Whilst travelling the wilderness from Redcliffe to Denerim you find a journal which, although has been severely damaged, does not seem all that old...  All but the last entries are legible - stained with blood and gore.  The last few pages read as follows;

Day 39; "Today we set out from the Dalish Elves' camp to the Circle Mage Tower.  We have struggled here and there with our battles with mages and supernatural beings, but the new equipment we have purchased is serving us well.  Morrigan hit me over the head with her staff today, spurning my advances, and I barely felt it!  I'll try again tomorrow.  Truly though - quality merchandise."

Day 40;  "Our skills have improved; our confidence growing knowing that we have just triumphed over most powerful beings.  I now command ice and animate corpses to aid our battles.  With continued persistence the Archdemon will truely suffer our wrath!  Alastair has decided that he would like to see a little more of the wilderness.  I think we should stick with the main road, but sometimes it's as if I have no control over where we wander!  Better just do what he wants so he'll stop whining."

The journal's last page seems inked in haste and the writing noteably harder to read...

Day 41; "... I am dieing... my wounds severe and fatal... with my last breaths of life I leave these pearls of wisdom to those who find this journal... we were ambushed and beset by bandits; better trained and better equipped than we... why did I listen to Alastair?  Why didn't my party decide to stay the main road? Why would I follow?  None of that matters now though.  The bandits have taken what we were carrying - Alastair has been put on display as an example - the last of the Grey Wardens will soon be no more...

But I find solace in my last few moments while my blood stains my homeland Ferelden's soil.  These simple bandits, now equipped with our belongings, will surely smite all that confront them!  I know this because when the Archdemon walks through these trees, it will be mobbed by an Elite unit that is always 1 to 2 levels more powerful than its current level and accompanied by several supporting guards.

So go home says I.  Let the Darkspawn horde swarm the land - because the inhabitants can defend themselves whether you choose to risk your life... or not"

So instead of just saying:
"Damn yo... them bandits be takin it to my ass!"
He instead tries getting all Shakespearish and makes zero sense in the mean time? Brilliant...

lol :) A long winded way of saying scaling, not game difficulty, how every battle is scaled.  It just kills it for me when every random encounter has creatures that are about as powerful as I am.  It just makes me think, what's the point?  Ferelden's people can this on their own :)

I dunno I found it a tad funny, which I think was the point.....yay for senses of humor! Then again I'm a huge fan of terrible, cut-off-your-ears-it's-so-bad puns so my sense of humor may be off the norm.Image IPB

lol it was obvious what he was talking about by the last entry...don't be an ass just because you were too dumb to understand it.

actually, for a whine thread, it was pretty well written...

but I guess that too goes over your head

The rant made sense to me. I assume it refers to the random encounter where you spy on the critters before hand. If so, I can very well believe thats a stupidly strong 'Random' enounter to get that early. Later on in game, you may well be a level behind, but you're supposed to be a lot better equiped, and control your 'horde' far better than the AI.

Nah not mad.  Most encounters can be beaten - the story is fabulous and that's what keeps me going.  I did die before posting this topic but it wasn't out of anger or frustration, just a feeling of "why".

Where are the few encounters that I can just wail on some low level guys to make me feel all special about my new equipment and skills?  I'm sure there'll be a mod that will eventually tweak the game.  But, other than the awesome story, it feels "Oblivion-ish" if every encounter scales.

Take BGII for instance, a friend of mine and I wiped out a town once (playing an evil party) and we were pretty high level.  That was fun because I had invested time and effort into developing my character into something more powerful than a castle or town guard.  Scaled people, guards, rats etc. don't normally mass populate the entire province.  And if they do why would you be needed in the first place?

I suppose it's more of an immersion thing.

Well there's that encounter and others as well.  This one is actually a purely random bandit encounter with no plot significance.  But if these bandits can best me wearing leather and horned helmets vs. my plate and spells then I just find that funny!

I'm glad at least a few got it :) I know it's long winded and has a lot of buildup.  But really I don't want to start over from my last save right now and honestly I have nothing better to do with my time ;)

Of course there are people out there more powerful then you, bands of bandits included. When you get to the end of the game you'll learn you're special not necesarily because you're the baddest badass on the face of Ferelden, but because of something else. In any case, those bandits won't take on the Archdemon because there's no profit in it. Bandits not being known for altruistic motives and all that.

Oh I expect there's something else plot driven eventually.  But since you've conquered the game and I am several hundred hours away from that, is each random encounter scaled all the time?  If so that's my point really.  Like I said previously it's immersion breaking to me, not game breaking.

Edit:  Oh and if EVERY encounter is scaled in the long run then that would give me the impression that every time I kill a bandit I level the whole province, if not the world,  up a little.  Hmm... maybe that's part of the plot though... OOH DON'T TELL ME THOUGH!!!

And I think that my Elite bandit troupe would still mob the Archdemon and win - but it'll be a trap - and they'll use my corpse as a 2 handed weapon...

2nd Edit: Doesn't matter though the Bandits would just level themselves up when they got to the Archdemon.  Bandits do that you know ;)  Actually the Archdemon would level up too... so your main character still loses in between two level infinity mobs.

Altruism is not necessary.  Just a touch of foresight - if the Archdemon wins, there'll be nothing but darkspawn to prey on.

Very true.  They would not be alive to profit, so why would they not fight?

generally speaking, real heroes such as Roland or Charlemagne certainly weren't the best warriors of their own nation, let alone an entire continent full of hostile critters. i don't know when the idea of Protaganist Must Be Ubergod was introduced, but it's a fallacy to equate being very influential in world affairs with martial supremacy.

also, why bother with encounters where you just wipe them out in 30 seconds. just pretend there are more fights that would only bore you or feel like a grind.

Remember that levels aren't an in-character thing. Scaling makes things more reasonable in a way because is it really logical for one person to be so vastly more powerful than another that there is no chance of the latter person defeating them? Even the most inept fool has a chance of killing the most skilled and practiced fighter in the world.

The scaling is also really well done in that areas have a level range, so they scale up to a certain point, and that once you go into an area, that area's level is set for the playthrough, so if you fled a fight you couldn't win and then came back later, you'd be stronger. Random encounters scale with you, but in a way that makes a reasonable amount of sense either. As the country becomes more dangerous, only the stronger bands of bandits are able to continue operating, for example.

I like the idea that you're not all that uber strong and awesome, and that you're special because of who you are, and your role is to unite the land against the Blight. In a way I wish that were reinforced even more, because you still seem to walk in and solve most situations that those who should be stronger than you can't. In some ways, gathering allies doesn't even entirely make sense, because in the course of doing so, you prove your party of four stronger than their entire force. This particularly applies in the Circle tower and the Brecilian forest, where you basically handle a combat situation FOR the people you're trying to get assistance from. The Redcliffe situation makes more sense because there, the support you're trying to get is less combat-related, as well as the primary force of combatants not being there at the time, so the people who would better be able to handle the situation aren't available. Orzammar similarly makes sense, since everyone is too busy bickering to actually get anything done, so it falls to you.
