If you stand directly in front of its scanner it stops so you can say, `Good dog!`
I was underwhelmed by him ... but the CE Edition was so worth it. Though I say that mainly because of Javik.

I could say "Good dog". Then, later, it changed to "Bad dog".
And that was it.
And that was it.

To be the cynical critic:
They had time to program this useless dog but couldn't give me my gun holster back? With the amount of guns and upgrades hidden all over maps I need to holster my massive machine gun to loook around!
What really ticked me off is that your two squadmates walk around with their guns in a 'down' position when there's no fighting going on, while Shepard runs around holding it in a firing position, looking like an idiot. Why couldn't Bioware simply have made it so when your squadmates lower their weapons, Shepard does too?
I agree, although it may seem as pretty nitpickey by some.
The funny thing is, remember the last sequence? Were you holding up your gun by default? NO, you held it down, like a normal human being. They must have thought it was unecessary, cuz it seems like they had the programming figured out.

When I bought the game I was under the impression it would "follow me around the Normandy," it just stays in the hangar.

It just...exists. That is its purpose.
Truthfully, I really don't care.

I thought the dog was pretty half-assed. Seems to be a recurring theme, unortunately.

...still no Urz. How do they **** that up?
Urz: Reacts to your presence. Follows you around. Fights for you in Varren rings.
Mech Dog: ...Is just there..

I remember when I was in the middle of that intense boxing match with Vega, the dog all of a sudden appeared in the background doing his silly gallop and scanning routine. That was hilarious.
