If the Reapers were sent by a force from another galaxy entirely, that would have been satisfying.  Would make the games make us realize just how substantial space is.  The Reapers job would be to keep our galaxy in check and not let us get too powerful while they got ready to take over.  It's a massive, galaxy taking force that created them, that is also far more advanced than us.  So they send reapers every once in a while to clear out the galaxies of their intelligent life forms.  They don't want to wipe out all life because they want the planets to be habitable for when they finally do arrive.

Reapers give us Mass Effect relays so we don't become evolved to the point where we'd discover them on our own.  That would relate to the issue of giving Krogan tech they couldn't handle as well, or not keeping the Collector Base for that reason.  They built the Citadel to cut off leadership of life, but the events of Mass Effect 1 already dealt with that threat.

The Crucible design could have been sent from even another galaxy, which is at war with the one sending the reapers, and we're the first cycle able to actually build it, catching the reapers by surprise.

That way, everything would at least exist.  That way, we don't rely on some spirit of ambiguous nature that takes the form of a child and is seemingly all-knowing.  Or deal with the possibility that the whole thing is made up by a wacky grandpa talking to his grandson in the early 1900s.

When we find that out, then Shep can either live or die, or earth could be destroyed or not, it doesn't really matter.  Those parts should be dictated by choices throughout the series.  The above should just be the final explanation.  Instead, we receive....something else.

I doubt it's a made up story. Generally grandparents in the 1900's didn't tell their sons about sexual encounters and mass genocide. Also, there's not a giant moon anywhere near Earth.
