The day one DLC is defendable. From Ashes came with the collectors edition of the game, no one is going to spend extra money on a game if they aren't getting something out of it. Bioware put it up on the market place so people who didn't grab the collectors edition could still enjoy the DLC.

Have you played it, though? They drop a pretty huge bomb on the Asari / Prothean relationship. How can that be considered extra?
It stinks of a project that was removed. I know they claimed it was finished later, but honestly, I don't buy that it's "optional".
