Three amusing encounters occured for me back-to-back as I was sidequesting in the Citadel last night. First, I learn that some idiot is preaching Cerberus propaganda while someone else sabotages Medi-Gel dispensers... and said idiot turns out to be Conrad Verner. Amusingly, he apologizes just in case he ever accused me of pointing a gun at him when I didn't. Said he was under a lot of stress. Heh...
Then Conrad tells me who is Cerberus contact was, and the obviously indoctrinated psycho shoots at me--and Conrad jumps in the way, complete with dramatic slow-mo. After a heartfelt death scene in which Conrad asks, "Did I help?" and Shepard responds, "Yeah, Conrad. You helped," it's revealed that the gunshot bang wasn't actually the gun firing... but malfunctioning. Jenna, the girl who was working as an informant for C-Sec at Chora's Den back in ME1, had been investigating the informant and used one of the tricks Detective Chellik showed her to sabotage his gun. Jenna tells Conrad that she couldn't believe he was brave enough to jump in front of a bullet for Shepard, and, winking at Shepard, Conrad says that me and him go way back, and offers to tell her all about it. The two depard, the beginning of a truly beautiful romance I'm sure, while Shepard rubs the bridge of his nose in exasperation.
Oh, did you know that Conrad Verner is actually Dr. Conrad Verner and that he wrote a dissertation on dark energy that serves as a war asset? He's also a friend of Davin Hossle (the guy who gave us the schematic fetch quest back on Feros) and was able to get some data from him. It was written in an ancient asari language, so it's a good thing I went out of my way to dig up all those ancient asari matriarchs' writings back in ME1. That's a grand total of five points toward the war effort. Glorious.
All of this would have been so, so satisfying if there were, you know, actual dialogue options, but it was an amusing interlude nonetheless.
But I was actually on serious business when I traveled to that section of the Citadel. C-Sec was investigating a terrorist who had sabotaged life support for a bunch of human patients at the hospital and then sabotaged a ship with over a hundred Alliance soldiers on it, causing it to crash. It turns out it's Balak, the batarian terrorist I let slip away during Bring Down the Sky--heartening to know that by saving a few hostages back in the day, I indirectly caused the deaths of a hundred human soldiers and god knows how many suffering human patients. But hey, I was able to Charm/Intimidate him into giving me the support of the remaining dregs of the batarian fleet (I was sorely tempted to take the option that just said [Kill him.]), so it's all good. Right? Right?! RIGHT?!
