Its not that the endings are bad...

We were given a series based on character development, yet given no resolution to the characters.
We were given a universe with rich lore and histories, only to have the end tear open major plot holes.
We were given a story where the base theme was moral dilemma, where no action was black and white and there are always shades of grey. But as it turns out, it is black and white. Organic=good, synthetic=bad.
We expected the crown jewel in the Mass Effect experience, something that we could wave saying "See, Bioware knows how to tell a story" but instead we got contrived endings that came out of nowhere and don't fit.
Its not that they were bad endings. Its that they werent Mass Effect.

Yeah thats about right. What confused me was the tone shifting so much. The whole game keeps saying everyones probably going to die and I was fine with that. But then on earth when you talk to your squad they pump you up by make it sound like living with a happy ending is a option.
Uhg, that is what breaks my heart the most. I told kaidan I would come back to him, but I couldn't. I told everyone I was coming back. Why even build this up for us if you are just going to make it impossible to see your crew ever again, even if you live?

Its that we were lied to. We were told that we had nearly countless endings influenced by everything we had done up to this point. We were told that the results would differ wildly, some would be happy some would be sad. In reality, we were given one ending with three slight variations. And nothing we had done to that point mattered.

The problem isn't even the endings really. It's that there is not "Good" ending. None of them are good. No matter which choice you make, you destroy galactic civilization, kill god only knows how many people, blow up multiple star systems, and then you die.
That's the problem. There is no "Good" ending.
If anything the three ending should be in a tier system with a 4th at the top.
Worst Performance: Destroy ending
Ok Performance: Control Ending
Good Ending: Synthesis
Best: Happy Ending.

But yes, they did take away choice. I felt like all my choices didn't matter and I was just following auto-dialogue Shepard's (AKA Mac Walters' Shepard) story.

In this case, the extra ding is a squad mate dying instead of waiting to die five minutes later.

It is a pity because I otherwise enjoyed the game.

I fought for galactic civilization for 3 games and it turns out in the end none of my decisions mattered in the grand scheme. It was doomed either way.
*when i say galactic civilization i mean not life itself, but the civilization that depends on the relays and knows nothing else.

Agreed if we actually got sixteen different endings like we were told I gurantee much of the ending hate would be eliminated. Instead we got one ending with three different light colors.

Shepard doesn't die in every ending. In my ending he was shown to still be alive after the signal was sent through and destroyed the mass relays. 4500EMS, chose destruction. Just thought I'd let you know.Avissel wrote...

Mass Effect, like just about every thoughtful game, or piece of entertainment, had a theme. The way I interpreted that theme was this "Hope, and hard work can prevail in the most desperate of situations." but in ten minutes it was crushed, it was twisted into "No matter what, you can't change destiny, even though you have an illusion of choice in life, you can't change it it in the end." That. That complete recon of the theme of a story that I loved, because for me, theme was very central in Mass Effect, was what killed the game, I wouldn't have cared if Shepard had died, if it was done sworn to the lore, as a choice for rushing through the game, or if it still conveyed the theme, but it.. it just did not compute.
