Mass Effect is a Franchise that has
been around since November 20, 2007. As you all know that the “Final”
installment has came out and most people hate the ending. I was
hoping to go through the 3games and list some Pros and Cons that I
have found with each game. I am writing this from the prespective of
a person that has played through the previous games at least four
times as Infiltrators. Two characters on Normal a male Paragon(Good),
and a Female Renegade(Mostly Evil she always was nice to the
Quarians). Two New Game Plus on Hardcore with the previous Characters.
ME1
Pros for ME1:
Epic Storyline with great character
development.
Fairly good cover-based combat system
The feelings that your choices
ultimately affected the end: Who you let live and die IE: Kaiden or
Ashley, Wrex, and a few more.
Endings that have 3 choices that lead
to 6 different endings. First choice is the Destiny Ascension whether
to save it or not. Second choice is which Ambassador to choose. Third
choice happens only after the Destiny Ascension is destroyed and that
is what type of new council will be put in place.
Medigel: The proper use of Medigel
could keep you alive when you should not be able to survive what is
happening to you with out it.
Customization of weapons and armor: You
could adjust your gear to suit your playstyle.
Cons for ME1:
Mako: Thing drove horribly Cortez was
right when he suggested the thing “Drove like a Drunken Rhino.”
Also, Ben “Yahtzee” Croshaw in stated that the Mako handled like
a “Fatman on a unicycle.” in the ME2 review Yahtzee stated,
“While I definitely don't miss the bouncy house shopping trolley
car physics...”
Way too long involved exploration: It
took way too long to clear out a planet and way too many planets,
asteroids and other celestial masses to explore. That in the end
didn't really count for much.
Menu System: Ben “Yahtzee” Croshaw
was right “The Menu system is not what you call intuitive and the
game brings over almost everything from the Knights of the Old
Republic for better or worse including the tedious micromanaging of
equipment like some fussy mother getting her children ready for the
first day of school...”
Inventory: You picked up way too much
stuff in the game, an disproportional amount of time is spent in
between each level sorting trough the stuff you picked up and either
equipping or or just selling it.
Overly complicated talent system: There
were just way too many choices to choose and you were “Forced” to
take. IE: Not bringing a team member with sufficient enough in the
Decryption or Electronics skills along forces you to miss out on a
lot of the all too abundant loot.
Electronics and Decryption: The
bypassing/hacking system was horrible and based more on luck than
skill. It got to a point that I did not initiate a quick save before
each attempt so that if I failed that I could just reload the save
and try again hoping the blocks were in a better position.
Horrible Squad Member programing:
Yahtzee stated, “During combat your companions get in your way
constantly. Possibly because they want to be ready incase you order
them to give you a reassuring cuddle..”
Medigel: The fact it was the only
useful way to heal your party up after a fire fight or keep them
alive.
Customization of weapons and armor: Too
many “useless” mods that just became credit fodder when sold.
ME2
Pros of ME2:
Epic Story: The epicness starts with
the Normandy being destroyed and ends with either you keeping or
destroying the Collector base.
Update graphics: The updated graphics
of ME2 was nice and also the option of the “Film grain” made
it feel like you were in a movie.
Simplified Talent system: I admit that
I was disappointed by the simplified talent system but it was like a
Fungus (It grew on me.). The simplified system made leveling a
no-brainer but it soon became cookie cutter. Basically it what
talents you used were dependent on the game difficulty level. On
Norma or below Area Of Effect “Reave” became ridiculously
overpowered being able to not only take out an entire group of
unshielded/unarmored enemies with one cast but also rendering them
unable to do anything while they are bending over in pain. On higher
difficulties Hardcore and higher AoE Energy drain became an asset by
knocking off the shields that almost enemy has and allowing a sniper
head-shot to take them out.
Choices actually have meaningful
consequences: In the final mission your choices have a direct
influence on the ending. The choices on whether to or not upgrade
Armor, Shield, and Weapons systems on the Normandy SR-2 can
potentially save or kill up to three crew member in the approach of
the Collector base. How many missions completed after the abduction
of the crew determines on how many can be saved. On the Suicide
mission your choices directly effect who lives and who dies. You put
the right person in the right position and all is well, if you don't
they will die. This is evident in the Vents, if you send some one
back with the crew, Fire-team leader, Biotic specialist for the
barrier, and finally who you bring up with you to the final battle.
If this was not enough, the Crew members that are not loyal to
Shepard will most likely die in holding the line. The amount of squad
members alive when the proto-reaper dies effects on whether Shepard
survives or not. Finally the loyalty level of your crew determines
how many of them survive the final defense/push to get into ME3.
Whether you destroy or keep the proto-reaper feels like it has a
definite effect on the future.
Regen of health and Shields: I love in
ME2 that if you get hurt and hide for a bit you can get your health
and shields back up. More than once I have gotten stupid and left
cover and had my butt almost shot off only to be saved by cloaking
and running to the nearest cover and regenerating my life back.
DLC: ME2 had some very fun DLC.
