It's a quick and easy way to emotionally tie Shepard to what is happening to Earth. For a moment there the kid looked safe but then the Reaper said "NOOOOO!" and killed him in the transport. They may have handled it a little hammy but it still got the point across rather quickly. People are dying, Shepard is upset at leaving Earth while they die, Shepard is determined to kick the crap out of the Reapers when she comes back.

Funny thing is a lot of people dont want him to die at the beginning.
At the end you want him to stay dead.
