was more than sex involved between my PC and Zevran.

But other than that, true enough, only Wynne comments about my PC's involvement with a romance partner. I know she does so with all romance partners, but still...

My PC was a little put out that Wynne more or less told her to break it off with Zevran, but Wynne makes up for it later when she acknowledges that there is more behind it than just a sexual liason.

Gaider once asked me if I was serious when I called the relationship with Safiya in NWN2:MotB a 'romance', yet this game does little more. All Obsidian would have had to do to equal Bioware would have been to add a sex scene near the end. Bingo, it's a romance!

I'm really surprised by this. Safiya was one of the most mature and satisfying romances I've ever role played. She was so emotionally together and easy going; I would easily take her over Leliana or Morrigan.

Pfft. Hated that "romance". So short. So forced. When she exclaimed her love for I was like "Whaaat?!? Yo, girl. I've known you for a WEEK and all we did was havea  nice chat or two. When did this happen?"

No. That's doesn't compare to a bio romance..at all. Nothing in MOTB does.

Morrigan always asks about how he is in bed (he being either Alistair or Zevran, depending on whom your romancing).  And I agree, I like Wynne's apology.  But I think her first dialog when you're romancing Zevran is a riot, especially if you get all nasty with her.
