Guys, it's possible to criticize the ending without trashing Mac. He didn't create this in a vacuum. Others read and agreed or approved this ending. No doubt, many suggestions were used to create it. Casey even said they wanted the end to spark controversy. It was a miscalculation on bioware's part, not just one writer. The rest of the game is amazing, so obviously he's not a horrible writer.

Does one monumentally bad decision get ignored in the face of other smaller good ones? Also yes, much more of the staff is to blame than just him, but if he was the one who planted the seed then I can understand the directed anger.

This ending (involving the Citadel and mass relays) was essentially the ending from the beginning according to Drew. They just fudged the execution.

I'm pretty sure EA and its marketing team had more to do with the crap ending than this guy did.

So this is the genius behind Shepard's indoctrination ending. I applaud him for giving us the best ending in video game history. But I also hope Bioware has something more up in their sleeve. We still need the satisfactory closure.

My belief was that this was pretty much case from the beginning.

My theory here explains why the rest of the game is decent to amazing writing while the end sucked.

The rest of the game was written by a team of writers who really, really cared about the game and the fanbase. They tried their damndest to put out the best game possible and succeeded for the most part. The gfx people, the writers, and the VAs all did great.

Then Mac Walters comes in during a bad acid trip and says "lol space magic."

That is honestly how I see it unfolding by the way.

Maybe or maybe not. There is nothing good in this ending. Nothing.
I can understand Bioware needs to make a ending with plothole for their next game but the whole idea of a God Kid or the "we must kill you for protect you" was terrible. When you already have a good plot with the dark energy since the beginning you dont change things like that just because you run out of time.

I'm inclined to agree, as well as the general lack of polish that's present in the game.

The problem being that they'd set themselves an impossible task within the time frame.  If they had stuck to their guns they'd have produced another disc's worth of content just for the ending, where by it combined a better version  of the current ending withj a multitude of different sub endings expanding upon the immediate future of a galaxy post Shepherd.

But after all is said and done, the writing could have been handled a lot better than it was.

Mac Walters was the lead writer. Much of the writing in this game was phenomenal. Only the ending has generated so much discontent. Drew K was a good writer, but many things have been at least as good since he moved on to other things. The biggest criticism I have is that this ending was not properly built up or put in context. Thematically, this game was moving in a totally different direction until the end. Perhaps the hints were incorporated into the third game, but the themes were not. Without those themes, the hints lack proper context, and therefore lack impact.

I think they wanted to do something different. Thing is, when you write a story to Joseph Campbell's notes, you can't just change the ending to make it different.

That final choice in the ending gelt more like a cheap 80's game show... They should've stopped with destroying the most advanced civilization which is beautiful in its simplicity rather than add that recylced matrix concept of synthetics going against organics... The child is annoying... The old man & child also so-so... It all just felt extremely cheap... I've never seen such bad writing.

I remember seeing somewhere about how the Stargazer's background image was actually a modified stock photo, as was Tali's face.

Was cutting corners really necessary even at the end?

They claim that but it is not actually true. At least in the example of the end space scene image. Someone thought was smart when found a similar one of which there are millions of snow covered landscapes with large moon(s) in background. Fantasy artists do those kind all the time. The one they claim was edited is not edited, it is not the same at all.

The stock photo used for Tali being edited is true though.

ITW : You’ve established that this is the end of Shepard’s story. How difficult is it crafting an ending to a big saga like this?

Mac Walters : The trick is, because it’s a BioWare game, there will be more than one
ending. Which means there’s more than one ending to Shepard’s story.
It’s not a matter of saying, “Here’s an optimal ending.” There’s gonna
be different options, different endings.

Walters: [...] We’re the

You don't say o_O ?

More seriously, this sentence sums it all : self-centered creation. If creation is not designed with the desire to please the crowd it is sold to, it will always fail.

If there's one thing and one thing only that Mac should learn from this it's that when your script includes a "star child" you need to rewrite it till it no longer does.

Mac Walters may have written the ending, but Casey Hudson is the one who decided what made it into the game.