Operation Overlord was an epic look into how good intentions could
have horrible consequences. In the Arrival reinforces the threat of
the Reaper invasion by letting you know that it could only be days
away and how you respond after it determines on what type of
treatment Shepard gets after the event. Also the Arrival was epic
because you actually delayed the Reapers months by destroying the
Alpha-relay and forcing them to go to the next closest one. Delaying
the Reapers months or years, but looking at the Galaxy map the closes
“known' relay is the Local Cluster IE Sol system that earth is in.
Cons of ME2:
Over-simplified inventory: The
inventory system was way to simplistic. Very few weapon and armor
choices.
Ugrades: The ability to only upgrade
the items in a linear manner was disappointing you were not able to
adjust your gear to your playing style as much as in ME1. Your armor
pieces selection was lack luster. Upgrades cost too much or too many
upgrades shared a particular building material. IE Platinum was used
for almost everything and EEZO was not used for much.
Exploration: Having badmouthed ME1 for
its exploration I like it better than ME2. At least in ME1 you are
actively exploring the planet from its surface. As stated by Yahtzee
“The free roaming planets did give the game universe a tangible
bigness. While most of ME2 feels like switching from a bunch of
enclosed shooting galleries. Before returning to your ship to play
with your train set. Off-roading on random planets is now replaced by
scanning the surface from orbit, launching probes to extract
resources. Which is as interesting as it sounds and it sounds and it
sounds like this “Bwaaaaaaaaaaaa....”
Squad members AI: It was just as bad in
ME2 as it is in ME1. More times than I can count have my Squad mates
leave cover and get brought down quickly by withering enemy fire. It
soon got the to point on my Hardcore playthroughs that I started to
not even use Medigel to revive them and took on the enemies by
myself.
Weapons Choices: Being shoe horned into
a particular weapon set and not being able to chose the weapon types
was a downer.
ME3 (First play through):
Pros of ME3:
Depth of the universe: You truly become
engrossed in the conflict. You watch countless people die from Reaper
invasions. You feel like you are taking part of a great endeavor
against a hopeless cause. You get more of a feeling about the races.
How each race has its flaws and depth, with them bickering about what
to do, how to do it and what is the best course of action.
Improved inventory system: The ability
to chose any weapon in the game and take it with you was an awesome
addition. The choices were endless, you could be a Sniper rifle
wielding Adept, or a shotgun wielding infiltrator that specializes in
close range and stealth. The combinations were numerous and
satisfying. The additional gear selection choices was a nice touch
too.
Upgrades: The upgrading of the weapons
in ME3 was awesome by letting the player decide on how they wanted to
use their weapons. Not like in ME2 where you get differing flavors of
make gun do more damage and carry more ammo. Every upgrade costs
credits and nothing else.
Updated Simplified Talent system: The
new talent system is epic. I love the ability to chose talents that
were more to my playing style. Though in the end it pretty much
became cookie cutter when you realize how you want to play the game.
Simplified exploration system: The
ability to ping the system for item while worrying about the Reaper
awareness looking for hidden treasure, and orbiting the planet to
have to send only one probe to get the treasure was decent. This new
system is far better than ME2 and Me1 combined.
Better Squad AI: The AI in Me3 is very
good, very few times have I caught my squad mates doing something
stupid but, there are a few times that they would just stand next to
a grenade that was dropped besides them while they are in cover, but
I digress at least they died in cover and not rushing headlong into a
squad of enemies only to die quickly.
Choices that 'Feel' like they matter:
In ME3 you have choices that feel like they mean something. For
example whether to cure or not the Genophage, whether or not destroy
the Geth when you have a chance to and many more smaller choices.
Understanding of the races: You got to
understand the races of the Galaxy more. Understanding why the Geth
and the Quarians got in the war.
Cons of ME3:
Many Plot holes: My understanding of
the Reaper invasion that they some how magically found a relay that
shot them past some of Earths defenses allowing them to attack Earth.
In the Arrival the destruction of the Alpha-relay was supposed to
delay the Reapers by forcing them to find another relay, the closest
relay on the ME2 map was the one in the Local Cluster IE Earth's
system. How the hell did the Reapers take control of the Citadel,
kill every one on it, and magically transport it to be in
geosynchronous orbit above London.
Ending: The ending was just horrible,
the alien fleets are just stranded in the Earth System away from the
home planets that they just liberated. The least affected fleet would
be the Quarians since they are nomadic and had been doing the roaming
thing for 300 years but there are some Quarians stuck on Rannoch, and
I hope that the Quarians brought some of the Civilian fleets to the
battle so that they would have food and medical supplies for the way
home.
Conclusion: The Mass Effect games have
been great over all, but I am still soured by horrible ending of ME3,
but I hope that the DLC that they will come up with is worth it,
possibly add a DLC that adds a series of missions to find something
that when added to the Crucible and activated will have the same
ending as the original but not destroy the relays, Shepard and give
more closure to the ending like they did with Fallout:3, New Vegas
where it tells you what happens to the people that you interact with.
Please don't let this thread become a
flame war on Bioware and EA, but let this thread be about what you
liked and disliked about the games and the franchise.
