I had no issues with how side missions done in ME1 and 2, so why change it now? i find it incredible frustrating that you are told that you need to aquire some object, but it  doesn't tell you where really, if it'll time out, or when it will even show on the MAP

What they hell were they thinking with Side missions this time?

They are a bit awkward. Most unlock before you even have access to them and they are not consistent with how they offer locations. Could be galaxy, system, or specific planet which makes it even more annoying when it isn't unlocked yet.

It also doesn't help that when you find said item, your journal doesn't update to reflect that so you have to mentally keep track of it.

Eh, I didn't really consider those "side missions." I considered ME's UNC missions and ME2's N7 missions, as well as loyalty missions, to be side missions. In that regard, ME3 did a great job. The collection crap, IMO, was more analogous to ME's collection assignments (Minerals, Data Disks, etc.) and ME2's mineral scanning for upgrades. I think all Bioware has to do (if it isn't too late) is revamp the journal. Some of the assignments don't tell you what system a planet is in, or when it'll time out, and so on. For some reason the journal system that worked absolutely fine in the first 2 games just had to be scrapped.....oh well. If they fix that, it'll be great. The system's OK as is, but it is a bit clunky. I also miss having missions and assignments split up, because with everything on one journal page, the list of stuff to do just gets insanely long.

Yeah, it's annoying, but workable. My policy is to do sidequests ASAP. A story mission is mandatory so it can be put on hold. Some tips on how to work with it. I wish they updated the journal whenever I did find anything.

-Check the map. Characters who have sidequests/sidequests completed may show up on the lists.
-Check the Spectre Requisitions. If you miss an item it'll show up there instead and you can buy it. I've had to do this about three times. Missed items only show up after you've been to the planet.
-Some sidequests can not be done immediately and may require story progression. Way early in, a volus wants an artifact retrieved from the Shrike Abyssal, but I couldn't get to it until after Menae.
-Scan all galaxies and systems to 100%. Not only do you get war assets, but if you obtain a quest that requires you to obtain an item from somewhere, it's a lot easier to pinpoint where it is when a 100% galaxy is no longer 100%.

Seconded.

Though the side missions to the main quests are AWESOME. They are the best part of the game.

Oh yeah, once you do the actual side missions, they pretty much rock. Helping Samara now, and its a great mission!

And agreed with the lack of the journal updating. That's actually the worst part.

I hate more that most of them either break after hitting the first objective in multpart ones, or that they are so simple and flat out not very engaging. Scouring the citadel looking for lit terminals and not finding them is making me want to pull my hair out.
